  1. Hello, I am a pediatric nurse (5 years) looking to transition to being a school nurse, this is something I've been wanting to do for some time. I have an interview next Wednesday for a substitute position. Any advice? I have some ideas about what a school nurse does since one of my colleagues was once a school nurse and I feel I will love it. However it still makes me a bit nervous.
  2. I would have them handy just incase they ask for them at the interview.
  3. hello! i was wondering if anyone can tell me the starting salary at mount sinai hospital for a part time clinical nurse position (rn-bsn). thank you in advance!
  4. Hi Germanshep, Just wondering how the interview went... did you get the position? I will be interviewing on Tuesday for a similar position at a local hospital.
  5. Thank you Nessa1980! I would appreciate that!
  6. Hi! Do you know of any upcoming open houses there? Thank you in advance.
  7. my thoughts precisely! i still have my hopes up, still applying there and at other hospitals... don't even know what to think anymore. maybe my resume is all wrong, i may not stand out enough. it is extremely discouraging not being able to find a job. can't get experience if no one allows you to practice nursing!
  8. congratulations on getting a job at lenox hill hospital... i have applied several times and no luck. i did volunteer work and 2 internships with them and the nurse recruiter even promised me a job for when i got my licence and now all they say is that things have changed since the merger.... can you give me some input on how you applied? all they tell me is that new grads are not being considered at this time... i graduated in may 2010 with my bsn.
  9. YAY!! Congratulations!!!
  10. Same here... I graduated May 2010. Had one school nurse job offer and that was the one and only call back after numerous applications. I know it has been asked before, but how the heck do they expect us to get experience if we are not allowed to acquire it!! it's incredibly frustrating!
  11. sje rn, congratulations on landing a job at a hospital! i have been searching since i got my rn license 5 months ago and nothing yet. i was offered a school nurse position in nyc but the pay was way to low, and from what i understand school nursing does not provide relevant work experience for hospitals. any tips on how to apply to land an interview? i have applied to several positions at north shore and all i get are the rejection emails. :-( thank you in advance.
  12. Thank you all for your reply... I read the FAQ after I had received my temp card and I was like WHAT!? But oh well I guess it was a lesson well learned!!! I am currently unemployed and job searching and thought this would be a great chance to boost my chances in landing an interview.
  13. Hello, I would like to know if anyone has ever used Piperhealth (http://www.piperhealth.com/) to get their ACLS certification... if so what was your experience like. I recently took the exam and passed, got my digital card and now they tell me that they do not provide a provider number... am I screwed?
  14. well i have my bsn, bls and acls graduated may 2010 and have applied to every single hospital in nyc, queens, brooklyn and still not one call. i've done internships in l&d, sicu, and icu before graduation, thought it would help but it seems its worthless!!! i really don't know what else to do. i have also applied to schools, nursing homes and nothing!

yes this is true! I did ask her what she has done about the situation and that she should require a lock for the meds and she tells me she has done so several times and that nothing has been done about it. I think I was just overwhelmed with all of the negativity she spit out. We spoke for a little over 45 mins and it was all complaints about the place I did not hear one positive thing come out of her mouth. I was so excited about the position.

So, I went today and met with the current school nurse... lets just say I'm not sure I'll ever go back there again! She made this place look like the last place any nurse will like to work. She tells me she can't wait to get out of there because of the high risk environment. She was hired to work for one school and since there are two schools in that buiding she also cares for the children in the other school as well. These are schools for children with PDD. She tells me that they are constantly trying to get meds from her without a doctors order and that they keep saying they wont make her liable for it. She said that kids a violent. Also that she has narcotics for some of the children and this is not under lock and key its just lying there in the cabinet which anyone can basically access. There are barely any doctors orders for the meds... and so on. I don't know, I still have not been offered the position or anything, but this is really scary, I am a new grad with no paid RN experience, don't think this is the place for me. It would be totally different if the school was of children without PDD.

hi! well my interview was actually changed to yesterday wed (dec. 8) i also think the interview went well. she asked me to go back and spend an hour with the current temp school nurse so that i may have a feel of what she does. i'm hoping this is a good sign! glad to hear your interview went well also! i was reading on some websites that it is good to follow up as soon as possible so that they may see your interest in the position, some recommended as soon as 24 hours. i sent a thank you note last night via email and also to let them know that i will be going over today to spend some time with the nurse. in the thank you note i also included a few things to remind them why i am a good candidate for this position. i think you should contact them and let them know ur interest. good luck! i'm sure you got the job!!!

  19. hello, i am a new grad and have an interview for a school nurse position, in a therapeutic day school in nyc next tuesday. i am very nervous about it since i have no idea what they will ask me. i am assuming that they will present different scenarios and i must say what i would do in a given situation, but i don't know. can someone please help me and guide me on what i should be prepared for and what it is expected of me. thank you!
  20. YES!!! I am so tired of hearing the same thing!!! Or the "don't worry you'll be working in no time.." meanwhile the bills and interest keep pilling up. ugh!
  21. I'm on the same boat!!! It is very frustrating especially when you know you have to start paying your student loans pretty soon! I am so worried... I have friends that graduated before me and it took them as long as 9 months to land a job and not in a hospital. I did some interships and at the end of the intership we were promised jobs and were asked to apply when we got our RN license... YEAH RIGHT!! I applied alright and no call. I've searched in nursing homes too and everywhere I look they require previous experience, words can't express my frustration at this point! I haven't been searching long, but I guess it rubs off . Good luck to us all!
