Education plan?
my school has a lot of prereq plus Associates degree requirements (math, activities, humanities....) the science pre reqs are impacted and we get registration dates on priority....basically the more units completed the earlier registration date. So I started with the associates degree requirements which can be done at the same time as the nursing program. So, by the time I get accepted into the program, i will have no other classes that I have to do. I am glad I've done it that way.

Plugging along
I have anatomy, speech and 2 PE classes. I am on waitlist for intermediate algebra and chemistry. If I get algebra, I will drop speech. I will prob keep anatomy and not take chem they are at the same time. I also work FT and am also chugging along. I just looked at it this way. I'm completing my 3rd semester which will give me 21 units. thats one class from FT load being accomplished over 2 semesters. I did that in 3 semesters which is the same time period as fall + spring. after spring, I will have only 4 classes left until i can apply to nursing schools.

Pre-req question
it takes as long as it takes. All I have is time. I try not to think of the obstacles that will discourage me.

Where on earth are CA students with a low GPA(3.3) applying!?!?!
if your GPA isn't high enough to be accepted into the lottery then you have to try another route like private school. The JC I'm going to is quite clear and upfront about their GPA qualifications. If your GPA is below it, then don't bother applying. Find out how you can get your GPA up? Repeat classes maybe?

Questions for those who Don't Pass Meds in the DIning Room
I was the one who posted initially about this change. We have a central medroom with the cart in it. We use the mars there and pop pills for certain residents based on urgency and personal habit. We put the pill cup in a tackle box thing and grab their treatments and head to their apartment. we do this for about 6-8 people at a time, making mini rounds. With food gets their pills scheduled for 9 and so they have them after breakfast. Keep in mind this isn't a SNF so we have different rules. We are allowed to pre pour meds up to 24 hours in advance, but our company limits this to your own next pass only, and you have to be the one passing if you are doing the pre-pouring.

whats primary care nursing?
10-12 patients is a lot just for a CNA doing ADL.
-
do you do med passes in dining room?
We just had this taken away and I could cry. keep in mind, its not a SNF. We don't keep a cart in the hall. The options are they can come to the med room or they can be delivered in their apartment. anyway, I thought it was rather natural for those who like their pills at the table for them be take them at the table right after they finish eating.

Help!! WE ARE EXHAUSTED!!!!
We don't have as much of a workload but we have showers on residents preferred days and times, and until recently they have all been PM showers. Now we run 3 on the floor during the AM hours, of which 2 do AM care and showers and I do meds. I also do some AM care and one shower due to the meds. Carestaff just took over the laundry and linen change which we divide evenly between AM and PM shifts. When we get more residents we will be d

Resident copped a feel
Today one of the residents wanted to see how tall I was, he said turn around, so I did. When I did he grabbed my rear end. two handfulls of it. I shrieked and swatted his hand away. He talks dirty but has been all bark no bite until today. Has this ever happened to you? I told my supervisor and we will be somehow getting him off my assignment list.

Students not working while going to school....
I am in prereq's and I work FT, I can only take 2 courses a semester because of it. I do blieve that I will have to quit working at least FT in order to make it when I get to nursing school

staffing patterns? How does your place work?
Here's the problem, there are a few of us who have set schedules, which really does impact the rest of the crew...forcing them to work weekends more than they want. (and I feel guilty--but I'm not willing to give up my post) are there senior people who get favored shifts?
-
staffing patterns? How does your place work?
In my facility the march schedule just went up, there were cuts from 5 days to 4 days and one shift was cut from 8hr to 6hr, and all shifts except the med techs got cut 30 minutes. Also, how does the facility handle weekends?

A New Grad in an ALF
(I'm a caregiver--not nurse) I always check inside trashes for important items, check the bathroom floor, shake pill cups. its a good idea to shake linens, I hadn't thought of that.

A New Grad in an ALF
will you be shadowing somebody?

What is a senior assisted living facility?
assisted living is exactly that, it IS long term care but not skilled nursing. It is a place to live and is based on a social model, not a clinical model. Ours has private efficiency apartments, and provides room, basic housekeeping, 3 meals a day, transportation to MD and shopping, and activities, all included in base price. Any level of care is additional. Level of care we can provide is medication assist and manage medication changes, bathing, dressing and ADL, transfers, toileting/incontinence care, coordination with outside services, behavior management, additional housekeeping, ambulation, meal reminders and escorts. We can do anything with medication except enemas, suppositories, and things inserted into lady parts, we can't break the skin so the diabetics must be able to poke themselves for the FSBS and their insulin. We also have a memory care area.

Pre-Nursing hospital jobs?
why would you need hospital experience in an acute care setting, I thought you were looking for a job? Caregiving would give you experience in a health-care with emphasis on social type setting, Assisted living is not the same as home-health care. Its experience with ADL and medications, its a social setting and a nice place to work. The experience you would gain would keep your skills as CNA up while you worked and waited to get the test done, then you could go to a hospital setting with at least some experience under your belt. (incontinent care, ambulation, transfering, cueing, activities, bathing, dressing perhaps medication technician which is an in house certification)

Pre-Nursing hospital jobs?

Assisted Living Center
In our community we have one nurse, and she has been on leave since Dec. I think that nurses aren't as needed as they are in SNFs. PS. I'm not a nurse, I'm the med tech.

Assisted Living Center
I am in ALF, we have all meds in locked room, narcs double locked, no meds in apartments. We have 3 care staff for 24 residents. One care staff in memory care, one care staff on AL, and one med tech...this goes for first and second shift. Third shift we have one staff for each part. activities are weak, about to change hopefully. we have lots of managers however.

inappropriate admissions....discuss
"totally continent, minimal meds, ambulatory" They end up showing up--602 in hand, with a dementia diagnosis, incontinent of bladder and bowel, total transfer assist, late riser, fussy and mean.

how much time for AM med pass?
I am managing now to get all 20 people done by 9:15 at latest, we need to stagger the MARs but I think that would be a job in itself to get the pharmacy to comply.

tips for quality study?
I tried the ipod/earbuds/ and away from home at starbucks and amazingly enough, it worked. I didn't have a lot of classical on my ipod, I had to make do with Pirates of the Carribean, Enya and something else my son suggested.

Live Scan question
I think where I work (California), the live scans are transferrable somehow. Perhaps you can contact HR or somebody who does a job like that?
