  1. Rent is even cheaper in Belleville, Swansea and Fairview Heights and you get a lot more. In addition, Illinoisians do not pay personal property tax for vehicle registration, Missourians do. If you buy a new car, have a late model car or more than one car, registering a car can be very pricey. I'd suggest living in Illinois and commuting to St. Louis for entertainment, rather than vice versa.
  2. Congratulations, That is great news, I know you will be busy but if you have time let me know how it's going. I am on the waitlist for Spring '11. I am number 15, so I am wondering if I should expect to get in or not.
  3. Hi! I was wondering if you were accepted into the Fall 2010 program?
  4. I know someone taking Micro & A&P II this summer, 6 week classes. She also just took A&P I & BIOL, 3 week classes. It is very challenging but she is still smiling.:)
  5. I forgot about that. I currently work in the world of ecommerce and computer fail
  6. If you have time, try researching some of the credentials of people who are now holding the position you are aiming for. Many deans for nursing schools have their bios on their websites. After reviewing a few, it may give you some direction as to how to accompolish your goal.
  7. Though I did not post the original message, this posting has really put things into perspective for me. Thanks for everyone's response, especially nurse12b. After reading your post, I feel like I can do this and be great at it! Though I have also done well in Algebra and Chemistry and understand they are part of the foundation for nursing fundamentals, I wonder how relative they really are for everyday nursing. Or, in 5 years will I still have to use a book to remember how to come up with the answer for (x+4)^2=-36. From experience I have learned that when you don't use a skill you lose it. For instance about 20 years ago, I took pre-nursing classes and learned to manually take a blood pressure, then the electronic cuff came out and became standard for use. Eventually I left health care. Today, as I prepare for nursing school, I recall all the things I learned so many years ago and I realize that many things I will have to relearn, i.e. "When you don't use it, you lose it". It is also interesting to see how computers may be impacting nursing and how they are perceived by users. Usually automation is put in place to reduce errors but sounds like it cannot be primarily relied upon.
  8. I am a pre nursing student and the same thought crossed my mind yesterday as I completed a math class. I currently work in IT and I can remember when I was taking programming classes we always learned to take a scenario create a program and compile it from the very beginning. When I began my experience that is how I planned to put my skills to use, from the very beginning. However, I can rarely think of an occasion that I had to write a program from the beginning, most of the time, I revised or copied a basic program. Due to deadlines, copying or revising was standard and we do not have the time to begin from 'scratch". So I was wondering if nursing will be the same way. Are we learning the fundamentals, however with modern technology we will not be starting from "scratch"? Are meds delivered to the floor with the dosage already calculated? If not, in the near future will meds be pre-packaged and calculated by a computer? I also notice that in the ER they already use the internet or other computer programs to diagnose. Do nurses have access to the internet or other software programs at the nurses station?
  9. I guess you are one step ahead of me then. I have not received a letter about the waiting list yet but I sure hope I hear something soon.
  10. I am also waiting for a response. I have received some feedback regarding financial aid but was told that is only routine. I contacted admissions and was told my application is going under review. I am so anxious to hear a response, each day I literally skip to the mailbox.
  11. In this economy, I don't think there is a degree you can earn that guarantees you a job after graduation. I am currently laid off with a degree in IT and can't find a decent job. Today Yahoo posted 10 degrees that are not worth graduating with today, nursing was not listed. We can only do our best at whatever we strive for and believe that hard work pays off without regrets.
  12. No problem, the background information helped bring it home! My mother complains about the foley catheter but her only alternative is surgery to divert her bladder. She is high risk for surgery so, when she weighs the pros and cons, she becomes more content with the foley catheter. She's had the foley catheter for almost a year now, with two short breaks that lead to an acute UTI.
  13. My mother had a stroke 13 years ago, she cannot empty her bladder on her own. She had to be self-catherized once to twice a day to remove the urine from her bladder. A "straight" catheter was used. It is about 6 inches long and straight, this was used to empty her bladder. It is pretty easy. Though anytime you introduce a foreign object to the body you increase the chances of infection. My mother now has a foley catheter because she was getting to many bladder infections with the straight catheter, since she did it twice daily.
  14. I am applying for summer session. I have researced many schools and decided to go with Chamberlain and it is definetly a plus that they are moving into a state of the art facility in Westport. As far as cost, it is very comparable to Barnes and UMSL, who by the way is increasing their tuition next year. If you are comparing to a cc, I would say it is rather expensive but so is Barnes and UMSL. I think that each person's experience will be different based upon learning style, life experiences and background so, I take most comments with a grain of salt. I am looking forward to the experience. UMSL is really the only school that I have heard nothing but positive things about and that explains why the selection process is so competitive and the waiting list. Wishing you well on your experience at Chamberlain!
