  1. Honestly I would look for another job. I am lucky to still be in county employment but I know privatizing would slash pay and benefits
  2. I think that you should have at least a year of med surg. first. Corrections is very autonomous and tou have to be able to detect malingerers
  3. I am a nurse me at a county jail. I had an inmate that was on trazadone for sleep. Per the orders from our jail physician we are not allowed to give sleepers. Inmate angry over this and I was first nurse to not give med. Inmate told another nurse that she was going to KILL B@#ch meaning me when she got out. Anyone have similar experience?
  4. I believe everyone should have access to lifesaving care, however there are many decent working people that cannot get the care that some inmates get. Interesting story. My husband has had a difficult couple of years. He lost a job and mentally had a difficult time for a while. He had some dental issues that did not get taken care of and now needs extractions and dentures. Unfortunately our dental insurance has a low cap. His teeth are causing chronic infection and health issues but no dentists will accept payments unless you can get a special credit card which we cannot qualify due to some financial issues after his job loss. I am just frustrated because if we were on welfare or he was in prison he could get the care that we pay lots of taxes for others to have.
  5. Wow. I am so blessed to have the officers that I work with. They are awesome and respect my judgement greatly.
  6. I think you need really good assesment skills. 9 times out of 10 inmates in a county jail are malingering but there is always that tenth time. I have started iv's and shipped people out via ems. You need to have good assesment skills to recognize the real issues:smokin:
  7. I work at a county jail in mi. and love it. We are still county employees not contract and I think that makes a difference.
  8. That is not normal at the 327 bed county jail that I work at. I am very lucky though, we are one of the few jails left that does not contract medical out and we are all RN's with experience and county employees with good benefits.
  9. I am an ADN working slowly on a BSN program. Hospitals are pushing for nurses to get the BSN but the hospitals in my area do not have very good tuition reimbursment. If they want people to obtain the BSN then it would be nice to have a little more help in doing so....
