Proud Part-Time Baby Sitter
I have a 9 year old daughter who receives nursing care, I’m an RN as well mind you. Our daughter has a trach, LTV vent, straight cath twice a day, gtube, nebulizer, CPT vest, mist collar when sprinting, o2 with pulse oximetry monitors, AFOs, hip splint at times, stoma and wound care as needed. Tons of deep suctioning, frequent trach changes. She is nonverbal and requires an augmented communication device, as well as a wheelchair. Total care with all ADLs. Plus of course all her meds. She’s had a PICC with IV antibiotics a few times as well s/p some surgeries. Our nurses do her laundry and put away her supplies. We do not have 24 hour care though. Lots of skills. Some cases are baby sitting, some are more complex than a PICU. It’s definitely about how you fit with the family too since you start to become a member. Love my nurses and have loved the other kiddos and family I worked with myself.

Is my (50K) BSN worthless?
Community College may have continuing Ed classes that could help you gain skills. BTW I am very disappointed for you about your school’s utter lack of clinical preparation. You paid for an education that should have prepared you to hit the ground running. Too bad they were only looking at the NCLEX score instead of the RN job you needed to be prepared to do.

Whats the normal intake and output for a 5 wk old?
Well your ratio is acceptable... although at 9 1/2 lbs? No way would 2 oz in 10 hours be enough... do you mean 4.42lbs? Then yes that would be ok.

Tips for a new lpn a a LTC Facility
Do not be too hard on yourself... as you learn the patients and the meds you will get faster. The important thing is to get it right.I was an LPN in LTC and had 30 residents with two main med passes and 1 small med pass, along with the dinner meal to supervise and the treatments to do.You'll learn your routine of who is quick, who to do first, etc as you go. It is not uncommon for the times your are talking about. You won't believe it but you will actually memorize who gets what at each pass and you'll speed through these med passes with time.

Whats the normal intake and output for a 5 wk old?
Depends on the size (weight) of the 5 week old. Is this a typical child, a premie, or micro premie? Was this for 24h or just the time you were there? How long was your shift?

Stuck because of videos
Oh thank God I thought we had to do the whole thing by memory like we did first semester in Nursing School! LOL Ok so two weeks of a break between old job and new job and I will knock this out. Then I can move onto my last three classes Stats and Community Health (now that the ATI test can be proctored) and then it's onto the MSN portion! Does anyone know which three classes are the three that = the BSN degree completion?

How did you guys make the choice to become nurses?
My computer is special... apparently it hasn't gotten that concept, because I do :-( My toys when I was a kid= dolls and things I could fabricate into syringes, bandages, and IV equipment. It took me awhile to gain the confidence and get over my math phobia to actually get up the courage to apply for nursing school but, it never stopped being, "What I wanted to be when I grew up."

Stuck because of videos
I was going along like gangbusters in this program and loving it. Then LUT 1 (Communications) and the record yourself portion and write a script, followed by the C349 (Health Assessment) record yourself portion. The rest of it DONE.... why on earth am I having issues with this? Because I have a phobia of the camera ? Dumb and dumber.... anyone else have issues with this? (Mind you at this point I have completed 15 CU since Oct 1 so I am not behind at least)

How long do you wait from graduating nursing school to further your education?
Depends on if you already have a job? If you do wait at least a year because you will need all of the brain power to learn everything you need to know to transition from student to actually being a working nurse. If not working, start taking classes right away, because you are in student mode still and will be pleased with the easier pace of BSN classes, yet you'll be more marketable as a New Grad in a BSN program or once you complete it.I went back after a break, I was working while in school from LPN to RN. I am starting my first acute care hospital position since graduating in 2012 and I will tell you that I do not plan on doing much school work while training for this position.

moving to Phoenix az
There is at this time a more than two year waiting period for the RN programs at the Community Colleges in Phoenix. After you complete the list of pre and co required courses you can apply to get on that list.Right now the market is saturated with New Grads and everywhere is BSN required, especially if you want to get into the Hospitals. There are also numerous University BSN programs that admit RN students and those who have also partnered with the Community Colleges. They have their own pre and co required courses and are more competitive to get into.Additionally, there are also the for profit programs that run up over 40k-60k for an Associates Degree with no wait, yet again the job market is pretty tight so coming out of those programs with a job is rare.

Just starting my new job in a Cardiovascular Care Unit!
Congrats to you! I just accepted a position in a Cardiac Care Unit and am pretty excited and freaked out. My orientation starts Dec 8th.My career has progressed from LPN working LTC to Peds Homecare, then RN at an Urgent Care. Just goes to show that with hard work and drive we can always continue our growth in this wonderfully crazy profession.

Relocating to Phoenix
$20-26 depending on shifts... some maybe lower than others depending on where you work. I worked LTC and Homehealth and the least I made was $24 I did the LPN-RN program through the Community College in Phoenix. Now i am working on my RN-MSN online and about to start an ER position.

LPN?
Not really actually... if you are applying to a program in the traditional route an LPN will not help you because you'd be at a different level... but prior medical experience sometimes gives you a leg up in an application process from being a CNA... as long as it's not required that all students have their CNA prior to application like some programs require. A high GPA and a medical background matters more in those placed by huge application pool selection process vs those placed from a waiting list, which only requires you to complete the pre-reqs and wait until your time stamp is called.

LPN?
My LPN gave me a huge leg up to getting into the RN program because they allow an advanced placement application and I did not have to sit and wait on a two year long waiting list... for example... our RN program was 4 Blocks... I was able to bypass Block 1&2 in the RN program because I had already completed those topics in the LPN program. MA to RN is harder because they don't cover the same topics... but LPN to RN is an easy transition :-) Good luck!

Just got a job interview in ambulatory care! Need advice!
Not sure about the rate because that actually depends on the area. But in a Primary care office you will be doing a lot of preventative health, community outreach(mainly your patient base) and disease prevention. Not to mention, lots of script refills and prior authorizations for procedures. There is a lot of coding and front office language that you will learn.Great skills for someone who wants to do Community Health as a future FNP

I want to quit 4 months in
5 night shifts in a row is very hard and you are not lazy or anything for not wanting to do this. It's not a natural shift and not everyone can actually physically do it. Infact it makes some people physically sick. There are always other shifts and other employers will understand. 3 shifts are hard enough.
-
best i quit or fired story
Story where I work and it was right before me... Nurse Manager was being fired and walked out of the building... as she was leaving she lunged for a nurse sitting at the nurses station and started choking her. No one was sure why it happened, but she threw a few not so nice words out at the nurse she was choking so maybe she thought that was the nurse that got her fired... wish I had seen it though.

entrance assessment test
You don't have to do it if you have an RN it won't come off the main screen until after your semester starts

12 CUs in 30 days Done
So far I have completed 12 CUs, so technically the required semester in 30 days. I am in the RN to MSN program and had a few extra General Eds to completed as well. Mostly they were not hard, just tedious. I have completed: Applications in US and World History GKT1 Themes in US and World History GKE1 Literature Arts & the Humanities IWC 1 Literature, Arts, & the Humanities: Analysis and Interpretation IWT1 Biochemistry GRT1 Care of the Older Adult DPV1 My goal is to complete another 11 CUs from now until December: Nutrition for Contemporary Society CSC1 Language and Communication Presentation LUT1 Introduction to Probability and Statistics CJC1 Health Assessment C349 If I finish those I may get to at least one of the Community Health courses completed prior to my first semester ending February 28th ... Here's hoping!
