California begging for nurses? No way. Certainly not for new grads! Also flooded with experienced nurses from low paying southern states who chasing the $. Also re: moving where jobs are - hiring managers are becoming reluctant to take on new grads from high wage states because they know there is a higher probability of those RNs returning to their state of origin once they have that golden 6-12 mos. experience. They want people who will stay once trained. Can't blame they for that.

Hi BYU - just from experience, you'll never get through to a prof. in the online classes at SBCC they might have an address w/in pipeline but they won't answer. The one I had for Patho BARELY answered her internal "moodle" class e-mail. Like pulling teeth. Let me warn you to steer clear of Univ of Iowa's class - awful notes, terrible book and instructors that are the antithesis of helpful, I had to drop it and was told by the dist. educ. admin. that "there were problems with the class". Don't know about other out of state distance classes but if you can get something through a CC you're probably going to have a better experience and spend less to do it. You might try calling the HIT office at SBCC and seeing if you can get some kind of answer that way. I think the policy at SBCC is you're in or you're not - meaning no waitlist or exceptions but it never hurts to check it out and try. Good luck!

Can we all agree that perhaps we've got the cart before the horse here with regard to reforming health care? I don't think it will be possible to reform anything until we TRULY reform our elections process. Our system of governing works when it is by the people and for the people as the founding fathers intended. What we have now is government that is by the corporations (and insanely wealthy individual donors) and for those same entities. When we return our government to one that truly serves the people and precludes hijacking by big-money interests, then we can honestly analyze a complicated situation and derive a legislative solution that best addresses the issue for the good all all Americans. No solution will leave all parties better off. It's obvious that reform means some entities in a corrupted, dysfunctional system is going to "lose". We must have honest elected representatives who are willing to figure out and able to determine who should lose the most. They won't do that until they are elected in a fashion that hews to the original democratic principles that our great country was founded on. I fear in the absence of REAL campaign finance reform, any solution we get will be largely driven by the very interests that need to be regulated and won't be. The FACT that Max Baucus said everything was on the table except single payer means they were starting from a flawed analysis - they didn't even analyze all the options. Why? In the words of an esteemed Georgetown University physician who worked on the issue directly with Conners and others and supports a single payer model, "politically not feasible". Why is "single payer not feasible" to even consider as part of the analysis? Because the folks writing the laws are beholden to big money groups who would lose under single payer. Fixing campaign finance will help, but we also have to "fix" the devisive, propaganda spewing media that spreads misinformation and fear for the same big money interests. The only way to do that is for "we the people" to say enough and stop listening. If we don't listen they'll shut up and go away because they won't make any money if they can't pull an audience.

Hi, my SO works as an operator for a muni transit co. and they provide everyone with a lanyard that has a velcro "snap" at back - under significant pressure it gives and for that reason I like to use hand-me-downs lanyards from years prior for keeping track of my sailing knife. Agrripa - I agree with you, the whole "blame it on malpractice" argument is entirely fallacious. You rebutted it so well!!! I worked for a private health care insurer in a previous life, and I am quite sure THEY are a very large part of the problem. Not all of it, but very significant. If the congress and senate lets insurers, along with the other bad actors, write the "reform" law the way big pharma wrote the medicare drug bill, we're sunk. That's what I'm afraid of -- a good pitch and then just more of the same legislating for the benefit of corporate big-money donors instead of for the good of our country as a whole and working, middleclass Americans.

Uh, are you saying that you female colleagues will not be "breadwinners"? Maybe I misunderstood your last post, but IF you think most of your female coworkers don't understand what it's like to be breadwinners, think again, b/c they most definitely are breadwinners too!

Hi carolc415, I haven't had any significant human HC experience, but I have, like you, done quite a bit of animal welfare volunteer work and know how to set up & admin. feline sub-q fluid, prepare/give injections and so on... not the same as nursing, but as least we know we can handle the meds, blood, other body fluids and pt suffering. I included this info. in an addendum to my application b/c I thought it _might_ be relevant. Good luck with your application!

Hi everyone, I have been accepted into SMU's ABSN program and just want to affirm PP's input - I don't believe having prereqs in progress necessarily compromises your chances of getting in as long as the list is reasonable/doable. I had patho and pharm on my to be completed list and it was not an issue. I would definitely make certain that your admissions application included a listing of what is in progress along with firm to-be-completed by dates. If in doubt contact your admissions counselor and make sure they have the information! It seems to me that the people who get unwelcome surprises during the admissions process have failed to take the time to communicate directly with the appropriate contact at SMU. They are busy folks so call and e-mail. Be respectful and patient, but don't be a stranger. Good luck and try not to stress! PS If you have a lot of science pre-reqs in progress like Physio and Micro or Anatomy plus patho and pharm send spring 09 updates or even instructor letters verifying mid-semester grades just to make sure Admissions is clear that you are getting them done. It can't hurt.

From reading their website while doing my own research, it appears that they have significantly reduced the breadth of new-grad training opportunities. When I last checked they had eliminated all but ER and OR. I was bummed b/c when I looked at the end of '08 they had a great program with many specialties available. I was hoping to work there after nursing school...

What is a "non-believer" anyway? Maybe a Christian can explain this descriptor. It always feels vaguely pejorative. But maybe I am misinterpreting. OP, I would urge caution in coming out as an atheist. I have "come out" as a Buddhist in a forum where I had the option to leave and let me tell you, with SOME of these folks there is no reason, no logic and no respect for the divergent beliefs of others. For them, there is "only one way". They can make your work situation very uncomfortable and can be highly adept at doing so in an under-the-radar kind of way. My point is, if you have to stay in that job and want to be relatively happy, it just might be a mistake to let your beliefs be known. It should not be that way, but in my experience, a vocal, extremist majority that truly believes there is only one "right path" can make things very uncomfortable for the minority non-Christian folks.

Try pure shea butter, I sail in saltwater and find that it soothes cracked, chapped hands wonderfully and also makes your skin more water repellent for a period of time after application, works great on cracked cuticles too. After massaging it in wipe off excess to loose the "greasy" feel.

Hi Everyone, I'm new to this conversation - been lurking for a while... Anyway, I too, applied to the Oakland ABSN program for Summer 2009 at SMU and listed Oak as my first and SF as my second choice. Haven't heard just like everyone else, but here's my question. How can they admit the SF cohort, send them letters (as early as the first week in Feb.) AND give all the Oakland people a fair shot at it as a second choice? Somehow the logistics of the process at SMU doesn't make a lot of sense to me. The admissions person at Merritt told me that Oakland was the most competitive location with something like 166 applicants for 48 for spots compared to 78 each for SM and SF with 48 available spots at each of those locations. I'd think they'd have to sort out the Oakland location first in order to honor their promise that we'd be automatically considered for our 2nd choice if we didn't make our first. And for all the money they are going to charge me in tuition, I'm wondering if school could not have done a better job of being considerate with the admissions notices. Why not let everyone know at the same time. If delayed, then delay everyone. I can't help but think there is some kind of shell game going on... with a goal of maximizing the benefit to the school at the expense of the applicants. It also seems kind of disorganized and half-baked. I'm starting not to be so impressed. Am I just grumpy and tired of waiting? Maybe..Anyone else have some insights?
