  1. Hello Everyone, I have been the school nurse at my school since October. This is my first nursing job. So far I have been enjoying it but there are some moments when I feel overwhelmed. Before I was hired they already went through 3 school nurses. My file cabinet is missing many health files. An other papers I am still sorting out. The school is PS-8th. I have many frequent fliers but have learned to give them tough love. I am having an issue with a group of 5th graders who have asthma coming in together all at lunch time, like its party time, to get their inhalers and breathing txs. Most of the times they come in I question if they really need their inhalers or breathing tx. Does anyone else assess their kids and if their VS are normal send them back to class without? I am a little nervous to refuse an inhaler because if they say they need it and I don't give it and something happens. Any advice is welcomed. Sarah
  2. I don't like how the books are using "client" instead of "patient". I still call them my patient. The word "client" will change the nurse/patient relationship b/c "client" brings to mind $$$ and "patient" makes people think of a sick person that needs your help.
  3. I remember feeling the same way 3/4 way thru my first semester. Just take it one day at a time. You can make it thru! At the end of the semester things will start to click and make sense to you and that helps make it easier. :)
  4. I would say go to the community college. I live in Phoenix and the wait list here at the community college are 1 and a half yrs to 2 yrs. I got in after 1 and a half yrs. I think it's worth the wait b/c you will be saving so much on tuition and the time you are waiting work as much as you can to save money for when you can't work during nursing school.
  5. Thank you to everyone who replied! I do have a great med book. It Saunders but I just want to study up on the meds a little bit so I know the basics.
  6. Hello I am a nursing student here going into my second block and I will be doing clinicals on a med surg floor. I was wondering if anyone can give me an idea of the most common classes of drugs or what meds are most prescribed. I want to study these meds before clinical. Thank you!
  7. Anyone have any awesome clinical day experiences they would like to share? Seems to be alot of negative posts right now and I thought it would be a great reminder of why all of us choose to be nurses!
  8. Hello everyone! :) What is the best way to treat a pinched sciatic nerve? Mine has been pinched sine May 11 and my left foot is still numb! Seems like all the doc does is give me pills and more pill, and I want this problem gone! I don't want to go to clinical with this problem and not to mention the pain! Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
  9. I just finished Block 1 at GCC. My schedule was Monday 8 am-4pm Tuesday and Thursday 8 am-11 am. Wednesdays were 6am-1pm. Now with Block 2 starting soon the schedule is alot more crazy. Mondays and Tuesdays are 6:30am-4 pm, for the first 6 weeks then you go to clinical depending on where your site is it is either monday or tuesday which means the day before have theat whole day clear to write your care plan. If Wednesdays and Thursdays are lec from 8am-10am. If you need more info let me know. :)
  10. I just finished Block 1 Traditional at GCC and I took the review class. I found it extremly helpful b/c the teachers ask you what you (the class as a group) are having trouble with and they will go over it. There are alot of NCLEX questions that are done and I found it very nice b/c they break down the question and exactly how to answer which can be so confusing at times. The teachers also give alot of heads up in that class, for things that are on the test so you know what to study extra on. It depends on what kind of student you are. It pretty much is like a tuoring class. I would recommend taking it for Block 1.
  11. The advice I would give to my fellow nursing students is to DON'T GIVE UP! You have to just keep working on it and thinking about it even though it makes no sense to you at the beginning. When you get frustrated and confused that's good because that means your almost there! One day your teacher will stop sounding like she is talking Greek and you will truly understand it and you will feel so wonderful about yourself! You can do it! Alot of peer support also helped me so much!!
  12. Hey houlihan75, I feel the same way about needing a mind reading class for the teachers! Glad to know I'm not the only one! I just finished my first semester and at the end I started to really understand it all of the sudden. Isn't it awesome?
  13. It seems you have alot of experience with TT. Can you tell me more about your clinical experience with TT?
  14. I was just wondering if anyone has an experience with therapeutic touch in the nursing world? I am doing a group presentation on it and would love to hear experiences or how it is received in the healthcare community.
