A newfound appreciation
And imagine doing this in 5 buildings, simultaneously! EVERYDAY! Early childhood through 12th grade! LOL - It's not for the weak. I'm a mental health professional, case manager, informatics expert, telehealth RN, potty-trainer and birth-control advisor during any given hour ;-) I question my sanity at the end of each day. It's the toughest nursing job you'll ever love!

Sketchers
If you wait until Kohl's has their 15/20/30% off sales, you can get a great deal! I just got my first pair from Kohl's online on sale for 89.99 and 30% off. Walking around the house in them right now to get used to them and see if I will be able to stay upright (I am a known clutz with some balance issues!). The only thing I've heard negative from co-workers is the "balance" issue, such as when you are boosting someone or transferring, that will take time to get used to. I'm hoping they work some magic on my back and hips.

Nursing Journal Article - HELP!!
Thank you for your efforts!! I found an article a few minutes ago entitled "Is your staff prepared to handle a diabetic crisis?" from a publication entitled Nursing Homes, and it is written by an RN. I am hoping that this will sufice as I can glom some good information from it. The problem is that my instructor is rather picky. Wish me luck! Thank you again!!:)

Nursing Journal Article - HELP!!
I have done exactly what you have done and the articles are not specifically relevant, or they are not written by a Nurse, or they are not from the past 5 years. Thanks, but I need to meet all of this criteria. I wish it were that easy!! I'd be done with my write up and relaxing by now!

Nursing Journal Article - HELP!!
I'm at the end of my rapidly unfraying rope trying to find a nursing journal article relevant to the teaching project I am preparing for my clinical transition course. I will be training nursing assistants in a nursing home to take blood sugars and must augment this teaching with information concerning diabetes and S/S of hyper/hypoglycemia. I need to find a nursing journal article pertaining to the education of diabetes for CNAs or general information on diabetes in the elderly or blood glucose monitoring. Something along those lines. If anyone has any suggestions or can point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it. Oh ya, and the article can only be from within the past 5 years. I have searched for HOURS already. Thank You!!

Need your help - trying to change school policy
Western Technical College in WI requires a 78% average on all exams. Any other assignments in the course will not matter if you do not maintain this average on the exams. You would be required to retake the course (which they will let you do only twice during the program). You must pass all generals with a C, which is 78%. They have a 95% pass rate on first time NCLEX. Good luck with your plight!

What is the opposition to Universal Healthcare
How embarrassing that there are STILL people in America who think that Obama is proposing a "Socialist" Universal Health Care plan. Get educated! And even if he were - GOOD! What a selfish, greedy, unpatriotic notion to not want to help provide for your fellow man! I WANT my tax dollars to go towards the HEALTH and welfare of our nations citizens, NOT to send them to a "war" to line some greedy, worthless politicians pockets. My husband and I are HARD-WORKING, educated American citizens who have had to rely on state-funded health care for the past 6 months. What is really sad about this system, is that we could lose it at any moment for making "too much" money! HA! But those who do not work, and therefore do not pay taxes, have no chance of losing their health care. In Wisconsin, you can pay a premium, depending on your income, and recieve excellent health care benefits. There are some deductibles for higher income brackets, but you still need to be below a certain amount. I we were to take my husbands insurance, it would cost us $950/month with RIDICULOUS deductibles and co-pays. We would go bankrupt instantaniously!! THIS IS WRONG! Everyone should have the opportunity to buy reasonably priced health care. Restrictions and restraints need to be put on profit margins of pharmacuetical companies, INSURANCE needs to DISSAPEAR - or mandated as non-profit, as well as health care institutions. If you work for a health care institution, your care should be free. We are being taken advantage of by Insurance and pharmaceutical companies, and this needs to stop. We need to insure people so that they will seek out preventative care when needed. I RESENT the statement saying that people recieving public assisted health care take advantage of the system - THIS IS NOT TRUE! My family seeks health care when necessary, not on a whim because we are covered.

Do you think midwife deliveries are less safe than doctor deliveries?
As a future Midwife - No! In almost all other westernized countries - 70 - 80% of births are attended by Midwives. In America - 5%. America has one of the highest Maternal/Infant death rates of all of these countries. You do the math!

No time for being sick . . . .
I'm feeling your pain!! I've been trying to sleep as much as I can and study as much as my clogged up head can take. I even went to work for 4 1/2 hours today thinking I could work my way out of feeling like poop - not such a brilliant idea!! I wish you a quick and speedy recovery and also to anyone one else juggling "the crud" while being a Nursing Student - not fun, not fun at all!

Running out of gas
Oh No - Hang in there!! You can do it!! You can see the light at the end of the tunnel at this point, you just have to push to get to the summit! Ok, that was 2 analogies mixed into one - but it makes sense! "I know I can, I know I can" Wash, rinse, repeat this as often as necessary. Turn to us whenever necessary, we will be your cheerleaders!:specs:

[Almost] halfway done with 1st Semester.
Kind of scary! Our Skills instructor told us that graduation rate was about 50% of the people who start - that's not so good if you ask me!

Venting about classmates with families...
I asked one of my instructors the other day when the class schedule for next semester would be out. I added that for me, the sooner the better because I like to plan in advance care for my children, and to give my employer an idea of how much I will be able to work. I am lucky having a job that I work PRN. Another student snidely remarked, "I don't have any kids and I would like to know also". The comment I made concerning my children, was not to compare my life to anyone elses. I was expressing what my life priorities were, and why I was inquiring about the class schedule. It was not a comparison. I replied to the student that I understood that everyone has their own reasons, children or none, and need to plan their lives around coursework. I would bet that at least some of the individuals in your class, are not making comments to compare their lives to yours, but simply venting like you are doing here. I know there are some who will complain no matter what their circumstances, and unfortunately, there are people like that everywhere.

[Almost] halfway done with 1st Semester.
I can't believe we're halfway done with Semester 1 already. Crazy! I am feeling pretty good so far. I was a little overwhelmed having 2 BIG exams in a 2 week period of time, but I did well on both and things have calmed down a little. I set goals for myself each day, and take it one day at a time. Each time an assignment is complete, a test is taken and passed, or a clinical day comes to a close, I envision myself closing a door behind me and entering another room with puzzles to solve in order to get to the next door. I view it as a challenge, and this is what drives me. We can do it!!
