Bad Rep for Med Surg
I worked Trauma Med/Surg - leaving in a couple of weeks. Tired of no help, 6-7:1 ratio, in trouble if you have any overtime, and management that has all these "great ideas" on how to do more work with less staff/help. Oh yeah lets not forget the horrible patient satisfaction scores that of course are due to the nurse's inability to tend to everyone at once - it's all our fault! - I quit. I think I'll be a Greeter at WalMart - hehe sure would be more fun.

*NEW* Med/Surg Nurse
You can not personally ever know everything you need to know on a Med/Surg floor from your schooling. Hopefully they are giving you a good long orientation to help with the most needed skills. You will need to ask for help throughout the next year or so. DON"T ever be afraid to ask if you don't know how to do something or just questioning yourself. It is alway better to be SAFE than sorry. I still ask for help after 2 years on my Med/Surg floor - somethings you just don't do very often. I had such an awful orientation as a new grad - that I went in to resign. They apologized and offered to give me just one preceptor and allowed me to be part of the team that created the new 12 week New Grad orientation at our hospital. I think our new grads are very well taken care of now. Just remember you can't know everything and will be learning new things for years to come. I love Med/Surg/Trauma where I work - it's the hardest thing I've ever done, but I love it! Hang in there and the best of luck to you.

Daily??? Newer nurses need "stand up" help!
I'm a new nurse too! (6 months) I know with time I will become more organized and will be able to get more done in a day. I'm still spending a lot of time picking up the pieces for the next shift....I just count it up to being new. The overtimes isn't so bad - so far no complaints from my manager. I think there will always be "rude" nurses - don't know why but it seems to be the reality. I like my job, still slow as a snail, and do deal everyday with a "rude" nurse or two. I just take it as part of the job - and I try not to be rude back - when I'm really tired I have been known to say "My days over - sorry". I don't have the extra energy to try to change a rude nurse to a nice nurse so I chuckle inside and think - glad my day is over. I think with time we will become more confident and able to just let it go...rude is here to stay-might as well get use to it - it's not right but it is. Hang in there, we worked hard to become nurses, and we will get better and quicker and will learn as we go what's important and what's not. Remember the first year is usually the most stressful - we're in the middle of the stressful part- it will end. Good Luck, take a deep breath and know that it must be doable because there are nurses that show up everyday to do your job - they've figured it out or they wouldn't come back - we will too!

need advice
Any job that requires multi-tasking will be a great help. I know it sounds weird, but waiting tables, having multiple customers, and trying to get to them all in a timely manner is alot like nursing. - Oh yeah, and keeping a smile on your face the whole time - good practice. Just a thought

Yep, someone opened up the drip on my son, and not only did he turn red, he immediately had difficulty breathing- was taken back in OR to be intubated- Scary but everything turn out O.K. - well they delayed his surgery for a few weeks.
