The dumbest thing I ever said to a patient.
Sometimes my brain to mouth filter goes dead, too. One time as I untangled multiple IV lines, along with pulse ox, and PCA line, and machine cords on an ambulatory post op, I asked the pt jokingly, and also without thought, "Were you dancing around the pole?" I instantly realized that the question had sounded wrong, and started to explain myself, but thankfully the pt and his wife had a good sense of humor! They knew that I had not meant it in a wrong way, I could not even finish my explanation as we were all laughing so hard. Thank God for good humored patients...

Funniest/strangest dementia patient stories
When i was in LTC, the administrator used to like dropping by unannounced. One morning she walked in while I was in the dining room with all my residents. One of my LOLs with dementia calls me over to her table, which happened to be by the dining room entrance, as the administrator walks in. She very loudly asks "Who the hell is the uptight ***** and who invited her over to dinner?" Needless to say, the admin never showed up during meals again....

Tylenol IV
Ok, so the other day I receive a post op on our floor with an order for Tylenol 500 mg IV q8h x2. I thought the doc had written the order by mistake.... IV? So I call him to clarify, and he tells me yes, administer it via IVPB. Pharmacy mixed it and sent it up to the floor. Per the pharmacist it was recently approved by the FDA and has been in use for a short time. Have any of you had to administer it yet and what are your thoughts on it? Thanks for your input :)

Night shift -- can you just take it easy, please?
I do understand where the op is coming from. Don't want to offend anyone but...I too have worked both night and day shift and can say that day shift is by far busier than nights. I personally try to leave a blank slate for the oncoming shift to work with, be it days or nights. But its upsetting that the one time that you were so busy, you didn't get to pee during the whole shift, and leave something to be followed up on of by the following shift, they get upset and make faces, roll their eyes, etc. It's 24 hour care.
