Just Say “NO” to Nurse Staffing Laws
I work in Massachusetts and was very disappointed that the safe staffing bill on the November ballot did not pass. 26 million dollars spent on the NO campaign. It was ridiculous. Nurse to patient ratios are a no brainer.

Dealing with a cocky tech?
I have the same issue in the ED I work at. There is one tech that is right there to help with certain things he likes, but if it's something he doesn't like to do, he hides or gets another tech to do it, or pretends he does not hear my request over the walkie talkie. The other day I needed to get a rectal temp on a patient and needed help turning the patient. This tech came in to help, but when we turned her and he saw she was soiled, he left the room and sent another tech in to help clean up the patient. I spoke to management and was told they would talk to him but don't know if they have yet. I let management know that this is not the first time he has avoided a task he does not like and I have seen a pattern. I would keep track of specific things and go to management. Have other workers noticed his behavior?

Trauma Room MEds
We have a pyxis in trauma room with pain meds, aspirin, nitro, Zofran and rsi kit. Any kind of drip someone has to go to other pyxis. Most times there is another nurse to run and grab those meds. It would be nice to have pressors and other drips in the trauma room pyxis. It would save a lot of time running back and forth.

Thick skin missing
No one started out doing something like an expert. There is a learning curve. Don't worry about being a little slower. Focus on doing things right. The timing will come with experience. Don't worry about the comments. You will always run into the over critical know it all. They tend to forget they were new at something at one point.

Union
Yeah they have been coming to the hospital for a few months, giving us information about it, very aggressive, like care salesman. On my way into work some days they would be standing at the front door with a flyer or something to say, etc. It's a closed shop. Not all of the nurses voted, but those that did, 70% voted for the union. The next step is getting union reps, contracts, so it will be a little while before it happens.

Union
The hospital I am working at just went union. I have never worked for a union before. Anyone have any experience with unions?

how to be invisible in nursing
I have found it nearly impossible. I'm the type that likes to go in, do my job, and go home. But sometimes no matter how much you try and avoid the gossip/bs...it has a way of finding you....i just walk away if i hear people start to gossip...dont take the bait

How do you manage hospitalized dementia patients at night?
put them as close to the nursing station as possible. toilet. snack if they want. 1:1, no need for physical or chemical restraints if confused. confused is not combative or agitated. drives me nuts when a nurse just wants to medicate a pt to "keep them quiet"

Is Tramadol part of your Narc count?
I work in a LTC and tramadol was not in the narc count for a while, but then they found a nurse was taking them, so they have since put them in our narc count.

Venting about classmates with families...
I hear ya! I graduated in May and there were people always whining about having to do so much with kids. I myself don't have children. I lived with an 89 year old grandmother with dementia who needed frequent care and a developmentally delayed brother who is epileptic. Just because people don't have "children" doesn't mean they don't have issues.

Saunders 4th Edition
I found the Saunders CD questions easy too and they repeated a lot..so I bought Lippincotts Q + A 9th edition with a CD. The questions are much more like what you'll see on NCLEX. It definetly helped me pass.

Best book to study with
Lippincotts Q & A 9th Edition has tons of questions and a CD. And Saunders COmprehensive 4th Edition is good for content review.

share your experience with SAUNDERS
The Saunders CD isnt that great and it repeats a lot of questions. The book is very good for content review. I'm using that and Lippincott Q & A Ninth Edition. Its got tons of questions that are more challenging than Saunders. Good luck studying!!
