Phasing out LPN's? My answer consists of 2 words: Not possible. Rationale: 75 million baby boomers and RN's cannot take care of all those aging patients alone. Many people/nurses have been saying it ever since 1999.

After she clocked in and she found out the assignment was considered to be "uncomfortable..." She should have found out before that. Check the BON's guidelines when in doubt. In New York, I don't think the NYS-BON will allow the nurses to do it. That is abandonment. I don't know about your state. Different BON's have different policies/guidelines regarding to that situation. Why do you think she was terminated? How could she find out the assignment was "unsafe?" She must have done more than "clocking in..."

You just hope the DON is not going to report it to the FL-BON. The way to approach this problem is to take the assignment first even it is unsafe, then you proceed to discuss your concern with the supervisor or DON. If they have no intention to listen to you, then it is time to pack your bag and go somewhere else. Anyhow, I hope you will be OK!

If you could get into an RN Program, you should go for it. However, if that is not the case, you can use the LPN Program as a stepping stone. The very first time when I heard some nurses said that LPN's would be phased out was in 1998 and that was 11 years ago. With at least 75 million baby boomers, I don't think it is easy for anyone to get rid of LPN's. I myself was an LPN. Regarding to the pay, it depends on the location. In big cities, you get "big" pay. In small towns USA, you will get small town pay. In NYC, $25 to 29/hr in a nursing home if you work for an agency. I know in some parts of Florida, an RN is only getting $22 to 23/hr to start. It is your decision, once you become an LPN, it is easier for you to get into an RN Program and you can also work while you try to finish your RN Program. Good luck.

I am not so sure if your bosses were really "understand." I think all the bosses are diplomatic and smooth talking is part of it. Have you noticed that some nurses are doing the same thing? In front of you, they will say XYZ is no good and in front of XYZ, they will say some nasty things about you. From you posts, I am not really so sure if your bosses are totally on your side. Just perhaps.. At the end, I am not saying that you are a bad nurse. You do stand up and speak up for your patient. But I think there is a better way to solve this problem. There is not need to lose your coolness.

You must also read the OP statement--the very first post in this thread. You will come up with a bigger picture because I was responding to the OP. In this case, there is no need for an incident report!

The administrator was correct as there is no evidence at all. A nurse's "intuition" is just not good enough in this case.

You must quote my post entirely! I said an incident report is not needed and I stand by my decision;however, it seems to me you intentionally left out the big part of it. how do you know the wife is controlled by that man? are you closely related to them? is op's intuition a standard for all of us? it is just not right to judge a person when we are not even there. if the op was a judge, many innocents might have to go to jail based on her intuition. so sad.

I wasn't there so I don't think it is appropriate for me to judge what that man did. Different cultures have different ways to approach women. When you work in one of the Arab countries, you can't even have any eye contact with your female co-workers. Anyhow, many of you, without even being there physically, already decided that man was an evil doer. I remember from time to time when I watch the 20/20 or 60 Minutes, I see some people go to jail for no reason at all. No physical evidence. Just only she/he says, the innocents could end up in jail. So sad.

Both of them are the same! The second one I had to spend more time to define the first one! What do you mean by "your prior statement...erroneous?" An incident report is not needed in this case due to the fact that there is no harm to the resident in this case! Reporting to the supervisor regarding to this "incident" is not the same as filling out an incident report! Did you read the bottom part of my 1st post right here?
