Ohio requirements for School Nurse
Does anyone know if Ohio requires a BSN to become a school nurse? Can you work in a school with just an associate degree?

Safety and protection while working....
You say you can't carry a concealed weapon. Why? Who's going to know? If I were in those kinds of neighborhoods, I would either refuse to go, be packing heat, or find another job. I would not risk my life.

LPN vs RN, anyone pursue a Bachelors in non related field and change their mind
I was an LPN for 6 years before going back to get my RN. After graduating, I was humiliated by being offered LESS money than I was making as a LPN. My years of LPN experience "didn't count", so I had to start off as pretty much a "new nurse." If you really want the RN then I would wait. If you are satisfied being a LPN, then I would go for it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being an LPN, Actually, I wish I would have stayed one because I would be making more money now!

I am burning out..
I have been a nurse several years, and I am burned out too. I am currently searching for a new career in order to keep my sanity. I have changed jobs frequently, thinking it would be better elsewhere. I have finally come to realize that it is the nursing profession, itself, that is just filled with backstabbers, know it alls, complainers, and no matter how hard you work, or the fact that you don't even get a bathroom break, no one is ever happy. Nursing is not a glorious profession like some think it is. We are overworked, underpaid, and overstressed!

Phasing out LPN's?
As a previous LPN, and current RN that works in LTC and Hospital, I think that LPN's are great at the LTC facility that I work at. Most really know their stuff and are great nurses. On the other hand, when I work the hospital, I am actually caring for my 4-6 patients as well as the LPN's 4-6 patients. Totals me with 12 patients sometimes. LPN's are not permitted to call doctors, receive orders, do admissions, they refuse to start iv's (most won't even attempt it) I have to cosign their assessments and call doctors for change in condition. This leads to controversy because sometimes I don't feel a need to call a doctor about something so minimal at 3am. Then, they start bad mouthing me because I won't call. I think if a hospital is going to hire a nurse then let them be a nurse. I have no problem with LPN's, because I was one myself, but they are using them as a cover up in the hospital to where I work, so it looks like I only have 6 patients when i have 12!

Do I really hate nursing?????
I feel exactly the same way. I got my RN degree thinking things would change. Nothing changed, and I only make a couple dollars more, with more responsibilities. I should have stayed an LPN and they could have kept those couple dollars! I have worked LTC, Hospital, Home Health. I thought going to the hospital was going to be better because you don't have as many patients. I have 6 patients, but I am also responsible for the LPN'S also. In which they have 5-6 patients. LPN's where I work can not take off orders, call doctors,( which I think is ridiculous) give meds through picc lines, they refuse to start IV's because "they aren't very good" So actually, I am responsible for up to 12 very sick patients! Then, I get floated to a floor where I have no idea about those "type" of patients. When I work LTC, I have up to 30 residents on evening shift, plus I again have to do IV'S. If I work night shift, I have up to 50 residents. I have been a nurse for 9 years and am totally burned out. Home care is better, but I found the patients think I'm a maid too. I have found that all facilities are the same, and they are just in it for the money. They don't care whether it's "safe" or not. As long as there is a "body" to work, they are happy. I'm sorry I don't have any words of encouragement, but this is just reality for me. Needless to say, I am working on a new degree!

RN to RD. What do you think?
I think it is a great idea. Do something you are going to enjoy. I am going back to school too, for a different degree. Nursing is just not the same as it used to be. The more you ponder, the more time is wasted that you could have put toward your NEW degree. Good Luck to you!

Getting hired at the Cleveland Clinic
you are not alone. i applied at lakewood and emh online, all part of the cleveland clinic. i applied on saturday and was rejected on the same sat. i got the same automated messages from both places. obviously, no one was working on sat. to personally review my application. i have 9 yrs. of nursing experience, so i was quite offended when i was rejected. i was going to go in and apply in person, but i have since received another job offer. if i were you, go in person and apply. i think you will have better results. good luck.

Jobs advertised but can'
Thanks for your input. I just thought, since they are always advertising, I would have no problem getting on. When I call human resources, I always get their voice mail, I left messages and no one ever calls me back. So that gets to be frustrating. I got a few calls from LTC facilities, so looks like I am going to stick with them until a hospital job comes along.

Jobs advertised but can'
I am going to vent here. Why are there so many ads in newspapers and flyers, as well as on the internet for RN jobs, but I can't seem to get an interview for any of the hospital jobs advertised? I live in Northeast Ohio and have put in apps at the Cleveland Clinic, St. John Westshore, EMH, and Community Health Partners. I have only 6 months experience at a hospital and the rest I have worked at LTC facilities. I am not a new nurse, I just have had more experience in LTC. They advertise jobs all the time but I can't seem to get in. urrrrr. Is anyone else having this problem or is it just me???

Big dilemma, advice??
I was offered a position at a long term care facility about 2 yrs. ago as a RN Supervisor. I failed my employee physical due to frequent migraines. I was honest and upfront about them during my physical. I was being treated by a neurologist at the same hospital that was doing my physical. They had access to my medical record through computerized charting. The job offer was revoke due to "they felt I would miss too much work due to migraines" Here is the thing, most of the nursing homes around here are owned by the same group. Now, they have another job at another facility open that I am interested in. Should I apply or am I just wasting my time? I don't know if I would have to see the same Doc or what? ( I wasn't very kind to him after I found out what happened) I was pretty furious with him when I found out he failed my physical. Because of this happening the first time, I had to have my neurologist put a note in my chart stating I was able to work. My migraines have since improved. The hospital owns tons of branches where I live too, and I am afraid they won't hire me either since they are all related.

Start school on 3/16/09 need advice
I remember my first day of class, the instructor stood up and said "only half of you will graduate". I found this intimidating and cruel on the first day of school. You will have good and bad clinical instructors. Some will like you and others will be "out to get you." Remember, you are doing this for yourself and don't let anyone get in your way. Study hard and devote yourself 100% and you will be fine. It's not easy. I think we all had times where we felt like giving up, but don't, if this is really something you want to do.

How do you keep your hands in good shape?
I use Vaseline then put soft thin gloves on. This helps with your feet too! This is the best and cheapest remedy.
