  1. yes, i have 5 years of nursing experience (er and pediatric icu) and still work prn. i taught adjunct for one year before i started teaching full time and have had that experience with several students. after the students saw that i cared about their success and was knowledgeable in the needed areas any doubts the students had left.
  2. I have put a great deal of thought into what doctorate program I want to complete over the last six months. My ultimate career goal is to become the dean of a nursing school or possibly president/provost of a university. My MSN is as a FNP (finished last fall) and I started teaching full time this spring. Let me say that I am relatively young (25) and know that there are not many universities that would even consider me for a leadership position because of my age, so I know I will have to wait a few years for my dreams to come to fruition. >

  4. The University of South Alabama has an online program for ADN RN's with a BS to go straight to MSN. It is an acclerated program. I just finished a ADN-MSN (FNP) program there and it was GREAT! Check it out.
  5. This is my first semester teaching full time. I have taught adjunct for the last two years and we have had a pretty successful post conference format. I have read several students post on this forum saying they did not like learning more in post conference. I respectfully disagree, I think that the end of the day is a perfect time to "shine" and show your students how much they really do know. Throughout the day, I assign each student a small topic to talk about in post conference. It is normally something easy that they did not understand earlier in the day (i.e. a student not understanding a pertinent medication). We have 15 weeks of clinical and we rotated the following five topics every three weeks to make sure the students understood them: RAAS, ABG's, cranial nerves, CHF, and asthma. We go pretty in depth with each topic. For instance, we make sure that the students understand the pathophysiology of CHF, the 4 most common pharm classifications used in treatment of CHF, all of the drugs that effect the RAAS and specifically how they work, and side effects. All of my students understand Lisinopril's mechanism of action, side effects, contraindications, labs to monitor, and nursing considerations. They also know why the chronic cough and angioedema happens and how to correct each of them. Some of our instructors say we are too tough on our students but they appreciate it once they graduate and can explain these concepts to all of the other students who graduate from different schools. Since we rotate these topics, by the time the third rotation comes around all of the students are very grounded in each of these concepts.
  6. Hi, I finished the FNP program at USA last fall. It was very intensive but the instructors were always there to help me along the way. You are responsible for finding your preceptors, but that really wasn't that difficult. I spoke with the program director and almost everyone who meets the admissions requirements gets accepted. I say almost because the applicants who are right on the line usually haven't gotten accepted. Hope this helps!
