Tube Systems - Research Survey
1. Yes- utilize a tube system 2. Minimal concerns when it is down for maintenance or issues, I have the benefit of being close to the staff that maintains the tube system. I know more of the tube systems ins & outs. I know tubes are tracked in real time. I know there is a log of what station & time stamp of a tube leaving & reaching a destination. I also understand WHY the tube station goes down. Many times staff error; tubes not latched properly either by mistake or being over filled & can't properly latch. 3. 5- very often 4. 3. - if tube system is down it takes precious time to run labels or medications. Procedures need to stay on track, staff carries the addition burden. We group as many as we can to minimize disruption

How do you feel about being asked to shadow in addition to interview?
4 hours does seem like a big commitment on paper, but if it's a fast paced environment, 4 hours goes quickly, and staff will be more organic. If it's a position I really want I would be on board. 1 hour gives very minimal insight. You are assessing them as much as they are you. Give yourself the best opportunity to see if the work and atmosphere fits you. Good luck.

How should I handle CNA
Wow! You're not even off the ground running and you're getting push back. From his reaction, it sounds like he feels he has a history of being taken advantage of in his mind, but maybe he has? The request made wasn't out of line, and patient care should always come first. I'd have explained the need for the help, "patient will be arriving soon & I need to complete my charting, if someone could help me?.” For myself, personally, if I could spare the time to transport the patient I'd just do that & complete my charting when I'm able. I would definitely keep a written log of poor behavior, if it's not an isolated incident. Most importantly, I would pull the colleague aside in private and have a conversation of what each of you expects of the other as colleagues. Also, I would add, "going forward, if you have a concern with me, please give me the respect to speak to me in private, just as I'm doing with you right now.”

Boosting patients safely
How does everyone boost immobile significantly obese patients in bed without hurting themselves? 3 staff used a draw sheet but was barely able to move the patient. I want the patient and staff to be safe.

Same day Joint Replacement Surgery
Almost in total joints go home same day from our hospital. Revisions may spend a night or two. The ones that stay are either very frail, or severe pain issues (which is rare).

Shoe recommendation?
I’ve had success with HOKA bondi. Extra cushioning & stabilization. Even after a year of wearing they remain well cushioned. Per my podiatrist & a shoe sales staff member it’s good practice to trade off between two pair of shoes every other day. I’ve tried many other shoes brands and while comfortable for a short time they quickly lost that benefit. My HOKAs are still going strong in the comfort department.

WANTED: Nursing student tidbits of advice
I actually think that is a good way to approach the class any way. always read the material BEFORE going into class whether you have to or not, that way it will be familiar and you can clarify muddy spots. I agree with the caffeine, fast meals, and lack of sleep....but we are strong, and we will do what we have to! I also, am like you, in that C's would make me seriously sad. If I am going to torture my body with lack of sleep and chemicals, I better get a great grade out of it! First major test is Wed. Wish me luck! And best of luck to you as your adventure continues.

WANTED: Nursing student tidbits of advice
A good pen! Just review your notes each day, dont wait until the night before a test to cram. Understand the process, dont memorize the material. And for skills, practice, practice, practice. Everyone is anxious for the unknown...it will be ok. I promise.

All white uniforms? Eek...help!!
It could be worse! There is a nursing class in our area that have to wear mechanic type jump suits with big collars....sexy......LOL. I would take the white scrubs ANY DAY over the other option.

Are you a competitive Nursing Student?
I, personally, hold myself to an A status. I work hard to achieve that goal, with many people being pushed to the wayside. While proud of my GPA, I am not proud of my lack of balance between school and everything else. As for the rest of my class it was across the board, from C's to A's. The school that I go to have significantly increased their bar as to what is acceptable to move forward. Don't be a Jill....do your best, but with balance in all areas of your life.
