  1. RDH1, I am in the same situation..hygienist now RN. I went to Marsh for my malpractice insurance. They quoted $80 for first year as a new graduate. They will charge for nursing and cover for both. Good luck! Do you like your career shift?
  2. I also tested today and received the "good pop-up". I sure hope it is right!
  3. As a dental hygienist going back to school for my RN degree, I have some background. The decision depends on what you want in the future. As a dentist, they typically have a private practice and deal with all the staffing, payroll, building maintainance plus daily financial goals of the practice. Most dentists do well chairside but have a hard time dealing with staff, and the business side of the practice. It is no picnic. The economy affects the practice. If patients get laid off from their jobs, having their teeth cleaned or proceeding with restorative work is not a priority for most. "No show" patients cost money. Bills still need to be paid. Staff want yearly salary increases to keep up with inflation, however if your practice is not meeting or exceeding financial goals, that will not happen. I hate to say it but "money makes the practice go round". If you want dentistry but hate the business aspect, you might want to think again. I left dentistry because of the economy. All the automotive companies letting so many employees go has reduced the demand for hygienists. It is so sad. I love the interaction with patients so I will graduate next May with my RN and a new way to help patients.
  4. Thank you for all the replies! I am not the type of student to rock the boat and go running to the Dean about her comment. When my classmate suggested reporting her, I just laughed because I did not want to be a target.....she is quite menopausal. I was just angry she commented while I was testing and did not wait until I turned the test in. This is not my first degree. I know how many hoops some programs make you jump through and I am ready. I just thought this was so rude!! Thanks for the support.
  5. While taking our midterm exam, we were given approximately 120 minutes for a 100 question test. I took my time and felt comfortable with my testing speed. If we are given the time, I am not going to rush. I was the last one in the room and 10 minutes before the end of the test, the instructor asked me if I thought I would be able to keep up in the next section of nursing classes because we would have less time for testing. Imagine, I have not even finished my timed test and she is questioning me about my ability. I was so angry, it was very difficult to complete the exam. I mentioned this to a few students and they felt I should contact the head of the program. I just feel it was very poor judgement on her part. Should I be concerned about being the last one done as long as it is with in the allowed time? I have a 3.8 on the 4.0 scale.
  6. Please take care of the infected tooth asap. The infection (decay) can spread to the adjacent teeth and into the sinus area. Something else to consider....when a tooth is removed, the other teeth will shift into the space. This is very important because this will cause many problems later with the bite and jaw pain (TMJ). Please save the teeth you have left. Care Credit has been around for many years and is a reliable way to pay for dental care. Dental schools will do work for low cost however it can be difficult to get an appointment quickly. You might want to consider that for future care. Best of luck!
  7. Go for it! I just started nursing school (ADN)this month @ 53. It was scary to start the pre-reqs but after realizing a lot of the students were going back for second careers, I was not the oldest and really have enjoyed it. If you want it, you will inspire a lot of other people. At first, many thought I was nuts, but that was ok. Now I have quite a large cheering section! Even my grandson knows I go to school! Follow your heart :heartbeat you will not regret it!!
  8. mybrowneyedgirl, Guess I'm confused, Veteran's Hospital will not hire a grad that is not from a "NLNAC" accredited program. I looked at the listed and did not see the University of Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Madonna University, UD Mercy and many more. So all those grads are excluded from working at the Vets Hospital? That sounds crazy....just what is special about the "NLNAC"?
  9. Michigan RN, Congrats on going back for BSN! I am starting NS this fall with plans to continue for BSN @ OU or Eastern as soon as I graduate. What Chemistry and Micro classes do you need? I have taken several extra classes while waiting to get into the program and I hope they will transfer. Is there a website that lists the classes for the RN-BSN @ OU? Did you check out Eastern's BSN program? Did you choose OU because it was online? Is is difficult to get accepted to the BSN program? Thanks!
  10. adpeeka, I have Mrs. Palmer. Heard they were all good. Who do you have? I just finished Organic/Bio Chem today and my brain is fried! Can't think about starting for a little bit!! Good luck to you!!
  11. Go for your dream! Remember Baker is not the only school. I looked into Baker and did not feel I was getting honest answers to my questions so I applied elsewhere. I was accepted at two other schools. My daughter had many problems with Baker College not giving her correct information with regards to her program. Follow your heart.:heartbeat
  12. I start the nursing program @ Schoolcraft next month!! I am excited! Met lots of nice students at the open house and toured the new building.
  13. I had a hysterectomy due to "possible" adenomyosis which was confirmed when it was biopsied. The monthly periods were extremely heavy. Adenomyosis was suspected but could not be confirmed until it was removed. Abation or hysterectomy were my options. I was miserable for a very long time. I was told the symptoms are very similar to endometriosis.
  14. :yeah:Congrats!! It is so hard to make the decision to go back. Then to walk through those doors again can be terrifying!! Then you get over it!! I finished my pre-reqs and will start nursing this fall. I worked as a dental hygienist for 30+ years and made the decision to shake up my life. My kids thought I was crazy but supported my decision and my husband has been my rock. It is amazing how many "non-traditional"(that means old ) students are attending class. I have met so many fun people each semester! Just have a positive attitude, realize we do not learn as fast as the young ones however most of us are not running around to the bars at night either. I had a big burly jock come to me for chemistry help.....talk about ego! Best of luck to all!! Oh, by the way....got you all beat....I'm 53....and a Grandma!!
  15. The instructor yesterday was O'Connor and she will team teach with Donbronsky. Does anyone have any advice?:uhoh21:
