  1. DON'T TAKE OFF A SEMESTER! If you want to take a month long CNA course, switch your courses around to keep your time at the CNA program free up. Try to do both if you can.
  2. try and get a job at a home health agency, they're always willing to hire ppl
  3. I'm sorry you had such a crappy day! Like everybody else has said, give it some time and soon enough you'll have left over time to twiddle your thumbs and answer nurse calls! How long have you been a CNA? I've gotten used to being told nasy things by patients, but not by other CNA's and coworkers. They're expecting way too much! Next time they say something, ask how you can improve. I wouldn't go out of my way in a separate conversation . If they bring it up again, ask them politely. You don't want to accidentally **** off the wrong person.
  4. Since I've gone through training, I've soo badly wanted to work in a hospital. I am currently a Home Health Aide and have gained a year experience from this job. I was wondering what it takes to get hired at a hospital and what working in a hospital is like. I've turned in about 9 applications for CNA positions at local hospitals, equipped with a decent resume and I've tried to call all the places I've applied (hate dealing with most Human Resources) usually getting an answering machine or them telling me to call back in a week. I'd love some help. Thanks!
  5. Thank you! Don't they take summer too?
  6. I'm so happy, I was considering going to SCF for nursing, but it seems like FGCU's nursing program is a bit easier to get into, and it won't cost nearly as much. How many applicants does FGCU take per semester?
  7. for the weight loss portion, should i be doing the elliptical machine...or is there something wrong with that? does it actually have the correct number of calories lost? i know it's no good for running purposes, but for weight loss alone...i think i need to do that before i can do anything else.
  8. I'm not currently a nurse, but I am a high school senior who is very interested in military nursing. I plan on going to FGCU for my BSN. I do have quite a bit of a weight problem and have had it all my life. I know I can do the sit ups required, and most likely the push ups as well, the running might be a bit of a problem though. Is it true that swimming test can be substituted for running? I heard that from one on my JROTC friends and it got my all excited because I am a fast swimmer:yeah:. I also know that i'm way above the weight or the body fat limit for my height, what are some long term weight loss tips? I have at least 4 years to do this, so it's not like I have to lose wight right this minute, but I know if i do a crash diet, i'll just gain everything back. Thanks for your help!
  9. Thanks, I guess I'll just bust my butt to lose weight then
  10. I've become interested in becoming a military nurse and I have some questions about certain things that I couldn't find the answers to online. What is the danger of becoming a military nurse, do I have to be concerned that I could lose my life like any other soldier? This is very important to me. I frankly don't want to die I know that there is a weight requirement for military nursing and I am pretty overweight, do nurses get to attend the military fat camps? Do I need to go to basic training? If I receive my BSN, would I be considered an officer? Does the military have a reserves program for their nurses? Do you actually get to work in hospitals or is it out on the field. I know they're taking as many people as they can overseas at this point, and I assume, since there is a war going on, there wouldn't be that great quality of medical facilities around. Just wondering if ya'll get to work in hospitals or is it all in tents? when I was considering going to get my MD I was seriously considering going into the military, but I never actually researched it. I appreciate any help, thank you! :loveya:
  11. My brother currently has the option between taking a Medical assistant course or a Surgical Technologist course (each one takes 2 years to complete). In the medical assistant course he will be able to be certified in phelbotomy, radiology tech, and medical coding on top of medical assisting (FL doesn't offer CMA at this time, according to my knowledge) The surgical tech program doesn't offer certification, but I don't know if it's needed...in the state of Florida (although I've read that most places prefer certification) Which path sounds better? I have a rough idea of how much each profession makes, but i'm not entirely sure how much they would make in the current economy and if somebody with no experience in any of these fields could get a job. If you guys would put in your 2 cents that would be great!
  12. Between you guys and the Student Doctor network, i've figured out some game plans in case being an MD is something i really want.
  13. I was looking on the USF medical school site and it looks like that only 1 gen chemistry and 1 organic chemistry is required...plus a physics and a biology(i know bio and chem are required for a BSN program) so that'd be only 2 extra classes? But even with that, are medical schools willing to take somebody who didn't major in one of the three major sciences?
  14. I'm currently a high school senior, finishing up my prerequisites to get into the local nursing program. I'm not saying that I'm using nursing as a spring board to become a doctor (i know that if i really wanted to be a doctor i should major in either biology or chemistry) but i was wondering if there are any cases where one could have a BSN with enough science to get into a medical school or if this is totally unheard of. Is being submerged in the medical field a bonus for some medical schools? If anybody has any information I would really appreciate it...it's kinda hard to find this information online by just looking at websites :wink2:
  15. How long is the waiting list for UCF do you know?
  16. In my CNA program we had somebody who was almost in her 60's and then we had me who was 16 at the time. Big age gap...but she did just fine and was super healthy and could do everything that everybody else could. I don't know about the mental strain of the RN program but I know that the physical strain is not as bad as the physical strain of a CNA. I think you'll be fine if you can mentally handle it.
  17. Hi, I"m going to be moving to Kissimme FL before i graduate from high school and so my best bet for nursing would be to get my ASN from Valencia and then transfer to UCF for my BSN. i was just wondering how long the waitlist is for valencia. I read a pretty old thread that said that the waitlist would be over a year. If that's the case then I think I should consider just going for my full BSN first. Does anybody know about Valencia Community College's nursing program at all? Is there any info you can share with me? I'd appreciate it very much! Thank you
  18. https://allnurses.com/nclex-discussion-forum/pearsonvue-trick-really-374829-page55.html link to an answer from this site...
  19. I'm a CNA/HHA...I greatly dislike my current job somed days...other days it's a getaway...depends on the patient honestly. but I don't hate it...i merely put up with it. My question is...what direction is nursing going in exactly? A lot of poster have said that they "don't like the direction nursing is going in. I don't personally know of any nurses that work at real hospitals (my aunt works in a psych unit...and my DON works in an office) so...really I'd like some more info about that.
  20. EXACTLY! Same with CNA we were yelled at if we were sitting at the nurse's desk or roaming the halls looking for the CNA that was supposed to instruct us. So we usually just hid in a patient's room or waited for call lights...even then...it was the issue of waiting around (I was mostly on rehab, so people didn't really need more than for me to tell the LPN to give the patient meds)
  21. Even being a Home Health Aide and going to patient's actual homes and spending time with them doesn't warrant making a real personal (true friend) connection with them. I don't make friends with the other employees at the nursing homes and though I'm nice and friendly with the patients, i wouldn't spend time out of my day and family life to make a real personal connection with anybody at work... I know that might seem cold, but it's a job...no matter how much you love it, if you and that patient don't agree about something the patient can turn on you and report you for anything... I just take the advice my mother gave me. "Don't make friends or share in gossip at work, you're bound to make enemies"
  22. Thank you, it's nice to know that i'm not totally different and alone on this course of action and thank you Kylea that makes a lot of sense now
  23. Call it pompus all you like, but that was what i was really planning on doing for a while. That's exactly what I was planning in doing actually. Majoring in psych and then somehow supporting myself while i go beg for jobs before during and after law school. I've been told by lawyer friends that they had to waiter and bus tables while they were searching for jobs just so they could eat, i didn't want to wind up like that. Sorry this might be going into another topic but...if there's such a high demand for nurses why don't the let more people into nursing program rather than making it so competitive? I truly don't understand that. There's a shortage of nurses....buuuut, we aren't going to supply areas with anymore...? Seriously...is it a quality thing?
  24. Why else would i be enrolled in a nursing program? it's not like it's going ot particularly help me out with law at all...even medical law...if i wanted to just be a lawyer right off the bat i'd major in psychology and waste my time being a waitress while i beg for work in a law firm... and yes...i am confused...but i'm pretty positive that i'm going to enroll in the 4 year nursing program after i graduate
  25. Trust me Agrippa, I know what being a lawyer entails...I know of the boredom, research, losing, fighting for clients, kissing ass of everybody you work with, bs politics, etc.... That being said, what I've experienced in the courtroom and behind the scenes has made me fall in love with law entirely. That's why I want to do it. In all honesty I never wanted to be a nurse before I found out that could do a specialty. Now that I know that a degree in nursing can get me into law school I am so incredibly relieved! I know this sounds backward, but right now I don't know if I'd want to go into medical malpractice or anything that involves a nursing degree...I wanted to go into family law...but there's more time for figuring out what field i want to go into when I'm actually in law school...
