  1. No problem and GOOD LUCK!
  2. See www.onenurseatatime.org for information regarding groups going to Haiti and possible scholorships to help defray your personal costs.
  3. Maybe later in the 'reguilding phase. As a WHCNP I don't feel qualified to work during this 'disaster phase." For those who ARE going fcheck out One Nurse at a Time www.onenurseatatime.org for a possible scholorship!
  4. Can you take some time off work? If so, consider volunteering for Casa de Los Angeles in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. It's a lovely daycare/clinic and so much more and a very non-threatening place to practice your Spanish. also, see www.onenurseatatime.org for a possible scholorship! Good luck! the life you change WILL be your own.
  5. I just finished Joe Niemczura's book, "The Hospital at the End of the World," and want to recommend it. It is a particularly wonderful read for nurses and nursing students and others in the field of healthcare. If you haven't considered international nursing before, this book will inspire you to consider it! Niemczura'...s book is the story of transition and of his spiritual and professional journey. I found it to be a heartfelt, honest depiction of what nursing in Nepal -- 'out of the bubble' -- is truly like. Niemczura portrays the medical and nursing staff of the Tansen hospital as compassionate, competent and knowledgeable, however, throughout the book the reader becomes acutely aware of the scarcity of resources available for the medical practice in less developed countries when compared to Western societies. I hope that many nurses and nursing students will pick up a copy and be inspired to go out into the world and practice the art and the science of nursing outside their home countries. The life you change WILL be your own!
  6. chenoaspirit - Thanks for the kudos! I hope you mean that your life has changed in a good way. If you'd like to 'talk' more privately just sent me a private message.
  7. Rachael - I'm happy to hear tht my rambling made sense. I'm sure your cyst will resolve on it's own with the oral contraceptives. follicular cysts nearly always do.
  8. Check into "bridge' programs that take you right from BSN to NP - usually in about 2-3 years if you already have a degree. Good luck!
  9. Quitogirl. I would love to discuss your experiences (and stories about) in Ecuador, i look forward to learning more about yor work in an 'other america." thanks! ~ Womankind
  10. How about requesting a meeting with your charge nurse and telling her exactly what you just told us. IT would likely 'clear the air.' You probably are coming back from your breaks smelling so 'santized'tht it draws suspicion. Not that I blame you for feeling offended. She was out of line and should have confronted you directly if she truly had concerns, however, as you said , you have to work with her. Might as well try using honey- not vinegar. goodluck!
  11. I had no idea that I wanted to be a nurse, much less a Public Health Nurse, since I thought all they did was immunize children. The idea of spending my days making small children cry wasn't exactly a turn on. No, I wanted to be a Social Worker - that way I'd spend my days helping families improve their lives, working mostly with single mothers and caring for folks emotional needs - helping them along the way to whole health. Then, an excellent college counselor arranged for me to spend a day with a Public Health Nurse. We visited an abandoned hotel to take Tb meds to a homeless man, visited two families with special needs children and provided mostly just emotional support and resources, and we visited two high-risk teenage pregnant clients, one whose BP was 180/110! We promptly notified her Md and within 30 minutes had her in the hospital. Voila! I learned that day that what I wanted to be 'when I grew up" was a NURSE. Thank goodness for that counselor who truly went 'an extra kilometer' for me. I feel badly that I can't remember his name. I've never had a single regret regarding my career choice and have practiced nursing all over the world. NURSE RULE! And that's MY story that I'm going to stick to. What's yours?
