Nursing student or student nurse?
I just like asking random, off-the-wall questions once in a while. I think it lightens the mood:nurse:

RN student assigned to LPN???
I didn't say that it was based on their title. I just said in my experience it seems that the LPNs are nicer.

Nursing student or student nurse?
I figured since I am in a 2-year program, I would call myself a nursing student the first year then a student nurse the 2nd year since it sounds more official to me. How do you refer to yourself??

RN student assigned to LPN???
I am also an RN student and have been assigned to both RNs and LPNs and in my experience the LPNs have been much nicer to me, more caring toward the pts and happier to answer questions than the RNs have been. The RNs seem annoyed to have a student assigned to them. It's like they have forgotten that they were in our position before. I wouldn't worry if you are following an RN or an LPN. You'll still learn a lot from the experience:nurse:

Any other ADNs wishing they had done BSN??
I haven't really looked much into other school's programs because the hospital this RN-BSN program is affiliated with is the hospital I want to work at and (according to the little recruiting party they had for us) they will pay for us to get our BSN after we graduate from this ADN program. I was going to talk to my advisor Tuesday and see if she knew anything about it. Maybe there are ways around some of those other classes??

Any other ADNs wishing they had done BSN??
That's my plan as well. I want to become a NP. The RN-BSN program I am looking at is supposed to be for the 'working nurse' but when I looked at it today, it was showing that all the regular BSN pre-reqs had to be met before you could apply for the RN-BSN program.

Any other ADNs wishing they had done BSN??
I'm in an ADN program and plan to get my BSN through an RN-to-BSN program. I was looking at the school that I plan on doing that through and you still have to do all the courses that any other BSN student has to go through!! Although I will have a lot of the credits by the time I get to that point, I am really starting to wish I had just gone the BSN route to start with!! Anyone else??

Class sizes
There are 48 in my Adult Nursing I class. That's including at least 5 who are auditing the course.

Taking two anatomy classes at once
It depends on how in depth the instructor goes in to A&P. With the instructor I have now, I wouldn't even think about taking A&P I and II at the same time!! Way TMI to absorb at once!!My school doesn't offer it like that anyway. A&PI is a pre-req to A&PII. With the people that are going to a different college for their A&P that does offer them both at the same time, from what I understand it's almost like a high school course. I'm not sure how helpful it would be for nursing practice... Good luck!!

Gearing up for next semester : )
I'm glad to hear I am not the only one to get up super early for clinicals!! I normally set my alarm for 0400 so I can wake up (I am NOT a morning person), get a shower, get my daughter up, get her ready for daycare and be out the door by 0600 so I can drop her off and be at the hospital by 0645. Thank goodness we only have one clinical day per week this semester!! We had 2 days back-to-back per week last semester. That made for 2 very long days!!

Cheap books online? Textbook website suggestions??
I am considering buying my textbooks for this semester somewhere other than the college bookstore. Any suggestions for websites?? Thanks!!

Mnemonic for cranial nerves
The one in my A&P book was : On Occassion Our Trusty Truck Acts Funny, Very Good Vehicle AnyHow. And for if they are motor, sensory or both: Some Say Marry Money But My Brother Says it's Bad Business to Marry Money. Hope this helps!!

Gearing up for next semester : )
This will probably sound dumb but what is a practicuum? I have seen it in other schools' curriculum but I have never heard it at my school. What is it??

Skin to skin contact
My daughter was born 10 weeks early by emergency caesarian due to severe preeclampsia so I didn't get to touch her at all until 2 days after she was born. The NICU nurses strongly suggested skin-to-skin contact (they called it kangaroo care). I tried it and I will say my daughter's VS did improve and she did take my breastmilk much better when we did the kangaroo care. If we do decide to try for another and I make it to term without any problems, I will definitely have them place the baby on me and wait for the cord to stop pulsating. That was what I wanted the first time before the pre-e came into play...

Gearing up for next semester : )
Anyone else getting excited for next semester to start?? I was telling my husband how excited I was then I got to thinking that it must mean that as hard as the first semester was to adjust to, it didn't crush my spirit about becoming a nurse:nurse: I'm am taking 4 courses again this semester but it is laid out much easier time-wise (read 'more time to study':typing) I'm taking General Psychology(hybrid), Adult Nursing I, A&PII, and First Aid & CPR. What does your next semester look like??

ATI Testing!!!!
We have the books and stuff but we just got the access codes about 2 weeks before the end of the semester. This is the first year the school has used them so I don't think they have quite figured out how they want to incorporate it into their curriculum yet. I guess we'll find out...

What Dx to use for asthma exacerbation?
Thanks!! That was very helpful!!

What Dx to use for asthma exacerbation?
We're supposed to pick 3 and we are not supposed to use 'risk for' unless the CI approves it. So I'm thinking: 1. Ineffective Breathing Patterns 2. Ineffective Airway Clearance 3. Anxiety I really wanted to use Risk for Impaired Respiratory Function so I may run that one by my CI tomorrow... We don't have to do the 'Dx r/t ____' yet. We're just keeping it simple. Would you use these Dx?? Any other suggestions?? Thanks!

Anyone else experiencing burnout??
It's not that I thought this was going to be an easy program, it's all of the outside stuff (like my kid getting sick and having to miss school) on top of the stress that the end of the semester brings anyway that's getting to me. It's really staring to take it's toll on me. I was just trying to vent and connect with some people that were feeling the same way.

Anyone else experiencing burnout??
I'm not sure if it's just because it's the end of the semester or stress or what but I am all of a sudden feeling incredibly burned out!! My daughter was sick this past week and I missed both clinical days, we had foley checkoffs right before Thanksgiving, next week (12/10) we have NG tube insertion, NG feeding, enema and restraints checkoffs and we have only had the dummies available to us since 12/1, we have a Fundamentals test 12/11 and after the test we have to sit down with our clinical instructor for our Final Clinical Evaluation. On 12/12, we have our Head-to-Toe Assessment checkoff. Then 12/17 and 12/18 we have Final Exams (I have 2 nursing, 1 A&P and 1 Math)!! Then to top it off, I am having surgery on the 19th so that I will have Christmas Break to recover before starting next semester. I'm not sure if it's burnout or just me feeling overwhelmed by everything that will be going on in the next couple of weeks (or both!) I really want to finish this program but it's a little hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel at this point. Anyone else??
-
Had foley checkoffs today!
I'm a competent foley inserter!! Woohoo!! It's funny. So far this has been the most 'technical' checkoff we've been required to perform and yet it's the one I was least worried about. Go figure... I hope everyone has a nice holiday!! Enjoy your break!! You've earned it!!

Does this nursing dx sound right??
We haven't gone too deep into nursing dx yet but does this sound about right as far as nursing dx go: Impaired Physical Mobility r/t pain secondary to abdominal surgery?? Pt had laparoscopic colon resection. I know it's probably not the most sophisticated dx but we're keeping it simple for now. Thanks!!

Pharmacology & Dosage Calc Tests - What did you have to know?
We were taught to round up. So as another poster replied: 0.45=>0.5mL.
-
Only a nursing student...
Sounds like fun times... This stuff is 'lemon-vanilla' flavored (who in the world came up with that combination?! lol) and they recommended mixing it with Sprite. My appt got moved to Friday at the hospital (the radiologist office that they were going to send me to apparently doesn't take my insurance) so maybe that will give me time to mentally prepare for the flavor of this stuff:barf01:

Pharmacology & Dosage Calc Tests - What did you have to know?
I just had a dosage calc test this past Monday. Here's a sample question: The physician ordered Kanamycin 17mg IM. You have available a 2mL vial containing 75mg. How many mL should you give?? We had to do metric conversions too. Not too difficult but it's not a pharmacology course so that could be why:nurse:
