Is there anyone attending santa monica college
I would call SMC and ask them what they suggest. Tell them that SMC is your first choice but do they advise that you get a head start at LACC and then transfere to SMC's nursing. I'm assuming your grades during that time would have to be decent , but then again, if you have GE classes you need to finish, I suggest doing that and waiting for SMC in the Spring. I know that some nursing programs will not accept someone that "failed" a class in another nursing program. Also, I didn't think about this before but it might be a little unfair to take another students spot at LACC if you end up dropping out of the program after a semester. The best thing is to call a counselor at SMC and discuss the best case scenerio for you. I don't want to give your wrong advice. Good Luck!!!:)

Does your school allow you to record lectures (audio)
We were not allowed to record lectures for our prerequisites, however some professors were ok with it. In the nursing program, I was told that we could record but need to sign a disclaimer not to re-post or give copies of the lecture to anyone and that it is only for our own individual purposes.

I too applied to LA County for Fall but my first choice was SMC because it a lot closer to me. I heard that LA County was good, but since I am in at SMC for this Fall, I will decline County "IF" I even get accepted that is. I haven't heard anything bad or good about LACC. I only know of a girl that applied their but hasn't even taken the entrance exam yet, so she has no info. I am sure it is good too. I would call and talk to a counselor at SMC to see where you are on the waitlist. You should try to stay in contact with them every few months. Also, if you don't end up liking where you go this Fall, maybe you can switch to SMC in the Spring, so don't take your name of their waitlist. Good luck!

Hi I applied in March last year. so one semester before you did. I did get in this Fall, so I waited the usual 3 semesters that I was told by the counselor when I put in my application. It worked out best for me since I wanted to finish as many G.E. classes before starting the program. You get about a month notice to take the NLN. They send you an e-mail and you register for the date you want to take the exam. So you can either take it right away or wait until the last date(usually 30 days) availbale if you want more time to study. I took mine second to last day. You take the test on the computer so you get your results right away, which is great. They will also e-mail you about Plato roughly 3-4 months before you register for the exam. The NLN book was very helpful for me, mainly to time myself. That's the only study guide that the testing company offers. You may want to talk to one of the Nursing Counselors (they are really nice and helpful) incase they have made any changes to their procedures. Don't stress about the test, just start preparing in advance an you'll do fine.

I just took the NLN exam last week. Thank god I passed!. The one thing I can tell you is practice time management especially on the Math part. They are pretty much easy questions but you have to be able to know how to calculate them instantly. If you get stuck on one, move on to the next and then come back to it. The science was basic, but has more physics than Anatomy or Physiology, which I thought was odd. My suggestion is to get the NLN review guide and practice timing yourself. Also SMC has a thing called "Plato", I found that helpful for the physics part of the exam. My friend who just started the program in Spring took both the NLN and TEAS and said that the NLN was harder, but no that much more. Good luck!!!

Santa Monica College ADN Schedule
Hi I'm on the waitlist. I applied in March 2009 and was told I would start (if I pass the NLN in April 2010) in Fall 2010, which would be a 3 semester wait list (Spring, Fall, Spring). However I just got an e-mail Friday to take the exam in November for possible Spring 2010 entrance. I heard that it was because a lot of students didn't pass the NLN. Yikes!!!

How to make studying unboring?
I ordered it on-line. It's called Interactive Physiology 9 system suite or Anatomy, by Pearson/Benjamin Cummings. It includes Cardiovascular, Muscular, Nervous, Respiratory, urinary, Endocrine and Digestive systems along with Fluids, Electrolytes and Acid/Base balance.

How to make studying unboring?
I got an "Interactive" DVD for my Anatomy and Physiology class. It helpd me understand the processes because it showed me how they worked, broke it all down as opposed to just reading about it and I had to participate ( the interactive part). By understanding more, I became more interested in the classes and got A's. Maybe there's an interactive Biology DVD or website.

Phlebotomists
go to this site ( http://www.azdhs.gov/phs/ ) and call them and ask them where you can get the list of their approved phlebotomy training schools. i looked and couldn't find it either. maybe arizona has it on a different site than california.

Phlebotomists
Hi In California there is a list of state approved Phlebotomy schools. You have to make sure they are state approved for you can get your state certification. You should check the list for Arizona or call the Department of Health Services in Arizona and ask them for the list. I just signed up for one that starts this Monday and it's Monday-Thursday for a month, then you take your state exam within 1 week of completion, then they place you in a 40 hour externship program.

CNA or Phlebotomist...or both?
Hi JumpingIn How does it feel to do your first blood draw? Were you confident from the get go or were you nervous.

I took Professor Hill. It was a Saturday class from 9 - 3:30 with a 45 minute lunch break. I wouldn't recommed that particular class because it's too much all in one day, then you didn't have any communication with the professor for a whole week. So if you had questions you'd have to wait. It's better to take a class that twice a week for about 2-3 hours per class. I heard that Professor Geisbauer is good. I took her for Physiology not anatomy though.

I cannot STAND working in lab student discrimination!
"i am a nice person, quiet, humble and I do not bother ANYBODY" Some people may take you being quiet as you not wanting to be there or that you are too good to speak them. Trust me I've been there. I used to be very quiet and people assumed the worst of me because I didn't give them the opportunity to know who I am. That said, life's too short to be concerened by a few people being Jerks to you. I say you try smiling and saying hi a few times and if you get the same attitude then screw them. You'll never have to see them again after this class. You are focusing so much of your time and energy on them that you may end up missing out on learning what you need to in the class-which will only interfere with your learning or your grade. I agree though, that you should try and get there early if not on time. Good luck and keep your focus on your ultimate goa...being a NURSE:wink2:

Microbiology - Fall 2008
Four main functions are carried out on a bacterial plasma membrane: 1) transport, 2) biosynthesis, 3) signaling and 4) the production and use of energy. I don't have my notes with me but this is what I read and I will double check later.

Microbiology - Fall 2008
I agree with the other poster. Recorder, recorder, recorder. Can't say enough about it. I can focus more on what the professor is saying than trying to write down everything and maybe miss something becuase his lectures are so fast. In addition since I'm an "audio" person as opposed to a "reading" person, I can always go back and listen to something I missed or don't understand. Also flash cards! I make them based on the lectures and keep them in my purse, so if I'm anywhere that I have 10 minutes, instead of doing nothing I pull them out and review them. Usually by the end of a class I have hundreds of flash cards (2 whole punching and using rings makes them easier to carry around).

TEAS Versus NLN entrance exams
Hi O.K. so I ordered the TEAS study guide and got it last month and have been reviewing it occationally until it's time for me to take the test. HOWEVER, the nursing department said they just changed the entrance exam from the TEAS to the "NLN entrance exam". My question is-does anyone know if this NLN exam is more difficult, Same or Easier than the TEAS??? I was already nervous about this darn TEAS exam to begin with and now they go a switch it on me. Please let me know Thanks

Microbiology - Fall 2008
We haven't done our own slides but yesterday we did do some cultures. I too am working with E.Coli and Staph to name a few but I put on disposbale gloves. I also got to swab $1 bill that I had in my wallet. Will get to review the results on Teusday. hopefully it won't show anything too distgusting but money does go through millions of hands Yuck!!!. I lucked out that our professor seems great so far and we got all books a lab manual on the first day.

Keep current job or find something in health care field?
I agree. Keep your current job and volunteer for atleast 6 mos. in the Health Care industry (if you can handle staying at your job that long). I applied to volunteer at a hospital near by and since I was studying in the Nursing field, they put me in the E.R. unit. I'm getting so much hands on experince and interact with nurses daily. I even have Doctors or Nurses asking for help with a patient sometimes, so I've seen alot. That way if you finally decide to take a lower paying job in the healthcare field, you can put that on your resume and maybe qualify for a higher paying position. Another fast tepping stone is to maybe get your Phlebotomy License (takes about 6 weeks on avg.) and once you take the state exam and pass, you can work in Doctors office or hospitals-however that too doesn't pay much. Hope I didn't confuse you more.:wink2:

Flashcards for Micro
I prefer to write my own-the more I personally write things down the more I remember. Our professor already posted his Micro syllabus and on there it has our textbook website which already have online flash cards. I will probably review those too in addition to mine. just depends on what's worked for you in the past. Good Luck

Micro Heads Up!
Hi ThatPoshGirl How is the sound quality of the Pulse Smart Pen. Is it the same as a regular recorder or do you need to sit up front for it to record the profesor clearly. I've never heard of it until your post. I'm used to using my regular recorder . Thanks
