UTA Fall 2015 NP acceptance
No I was not able to register. I thought I had it worked out, but did not. My advisor is on vacation but she assured me it would be her priority when she gets back. AND... I just got an email from someone saying one of the classes I am having evaluated for transfer is not on my transcript... which is impossible because I am sitting here looking at it. So..... I don't know. I am sooooo glad you got everything taken care of and got to register!!! Here's hoping a miracle will happen and I will get registered and be able to get books before the first day of class!

UTA Fall 2015 NP acceptance
I emailed my director when I was trying to find out the process for having my courses evaluated. She responded quickly and did not seem bothered at all. I would absolutely email your director and politely ask for guidance on how to proceed with the process and registration. We are, after all, paying for this education and being able to register is a pretty important part of the process!! You have every right to advocate for yourself!

UTA Fall 2015 NP acceptance
I just wanted to add that the advisor has been very helpful and responsive in trying to work with me on this situation. She has been very prompt in answering my emails. I know it isn't her fault that the process is so slow. I don't want to discourage anyone from applying to this school as I believe the program is a good one. However, I do think the idea that you can't get an answer to your transfer courses until after registration is ridiculous. Especially if one of the classes is a pre-requisite to all other classes. I think the process has been even further delayed because it is the summer and not everyone involved in the process is readily accessible. At any rate, I have figured out a schedule that will work for me without knowing the outcome of the transfer classes. If you are applying and have transfer classes.....communicate early on with the school and see if you can get the process started ASAP!

UTA Fall 2015 NP acceptance
Yes. I am in the same situation. Except I only submitted my classes for review 3 weeks ago because I was told you could not submit them until you were accepted into the program. The math they gave me indicates I won't know if my classes have been accepted until after the semester has already started! That makes no sense to me. I have emailed the advisor again and asked what my options are. She mentioned something at orientation about pushing back starting the program for another semester. But I am not willing to do that. AND... I am not willing to just sit here and wait until the day before school starts to see if they accepted my classes. I would like to get registered so I can plan my life....not sure what to do either.

UTA Fall 2015 NP acceptance
Did they tell you today at orientation that it would take 2-3 months to evaluate transfer courses for credit? The handout said 2-3 weeks, but the advisor that I spoke with said realistically, it is 2-3 months. I was just wondering what you were told.

UTA Fall 2015 NP acceptance
I am having some classes evaluated for transfer and in some correspondence regarding the process for this the Director of my program said "You will be coming to campus for orientation and we will work on a degree plan for you that we will share with you on that day". I think we will receive our anticipated schedule on the 22nd.

UTA Fall 2015 NP acceptance
I am still not able to set up my email either. I talked to the IT on Friday and he said it is usually 48 hours after acceptance before you can get into the system and set it up. But it was a Friday afternoon, so it may take a little longer since it was the weekend.

UTA Fall 2015 NP acceptance
Congratulations!! The fall class document they sent is confusing. I wonder if we will hear from an advisor to tell us which classes we need to take. Or maybe they will tell us at the mandatory orientation. I live 1.5 hours away as well. I haven't even seen the degree plan. Is it on their website?

Can you have a life AND do HH?
Well.... I have answered my own question and the answer is ....... NO!! It is 11:00 AM Sunday morning and I have been documenting since 9AM and probably have about 2 more hours to go. But I am happy to say that in two more days, I will be done with HH documentation FOREVER! Lesson learned. I have a whole new respect for HH nurses and applaud your never ending dedication to the job. It is such a valuable service to patients and families. You guys rock!

Can you have a life AND do HH?
Thanks for all the input. I am still working at the same HH agency, but definitely looking to get out. I have had a talk with my clinical director and branch manager and was basically told "this is the way of home health". All of the RNs have to document during off hours in order to keep up. I just don't accept that I am expected to work 12 hours a day and get paid for 8. Nor do I accept that I am expected to work on weekends for free. I agree that nurses need to stop overdoing. We just accept the massive responsibility and work load that is dumped onto us. So.... I am going to move on. I really love the patients, but I need my life back.

Can you have a life AND do HH?
I am a previous hospital nurse who has been doing home health for about 2 months. So far it has been a nightmare! I am charting every night after I finish seeing patients and most of the weekend. We do computer charting which I am thankful for... but even so, it takes so much time! I am salary and it is a decent salary... unless you are working 12 hours Monday through Friday and all weekend. I have gotten faster since I started, but I just don't see how it is possible to see patients and get charting completed in a 40 hour week. As an RN I am primarily doing admissions, recerts, and ROCs all of which take some time at the patients home AND even more time charting. I am computer savvy and I type fast...so I don't know. They are always pushing you to stay caught up with your documentation and the only way I can do this is to document ALL THE TIME. Is this just the nature of home health? I love the patients and I love the teaching aspect of the job. But I hate the endless hours. I also dislike the constantly changing schedule. I will think I have my day planned and then I will get a call that a someone has been added to my schedule. Is this the way HH is...... or it is just me... or the agency? Any thoughts are appreciated.

NP program that provides clinicals/preceptors
I have the same question. I am interested in any school in any state that sets up clinicals/preceptors. I do not want the headache of trying to set up my own. I have been accepted into a program near my home. However, they do not set up clinicals and I am hearing from others in the program that it is a nightmare. Thanks for any input.

Staying Motivated
I'm in the same situation right now. I am taking theory and statistics.. I absolutely HATE the theory class and every second I spend working on the ridiculous projects assigned is a massive struggle. I am also working full time and I am just really tired of studying on my days off. Like you, I am hoping that next semester will be better. I think once we get into classes that are interesting and more directly apply to practice....... we will become motivated once again. I am really hopeful that it is just the class this semester that has me so unmotivated. So.... I don't really have any advice..... but I feel your pain. Hang in there....it has to get better.

HELP! PMHNP vs. LCSW
I was a licensed social worker for 13 years before going back to school in 09 to get my BSN. I am now in a FNP program. I would never get my masters in social work because the pay is so low. There is absolutly no return on that investment. I don't know what area you are from, but in my part of Texas the PMHNPs are definitely involved in the therapeutic intervetions. In our mental health hospitals, the PMHNP leads the group therapy sessions. You are right in that it is very frustrating working with clients when you are not hte prescriber. There are many times when you will not agree with the medication regimen of a client for one reason or another. The market for LCSWs is pretty much non-existant here and the pay is horrible. My advice......PMHNP.

IM Injections
Situation: IM Phenergan injection in the deltoid of obese patient resulting in an immediate, small localized knot at injection site. I don't know the specifics of the needle size and method used. Question: What causes this? Is it just something that just happens sometimes or is it an operator error? I was thinking maybe it ended up being SQ because the pt was obese and the needle was too short. Or maybe it was pushed too quickly? Any input is greatly appreciated. I am a relatively new nurse. I had a patient ask me about this and besides not having an answer........ I of course became paranoid that I may do the same thing.

How do you apply for a Florida nursing license?
You don't need to pay anyone to do this. Just go to the Florida Board of Nurisng website and follow the instructions. The information for the medication error ceu's is on the website as well as how to get the finger prints. You will most likely have to go to your local police department to do the fingerprints. You can order the cards for fingerprinting from the Fl BON website.

Bullying--The Other "B" Word
Witchy, bully, rude, hateful, catty....whatever...it is all unacceptable and I should not have to spend my time trying to figure out which one you are projecting. It is completely unnecessary even in the most tense situations. I have NEVER felt the need to be any of these things to my co-workers....even in the worst of situations. I should not have to learn how to deal with it, learn to protect myself, develop a thicker skin, study the dictionary to determine my most appropriate response or analyze your childhood in an effort to determine your motivations. YOU should learn how to act like a human being who has chosen a difficult and stressful career that requires many women working together as a team in order to deliver the best care possible to the patient. I work with a great group of nurses that respect and help each other no matter what the circumstances. However, I have encountered the witch/bully/catty/hateful person in the past. She ran off many a new nurse and is still there tending the revolving door with the manager scratching her head wondering why she can't keep nurses.

Masters Entry Programs - Is a BSN necessary to practice as an NP in some states?
I am a UPenn NP student. Yesterday we had a panel of nurse recruiters come to the school to talk to us about what they look for when hiring. There were 5 recruiters and all said that they will NOT hire a NP without nursing experience. However, they said nothing about the BSN. I don't think the BSN is a factor but at least in Philadlephia nursing experience is a factor.

Job outlook for new grad NPs without nursing experience
I am a NP student at UPenn. Yesterday we had a panel of recruiters from local hospitals come and speak about how they screen candidates and what they are looking for. There were 5 recruiters there and each one said that they would NOT consider hiring a NP without nursing experience. They said that the physicians have alot of input in who they hire and they are not about to consider a NP without nursing experience. The recruiter from the pediatric hospital said she is not impressed at all by where you did you clinicals because everyone does clinicals. If you do not have nursing experience, then your application is tossed. They were much more concerned with nursing experience than with NP experience. Horrifying news for the direct entry folks. Having said that, I think it depends on where you are in the country as to how true that is. I can understand in Philly where there are so many good schools and they have a large applicant pool. However, in rural areas and other parts of the country there may be a smaller applicant pool and/or more jobs. They may be more willing to hire someone without nursing experience. I only have two years of nursing experience and I am hoping that is enough. I am from rural Texas and will be returning there to work. I am very optimistic that I will find work. The educators really need to tell students that it may be more difficult to find a job without nursing experience. Not because you can't do the job(that is a different forum) but because recruiters may not even give you a chance without that nursing experience.

Hiring outlook for ADN vs. BSN in your town?
I recently graduated with a BSN in Texas and have never had a problem finding a job. I worked at Baylor in Dallas right out of school. On my unit... they hired ADNs ONLY if they had experience. They hired BSNs only (new grads included) for their internship programs. I have since moved back to my rural Texas area and have had no problem finding a job. I think you will have an edge with a BSN if the experience between two candidates is equal. I think it may be easier as a new grad to get a job with a BSN. That is just my opinion. I do think that employers pay attention to the education, especially in this economy. But..... as others have stated there is more than one way to get that BSN. If you are planning on staying in Texas I am sure you will be able to find a job without too much difficulty.

Worst Interview Ever!!
Don't let the opinion of ONE person discourage you. She cannot not possibly speak for the entire nursing community in your area. Nor can she know the attitudes of all of those responsible for hiring. I think the work you did toward getting back into nursing shows your commitment. Someone will recognize that and put you to work! I don't know where you are from, but here in Texas you would definitely be marketable.
