Passed NCLEX 75 Questions - Study Tips / Schedule
I took nclex today and while I do not know if I passed yet I got the good pearson vue pop up and it shut off with 75 questions. Kaplan looked just like nclex!!!! I have been working as a GN on a labor and delivery floor and wasn't able to finish q trainer 7 and the readiness test. But I took the other trainers and scored between 55-63% I also did some q bank test. When I got to the test today I felt like ok I can do this because this is exactly like what I have been practicing (if not a little easier) Kaplan I think really eases your anxiety.

SSM Futures - An Overview
Just thought I would give a little update... This past week was my first week and we did epic training and other basic power point class learning. Pretty similar to what you described. Next week is my first week on the floor and I was placed at... ST. CLARE LABOR AND DELIVERY! Can you tell I'm one ecstatic happy new grad nurse!? I actually am the only one from futures in labor and deliver (from what I know). Not sure how I managed that. There are several in mother baby at St. Mary's and St. Joes-St. Charles. The way St. Clare is set up is that moms deliver and remain in the same room their entire stay (unless there is a problem of course). I'm really hoping to be able to stay after the first 6 weeks. I loved the staff that are helping us go through this process. I haven't come across anyone who wasn't friendly. I'm excited to begin this journey!

Working with student nurses
Ok maybe with the down fall of the economy currently there is not as much of a shortage. I am from an area where many hospitals always have RN openings. I already have a job prior to graduation. But according to my management text which is based on the research, a study by the US Health Resources and Services Administration suggests that by one million new nurses will be needed by 2020 and that all 50 states will experience a nursing shortage of some degree by 2015. If there wasn't a nursing shortage none of my fellow graduates would even have jobs, because I would think hospitals would rather hire experienced nurses. I guess I really can't speak for the entire US but my opinion is that nursing really is the only degree where your prospectives of obtaining a job are much hire than other degrees.

Working with student nurses
Looking back through this thread surprises me how many nurses state that teaching students is not "part of their job" come on now, there is a nursing shortage and we all might need someone to care for us one day. I'd rather teach a student as much as I can. Maybe that's also because I am graduating in 5 days and from the nurses I worked with I tried to learn as much as I can!

SSM Futures - An Overview
Yeah, I will keep you guys updated but they must have decided to run another class of futures in January for us December grads. I'm not sure if people were unhappy with placement and left when they didn't get the area they wanted so they changed their process.. I'm not sure. Also the not knowing which hospital thing is difficult. Do you stay at one hospital for the orientation and then you are placed anywhere? I'm in a pretty central location, but would love to work for St. Clare! Oh and I wanted to second the getting a tech job recommendation, I have worked for 2 years at a bjc hospital and feel it has definitely helped me. Also I recommend keeping your GPA at a 3.0 many internships require a 3.0 minimum GPA, just thought I'd throw that out there. Can't wait to be a nurse! Thanks for the info on futures!

SSM Futures - An Overview
I am starting the futures program January 16th so I guess they aren't just doing it twice a year. I graduate December 17th. I completed the phone interview and then I interviewed for an OB position. They had separate interviews for different specialties. You could interview for ICU, ER, Peds, OB etc and they would be all separate interviews. When I was called an offered the position I was informed that I would be guaranteed an OB position so I really hope that I am not placed on a med surge floor. Not that I don't appreciate having a job, but I am leaving BJC so that I can get into this specialty. I'm not sure though if I should order the scrubs yet because I know many OB floors wear surgical scrubs. I am excited to be apart of this program because I have heard good things about SSM.

Working with student nurses
I'm a student nurse about to graduate in December! Anyways I know there are some girls in my clinical group that have that I-know-everything attitude. One girl in my group said the tech told her that the patient really needed a bath and she replied, "oh yeah when are you going to do that". She told me she was not letting the tech get out of doing her job. I thought her response was crazy especially since we only have 1-2 patients at that time. I try to be as considerate as possible when I'm in clinical. I want to learn anything I can and even if a nurse is telling me something I might already know I just listen anyway!

Excessive smoke breaks
Most people I work with do not smoke. You may not want to make it awkward by confronting this CNA but patient safety and care is being compromised. It's just that not only is it not fair for the none smokers to have to pick up the slack when they are out on break the main reason of why it's wrong is because it's not safe for patients. You would report someone else if they were sitting in the break room during a code so why not report excessive breaks. I also think that instead of counting all the times they are gone you should discuss the problem with the CNA yourself because ultimately it is the RNs license on the line. If talking to them about it doesn't help then go to your superior.

Should boyfriend help me out?
ok. I dont think he should have to help you out but if he is offering then I would except. I have been with my boyfriend for 3 and a half years and have not been working just focusing on school full time. I look at it like this, we plan on getting married after i am done with school and any way he helps me out financially now will help us both when im out of school and we decide to have a family. I say take what you need. Don't feel bad because if he loves you and has the money then i wouldnt worry about it. Then again i am 'one of those girls' i guess. I do love him very much though and do not abuse it. He has a good job and is older.

is the advisor right?
I am going to be starting the nursing program next year. My friends who I plan on living with also got in. Today at lunch one of the girls who has been struggling with Anatomy and Physiology 1 was talking to the adviser about retaking the class in the summer since she is not receiving a passing grade. He told her that she will not be cut out for nursing if she can not pass this class. She studies all the time and is trying really hard to pass this class and is not failing because of lack of effort. I am taking A & P in the summer (I couldn't take it this semester) and have no way to help her. It also worries me because I'm afraid I am not going to be able to pass. So my question is does failing a class really mean you are not cut out to be a nurse or pass nursing school? Thanks, Jess

Anyone taking AP I in the summer?
yes i am taking A&P 1 this summer and Microbiology. umm yeah this should be interesting. I think though since I HAVE to (at least) pass that is more motivation. good luck everyone

Comfort
he does sound like a typical 'guy'. It won't last long I'm sure he will break down eventually and I think you will be the one he will cry too and then after a while you can start to talk about good memories. that kind of helps. my boyfriend's grandpa died a while ago and he would hold in his feelings and then out of no where we would go to see a movie weeks later and he just broke down. My boyfriend never cries. I think guys don't want us girls to think they are weak. Let him know its ok to be vulnerable. When my grandpa died (i know that i am a girl and feelings are handled differently) all I wanted to do was cry and have him hold me. and he may say 'every' thing is fine for a while because it may not seem like reality yet. It really sounds like he's lucky to have you. Let him know he will always have you. I feel for you its hard to relate when you have know idea. hope this helps. any other questions id be happy to help.

Comfort
I am sorry to hear about that news but really there is not much you can do except just be there for him. I know sometimes men think they need to hold in their feelings and not cry but I'm sure he is hurting. All I can say is just be his shoulder try to be strong but don't blame yourself or beat yourself up over this. Show him that he has you and you love him. I honestly think that you should say anything except tell him you are there for him and listen to him. Don't try to find the right words to say because there really aren't any and take care of yourself too. Jess
