  1. Thanks acubed. I read the post you started about this very question. I like your idea to do both the quickie med term AND the quickie A&P class. Have you gotten any personal recomendations from people you know on either of the quickie classes? I might do both too. Real A&PI in spring, algebra both summer sessions & then A&PII in fall. Call me if you want to chat... Tom Brown 214-680-3600
  2. Anyone know of an online Medical Terminology class I could squeeze in by the end of December? Anywhere ok. Want to get it under my belt before A&P starts in January...Thanks...
  3. Link to all TX CNA training programs: http://www.dads.state.tx.us/providers/NF/credentialing/NATCEP/credtraining.cfm
  4. Anyone have experience with either of these programs? Did you hear/think they were better training than doing ADN directly through EC? Anyone have thoughts on whther Presby or Methodist would be a better education? Any info appreciated....
  5. I was thinking of doing LVN for the same reasons as the thread starter. I know a guy who did this & immediately went to a nursing home doing weekend doubles & doing bridge program weekdays. If I were going LVN route, I would plan on getting a NH job to pay the bills & then plan on getting a hospital job as a new grad RN. However, I have decided to do my best to go staight to RN via ADN if at all possible. Hospital recruiter told me this week that they want CNAs to have a year worth of acute care experience. Sounds like the hospitals don't think too much of NH experience.
  6. I hated my first job as a CNA too. I had 14 pts, 7 of them bedbound & 4 others who spoke no English. I could not keep up & the other CNAs were not helpful & were merciless when it came to me being slow. Not sure I would ever have gotten fast enough to give anything like the care I would like to give. After 3 weeks I was offered a job in another LTC place where I have 7-8 pts, which makes a world of difference. Perfect, no, but MUCH better...
  7. Search for all CNA education providers in Texas: http://www.dads.state.tx.us/providers/NF/credentialing/NATCEP/credtraining.cfm good luck...
  8. I am applying to two hospitals for two jobs; 2 days at #1 & 3 days at #2.
  9. Thanks for the good info. I appreciate it. I take my state test next week for CNA & then will apply. I want to work 2 24hr shifts at one hosp with tuition benes on day one (but not great hourly pay) & then 3 days (2 24hrs & 1 8hr) with better pay & tuition benes in after 6 months. If I go belly up doing the CNA thing (which I don't think I will & hope I won't) I will reinvent myself ONE MORE TIME & do the unit scy as you suggest. Many thanks!
  10. In Texas, go to: http://www.dads.state.tx.us/providers/NF/credentialing/NATCEP/index.html Then look on the provider list link on the left of screen. there is a free class in Ft Worth. Dunbar, takes 2.5 months. Best value I found was Nurse Aide Academy in Lancaster; $450 & takes 4 weeks for school & another 3 until test.
  11. Hi all. Great thread. I am in the same boat as many of you. 50y/o, career #? (who's counting?) & start CNA school at a not too flashy joint in a not too spiffy part of town Monday. Only 3 weeks & flexible schedule to work in with my current semi-employment. I am hoping it helps show some initiative on my part & will get me a PCT job in a hospital ASAP, preferable without 6 months experience in a nursing home. The ultimate goal would be 3 7p-7a shifts with tuition benefits so I can use my own money for cat food just in case I need to...
  12. Wow. Kinda depressing.
  13. Seems in Texas they are fairly similar, depending upon the terminology of the hospital.
  14. My experience is that the jobs posted on the hopsital websites will disclose if they need a background check.
  15. Orzonus- I am trying to get a transporter job too. Can you tell me what they pay? Thanks...
  16. what are lmc & lcmc?
  17. I am planning to do the El Centro ADN program & am looking for a job that will pay for school. I interview with Medical City tomorrow morning. What is your job at HCA? As far as I know, you can use the HCA money but apply directly to El Centro; it is much harder to get in that way, but is an option.
  18. I am dealing with the same question. I suggest going directly to the hospital websites. As far as I know, Parkland (and all other UT Southwestern Hospitals) pays up to 2K per year, Presbyterian (Texas Health Resources) I think is the best, as they will pay for you (full time or part time) and any members of immediate family up to about 5K/yr, Methodist as stated in earlier post, & Baylor will pay. Medical City is evasive on their website, but you can always call HR general office or Nurse Recruiting & ask them. I have applied all over the place & am hoping to be juggling multiple offers ASAP! Good luck...some hopsitals also have a program if you work there where you are actually in ns with them & the acceptance rate as a hospital applicant is much greater. This is my understanding regarding El Centro's ADN...
  19. Need a little feedback on my "plan of attack" for nursing school... I have no hospital experience & tons of admin/clerical/customer support experience. My last career (financial services) dead-ended so I am doing my best to get an entry level hospital job & use tuition rembursement to pay for school. No luck yet...doing prereqs through 2009. I have applied for clerical/admin/financial counseling jobs as well as entry level patient contact jobs. Have applied for transporter, admissions, patient care tech (some cna "preferred", some not), customer service, unit secretary, meal delivery guy, and am starting to interview. Can anyone tell me what these pay hourly? I have applied to Parkland, Baylor, Medical City, Presby & UT Southwestern. Anyone have general words of wisdom/suggestions? Thanks!
  20. Dallas could go blue; the Obama folks are about delivering Dallas county. Clinton made a dent in it & this year the dent will be bigger. Have you voted yet?
  21. O- I am in Dallas, doing prereqs & applying online at as many hospitals as possible, but no luck so far. I do have an interview in the am fthough. Can you tell me (specifically or generally) what you make an hour as a transporter? Thank you!
  22. I have been in mortgage business (100% commission sales) for the past 5 years; due to ups & downs in the market, in life (etc) I now have a fairly negative credit report. My experience is that only jobs that have a security aspect (handling other people's money, or jobs in finance) really require a credit check. I would just decline authorization for the credit report, but expect that any employer will require a background check. I have been applying for entry level jobs at hospitals & have not had anyone in the healthcare field ask for a credit check yet.
  23. Methodist Hospital Dallas is having a job fair tomorrow. I am looking for an entry level job (no medical experience) that will support me during nursing school & also want tuition reimbursement from my employer. Anyone know the scoop on Methodist? The website is beyond vague... thanks! General info for non-Dallasites. The Parkland website is the best for hourly wage info. They list the pay for each job. If it says, negotiable, call Employment Services at 214-590-8266 & ask for details.
  24. 50 year old Eng Lit major here with last math class Geometry in high school. I had the same question; my ADN program requires college Algebra; I am having to test to see which "remedial" class I need to start with. I Googled "free algebra tutorial" & saved "algebasics" where I hope to get up to speed on Algebra. JMTC.
