  1. I recently just went through a miscarriage and found out the baby passed 2 weeks before my body aborted it. I ended up choosing not to do a D&C (mostly because the baby was already out before I could take the info home and think about it overnight and talk it over with my husband). It was easier than I thought it was going to be. I ended up with some other Dr. that lacked in empathy and didn't know her head from her...... I hardly had any cramping and there was hardly any blood (at least not the labor cramps and "large amount" that I was told). Has anyone decided to not do the D&C and have the miscarriage on their own? If so, how long do the cramps and bleeding typically last?
  2. I received an epidural during my labor and was never restricted on fluids. It was very dry in there and I felt like no matter how much I drank, it was never enough. Something mad me so thirsty I was sucking down water like there was no tomorrow. Never once did they restrict my water. I think had I had juice or something else, there would have been issues.
  3. I've been really trying and have had only 1 interview lately. I really would like to get into the clinic or hospital but never hear anything after interviews? Anyone have any connections to get me in. I'm already over my "allowed number of applications" which is rediculous and want a change of job. I'm not sure if I like pain management.
  4. Wait a second. It shouldn't be how many staff are on that is the issue. It is what are the cares like. If there are 42 residents and they are all pretty much independent with only needing the assist of throwing their legs back in bed, yeah, they shouldn't be complaining. However, if all or most of these residents are completely dependent with PAL and Lift transfers, then I wouldn't be blaming them. Management never seems to get this. Everyone seems to think these residents sleep all night, which isn't the case. These people are woken every 2 hours, are up most of the night and then end up sleeping all day. What are your cares like and are the staffing appropriate for those cares?
  5. get Kaplan's NCLEX book. helped when I failed it. I learned it was because of my nervousness that I failed. The book helped me quite a bit and i was much calmer the second time
  6. I'd be very careful with this. If you speak up about it, it may backfire on you. Nursing instructors tend to stick very tightly together and going over their head or calling them on something could only upset them more. They will flag you and ride you even harder. My advice, keep your mouth shut, do ask they ask (with a smile), and do things even better than they will want. After you graduate, then go back to the dean. I was in the program with someone who tried it and she suddenly got flagged for this and that and was kicked out.
  7. I'm not asking for medical advice. I'm asking if anyone has ever had it and if so, what they found out about it..... I work with enough doctors that if I wanted to have it looked at, I would.
  8. I'm not sure if anyone has come across anything like this...but I'm hoping... About a month or 2 ago, I think I twisted wrong picking up my 2 yr old son. Since then I've had lumbar back pain occasionally. Now within the last 2 days, I get this squirmy feeling of pain in my back, as to where I can't sit still and have to get up and move. It comes and goes but its almost this "I can't sit any longer feeling". I have gotten this feeling in the past, but it was more of a rare, once in a blue moon thing. I think I did something to my back picking up my son but my husband keeps telling me "well either you're pregnant or on acid". Has anyone experienced that kind of feeling before?
  9. Thank you! I too, get sick of LPN's not being referred to as nurses.
  10. I work for a pain management clinic and our RN's primarily work in pre/post-op. One of our RN's also floats to clinic and works phone triage and works with our insurances (pre-authorizations). I don't know what the RN's are paid but we have excellent benefits (paid med, dental, holidays). We get holidays off and don't work any weekends.
  11. where did you find them?
  12. Whoa. Slow down. It isn't as bad as you make it out to be. I went to school full time for the LPN program, raised an infant, and worked 32 hours a week. Instructors told me I had to quit my job or cut my hours back to weekends. I couldn't or I would lose either the house or a vehicle to repossession. We were told in nursing school about the calculation test and I flipped about it. Once I actually saw the test, I was like "and this is what I stressed over??". If I can make it through 2 semesters, burning the candle at both ends, working 32 hrs a week, going to school with 17 credits, and an infant at home. You can do this. Stop worrying and take one thing at a time....
  13. I had a LTC resident pull out his Mic-key gtube. I am an LPN and have never been trained to deal with them coming out. The charge nurse was an RN. If a resident pulls it out, do they get sent in to the hospital or can a nurse reinsert it? I brought it to the charge nurses attn and he made the call to reinsert it himself, only for 1 hr and 15 min later for the resident to the whole kitten caboodle out again. I was iffy on putting it back in since he was able to pull it out with a inflated balloon. What is protocol for this?
  14. ummm nope that would be discrimination. Now, its borderline discrimination to deny someone because of a tattoo or piercing.... Threaten them with a discrimination lawsuit....
  15. Yep, that is how a changeover usually goes. I have never seen a changeover go good (well except when I trained in-those are nights guaranteed to go smoothly). For some reason residents have this thing where they can sense things and then will only want things when you are at your busiest...
  16. I just took my nclex-pn a month ago (graduated in dec) and am having trouble finding a job. I know the SCH is on a hiring freeze. Anyone know how to get hired into the SCH? I've tried everything to get in there. Any tricks? Advice? Help!! I really want to work there.
  17. 11. We're a hell of a lot cheaper than those that have been doing this for the past 50 some years :)
  18. This is NOT illegal. I used to work in assisted living and am on call in a different one right now. All new employees are given 4 hours in a crash course in medications. You are then checked off on skills with an RN. I have set up, passed meds, and given narcotics in assisted living. It was scary at first for me but I got used to it. It's a lot easier than you think. If you are unsure, I would ask for more training.
  19. I worked full time in LTC, raised an infant toddler, all while going to school and it was a struggle in the end to get through the program. I was falling asleep and they even knew it. If you do work, work weekends and holidays. It is too much to work and go to school.
  20. anyone know how long it takes to get your license number then???
  21. I took my NCLEX yesterday and went to check if I passed. I did not see a license number on the MN board of nursing website, but I saw this: Application status for spunky1281 Application type: Licensure By Exam Application received: 03-15-2009 Registered with test service: 03-15-2009 Confirmation of program completion: 01-06-2009 Authorization to test issued: 03-16-2009 Date scheduled to take exam: 04-14-2009 Permit issued: Permit expiration: Examination results: Passed License issued: Did I pass if there is no license number listed???
  22. Thank you everyone for your imput. I am strongly considering talking to HR about this. I don't feel I did anything wrong and told the nurse that wrote me up that I didn't do anything wrong. Granted yes, I could have called for help, but, no one could have booked it down the hall in time. Sure he could have aspirated but who's to say he couldn't have with me baby sitting him. Yes he is a ratherly large pt. that has some trouble moving his extremities, but I don't know of any hx of aspiration and I left him with the HOB elevated and a basin. I was gone for 90 seconds at the very most. I may only be a CNA 1 test short of being a licensed LPN, but I did what was best at the time.
  23. I graduated with a girl that had a tat about the size of a palm on the back of her neck. She got in the program no problem. Her way around it in clinicals....cover it up with a band-aid. Tats can be covered with band-aids. They will enforce you to take out a piercing though.
  24. Okay. Here's the thing, I work in LTC on overnights as a CNA. I got written up for this and wondering from everyone else if I should learn my lesson or fight it Res. X started yelling. When asking what he wanted, he stated he felt sick and requested I give him a basin. I gave him one, made sure he was fine, and then left his room. I went to answer another call light across the hall and put that person into the bathroom. I came back to check Res. X and he had a sm. amt of emesis in the basin. HOB was elevated, call light was within reach, and basin was in front of him. While I had been in with X, a tabs alarm had been going off as was a pressure alarm. This resident (whom I'll call F) has a hx of falls, is unstable with ambulation, and can be confused. Knowing that I was only 20-30 ft from Res. F's room and that all the other staff was on the other end of the hall and had no way of making it to her in time, I decided to check on the alarm. I escorted Res. F back to bed and returned to Res. X, who had thrown up more in the time I was gone. I alerted the nurses right away and cleaned up Res. X right away. I found out I was written up several days later from another nurse that hadn't even been working that night. When I questioned another nurse, she confirmed the rumor going around. I confronted the nurse that had written me up and she said that she had to do it (Chg nurse told her to) and that the Res could have aspirated. I was told that I should not have left that res and that I should have radioed for help on the walkies to respond to the alarms. Despite refusing to sign the write up and telling her I felt I did what was best at the time (a resident that falls easily was more of a priority than a resident that had emesis with a HOB elevated--and it wasn't like I left him and never returned). I knew the rest of the staff could not have gotten to her and thats why I left him. Was I in the wrong? What would you have done? Should this be fought?
  25. Don't give up on yourself. I'm in the same boat as you. I went through nursing school working a full time job, raising a infant, and going to school full time. I didn't even think I was going to graduate because I was a few percentages under passing. I was able to pull it up in time and did a kick *** job of passing my final. I scheduled my NCLEX and took it 2 months after graduation. I failed it. I heard it and was reminded of it, a lot, verbally from my husband. I really felt like a worthless p.o.c. I will go back for it and retake it but nothing would make me happier than to rub his nose in it, show him how wrong he was, and to tell him to kiss it.
