i HATE my job. Does anyone else feel the same?
Dear OP.... Consider Emergency Nursing.

Tylenol IV
I've used OFIRMEV in our ER. It works great when the patient has a high temp, with vomiting and diarrhea. The IVPB decreased their fever and the PT was overall in a better state.

Emergency Nursing - Alpha personalities?
Ok...please is this a terrible question. Is Emergency Nursing a narcissistic field or just a field with Alpha type personalities? I'm a new grad!! I admit that....yes! I'm learning and I'm not stupid. My patients seem to respond to me very well but it is hard to fit in. The department I work in is FULL of individuals with 2 years or less experiened nurses....and we are understaffed. Some individuals are "super-nurses" and want to do all of the more difficult things .... That is Great!!! Until we are so busy they can't attend to it all!! I had a problem today and kept asking and asking for help.....it didn't come in time. The person will live, but may have to live with a slight problem because I didn't receive the help I kept asking for over, and over again! Of course, I received "dirty looks" and whispers ....Grrrrr frustrates me so much!!! Just a thought-filled question for the masses....thanks for any thoughts!! :icon_roll

ER nurse- advice/ what do you wish you knew before starting?
Congrats!!! I work as an ER Tech and will graduate from nursing school in December (hoping to continue in the same ER as an RN).....I have to echo about the feet hurting Do not go to the ER with your feelings on your sleeve....Be confident but ready to ask questions and constantly listening!!! They don't want to hear how much you know and will waste little time and telling you so! Always remember the patients are first....and learn to deal with each and every type. You will be faced with many personalities (I'm talking about patients and co-workers) but SAFE patient care is your bottom line. You will have some amazing opportunities and, yes, you will be there for the end of some lives. I had a gentleman come into our ER at 0840 and expired by 1125. It was unexpected for his wife but I did my best to help the RN, who was taking care of him, and comfort his wife (to the best of my ability.) Approximately 20 minutes prior to the man's death I rubbed his forehead (he was on a vent) and assured him he was not alone. You will do great and be ready to learn many many things!

What type of RN do you wanna be?
I'm starting my 4th and FINAL semester of NS in August and want to be an ER/Trauma nurse. I feel very lucky to be working as an ER tech right now (was hired after my second semester of NS) and the unit director says I'll be hired as an RN after I graduate in December! :bowingpur So employed is also a HUGE plus as well!! Great luck to all those beginning in August and all those continuing as well!!!

Clinical Instructor Woes
I feel for you!!! I posted a thread about a CI and didn't get many responses...so glad you got some replies!! Mine CI disappears and when she is there doesn't know what she is doing! Now I find out she has been moved to my fourth semester...I'm in second...I'm gonna have to go through this again! And yes.....I'm very afraid of being penalized for saying anything. Another student has been for disagreeing about something in class... This instructor gave our class the wrong information for an exam and had to give us points for the last exam...I'm totally freaked! So I feel your pain!!! I'm so down about the situation.... :banghead:

Frustration Unlimited
I really need some guidance.... I have an instructor that is confusing! I'm not being difficult on this person....just honest. They bring notes to class, pass them out, read over them (some) and then tell us to take them home and that we are responsible for the content. The HUGE problem....The clinical area!! This person is not a complete instructor in the clinical setting. They will not let students do many procedures on patients...they leave their students alone with their assigned patients (by alone I mean disappear)... Meds are ALWAYS given late.... If this person is unsure about an IV med their statement is (I'll ask the nurse...this person IS a nurse...) The person doesn't know how to work the computer system in the hospital (btw they work in this hospital...) One student was waiting to go into a procedure area and a nurse pointed to this instructor and told the student "That is one nurse you do NOT want to be like." ...the student said.."Do you know that is my instructor??" The nurse responded..."Yes..that is why I am telling you that!" Now......I find out this instructor has been transferred to my final semester of school! So I have to go through this AGAIN! Unfortunately, I cannot go to anyone because we are in a school that it tends to be the "ole girls club"....and I'm afraid of what will happen!! Every student that is with this instructor is very upset and the previous students have been treated the same way!! I just don't get it... I've sorta "sweetened" my post because people from my class read this website and would recognize this scenario. Am I right......I'm just toast in this situation? Thanks for your time!! :banghead::banghead:

WANTED: Nursing student tidbits of advice
I have a question?? When you "debind" and put the sections in different binders do you take them to class with you? I know, with our instructors, we have had assignments but have arrived in class and been referred to other chapters during discussions.... Just curious....I'm trying to understand this concept and the positive options :wink2: Thanks ya'll ....... :stdnrsrck:

WANTED: Nursing student tidbits of advice
ok....one more thing...and this may sound very silly to some but it happend to me!! shave your significant male other (if you have one) if you have never shaved a male before :imbar i had a patient i was taking care of and he said "i would like for you to give me a shave before you leave today" ....have you ever "shaved before?" yes...that was his exact question! i looked him square in the eye and said "yes sir i have..i'll be right back!" i went directly to my instructor and told her my patient wanted a shave and that i had never shaved a man before....she said "well, there is a first time for everything!" i didn't lie to my patient...i had shaved before...just not a man! :uhoh21: i got what i needed...received some direction from my instructor...and shaved my patient. my clinic group heard about my "patient's request"...many went home and practiced shaving their significant others that week! lol obviously the story is longer...he had oxygen, the shave had to be quick...and so on... just my just wanted to pass along something that happend to me...... :uhoh3: :stdnrsrck:

WANTED: Nursing student tidbits of advice
this is just my :twocents: but i would go to a place like office depot to buy a 3 ring binder. i purchased a "good one" at wal-mart and it only lasted a month. the binders at the office supply stores are very sturdy and worth a little extra cash. you will save in the long run!! .....and of course....have fun!!! :stdnrsrck:

WANTED: Nursing student tidbits of advice
So much EXCELLENT advice in this thread!! I'm starting 2nd semester of an ADN program this fall....last spring we always told each other the same thing before exams. A fellow nursing-student friend gave me a magnet this summer with the saying printed on the front and I've seen it repeated over and over in this thread......great advice ............Just Breathe :redbeathe:redbeathe:redbeathe:redbeathe:redbeathe:redbeathe

I Would Like Your 6 Cents
I'm sure a repeat question but here goes! I'm finishing my first semester of nursing school and need some advice. I haven't "worked" in a hospital have been doing clinical work during school. I know you guys have heard this from several people but I have my heart set :heartbeat on Emergency nursing. I've had some rotations through areas already and keep getting this idea affirmed over and over. The areas I've been in the, nurses just appear to hate what they are doing and really discourage people from going into nursing. I know some people that work in emergency care and they LOVE it! No discouragement... I know the "med-surg route" is suggested but my sister-in-law was on that floor in one of the large hospitals near me and frankly she was treated like an animal. I almost came unglued on the nurse taking care of her...and I PROMISE I'm not being a "critical" nursing student. It was an ugly situation. Advice.... What I would LIKE to do is write to a local hospital and ask for a job as a nursing assistant in the ER. (All they can do is say no.) Explain that I'm a nursing student and I would really like to work in the ER after graduation. I could then work into a nurse extern position when I'm eligible and be training and becoming familiar with the ER. There are no positions open online that is why I thought of contacting the HR directly... Graduation comes and I'm familiar with my environment and they don't have to worry about me being uncomfortable.... Does this sound COMPLETELY unreasonable with my lack of experience. I'm 43 years old and I'm willing to do what it takes. But I don't want to do too much either. Any advice will be so appreciated.....please be gentle as well....I'm also a rookie "greenhorn" student. I posted this in another area...I'd really like some advice...thanks so much for your time everyone.
