definitely not black! Wear white and if you can find a nude or tan, go with that. White should be fine though. Our uniforms are all white too (and the pants are easy to see through when you bend over!).. when i first started school, the professors made a big point of telling us NO colored undies or thongs and that if we wore them we would be sent home! haha

Hi all, I've been reading here for awhile now and there seems to be a reoccuring theme.. that the first year or two is incredibly crazy and in some cases hellish. I'm curious, what exactly makes it so hard the first year??? I know that it is adjustment to a new career.. I imagine the organization and workload are very trying... But it seems as though many people want to quit or question their decision to be a nurse in the first year. I am still in nursing school... 2 more semesters to go and i'm very excited! However, I anticipate that I may have a really hard time in the beginning. Any insight??? Thank you! :)

:yeahthat: YES! I AGREE WITH EVERYTHING.. Besides that I haven't had any children yet, I feel exactly the same way. I'm just about positive that I will have my babies at home with a midwife and a birthing pool. I've just read tooooo many horror stories. I can't say that I've heard ANY good hospital birthing stories... So now my dilema is L&D nursing, where I just dont think I would do well watching all the "unnecessary" interventions, or Midwifery. I'm thinkin' the latter but who knows.:)

You sound like a great teacher :nuke: I find the "my member doesn't look like daddy's" reasoning for circumcision so frustrating. I personally don't think it's that difficult to explain, but I know that this is a big reason why many parents choose to circ their sons. My boyfriend isn't circumcised, but his father is and they have both said that it was never an issue

Wow, this thread is so so sad to me Why can't women just go into labor when their bodies say so?? And it is sooo true, everyone is just in such a rush... I can't imagine that those dr's would want to have their children that way.

blueridge, you are very right.. i apologize for being so dismissive in my post. i do feel circumcision is unnecessary, painful and a bit barbaric, but.. that does not discredit any data that may have been found in regards to hiv. however, i have to say that it still seems a bit silly to me that having a foreskin alone could increase the rate of hiv. i do understand your point about the foreskin trapping fluid though. impo, i believe that increased hiv transmission has to do with behavior, not circumcision. however, i will not dismiss the data just because of how i feel about the situation and that there may be other factors involved. thank you for pointing that out to me :)

This is a post from another group I belong to. I was pretty sure that I was against circumcision, but after reading this and watching the video.. I know that if a doctor ever even came near my son with something like this, i'd knock him out. It made me sick to my stomach. Has it occurred to anyone that the countries that circumcise their children more often also have more money, education and access to prophylactics.. and that THAT could be the reason HIV is less prevalent???? I mean, come on... a foreskin is NOT going to increase the probability of getting HIV. That is absolutely ridiculous! It's a piece of skin, that's SUPPOSED to be there. HIV is transmitted through bodily fluids, not foreskins, hahah.

HappyNurse2005, you sound like a great nurse :) Your hospital also sounds great and very welcoming to natural births. I am not a nurse quite yet, but i'm in my second semester of nursing school and I really think that I want to be a CNM. I have considered working as an L&D nurse, but I've read so much about all the hospital procedures, protocals and the managed births, that i'm just not sure I could. I strongly believe that birth is a natural and normal process and that women's bodies are designed for it! Our bodies are so smart and I think some people forget that.. The scariest thing for me is the poor women who go into the hospital low-risk and wanting a natural birth, but before they know it, they are confined to bed and having EFM, IVs, Pitocin, amniotomy and maybe even a c-section... it seems that women end up getting wrapped up in what everyone is telling them they should do, and their wishes get sidelined. Of course I understand that there are situations where things like C-sections are necessary (I was a C-section myself.. my mother's pelvis was much too small, as indicated by the depressed ring on my head when i was born and my decreasing HR) so I am certainly SO glad that they are available in emergencies. I also believe that women should be able to labor and give birth however they want, it just seems that in many hospitals, they arn't given those options. That being said, i think i would have a hard time working in a hospital that really pushes the interventions. If a woman wants them, that's one thing... but they shouldn't be pushed or treated any differently if they want a truley natural birth. Wow I rambled a bit, haha... I 'm so sorry if that sounded preachy.. it's just something that I feel strongly about :)

How old is your friend? Do you know if there is any family history of mental illness??

I have not personally experienced any patients with this, nor have I had a NDE... However, I do know that my grandfather was calling out to his wife and others the day before his death. He appeared to die very peacefully. People will choose to believe or not believe, and their feelings regarding their beliefs may very well change with time. I do not think that just because something isnt "scientifically proven" that it does not exist. I think that there are just soooo many things that we as human beings just dont have the capacity to understand yet.. maybe where we go when we die, if anywhere, is just one of those things. IMO, the most important thing is that whatever these people saw (angels, relatives, hallucinations due to epinepherine) helped them through their experience. Of course I have no idea what will happen to me when i go, but I choose to believe that there IS somethine after death and I hope that my loved ones will come for me and that I will go to a place where I feel comfort and love and peacefullness. I may be completely wrong, but I dont care, because it makes me feel good :nuke:

If you haven't already, you guys should read the book "PUSHED." It's really great, but infuriating! It talks about this exact issue and how women are now laboring in the parking lots of hospitals until the baby is in the birth canal, in order to avoid c-sections, and how MDs are scheduling c-sections because it's convenient for them and they dont want to "waste their time" waiting for women to go through the stages of labor. Oooh! It makes me so mad!!!!! :angryfire

Hello everyone :) I am currently in nursing school, and I am very interested in becoming a midwife someday... I really want to be involved in natural, physiological births.. I think the stages of labor are fascinating as well as the body's ability to do such an incredible thing. I understand that C-Sections are often very necessary and I am thankful that we have the technology to do such things (my mother had too small of a pelvis, and neither she nor I would exist if not for the c-section, haha). However, I have done some reading and it seems that hospitals aren't really the place to see births without the intervention of water-breaking, pitocin, cervical dialators, epidurals, c-sections, etc... Anyway, i guess my question.. is anyone here a CNM or L&D nurse that has an opinion on this?? Is becoming a CNM worth it?? Are there home births or birth centers involved or are they mostly in hospitals?? Sorry about the legnth! Thank you in advance for any info

Hey guys... I am interested in becoming a CNM after I get out of school, and I'm having difficulty finding any good info about it. I have heard that you need a masters in nursing, but I don't know much else. Is anyone here a Certified Midwife?? or does anyone know anything about becoming one?? Thanks so much!

I actually have a boyfriend right now and I'm in nursing school. It is definitely workable.. You just have to find the right man who would understand that you have minimal free time. I am lucky because my boyfriend and I have been together 3 years and now live together.. So even though I work full time and go to school at night, we are able to have at least a few hours together, even if it means laying in bed at night. I am also very lucky because we both understood what it meant when I started the program.. we just have to be patient and be together as much as we can when i'm not studying. It also means that he has to pick up the slack where i cant.. dinner, laundry, etc. But as for starting a NEW relationship.. it might be really difficult, especially since in the beginning of a relationship you want to spend ALLL of your time together. I agree with other posters in that, if you find a guy you cant live without and he is patient and understanding, then go for it :redbeathe:) Otherwise, just wait a little longer, at least until you get into the swing of things.. Don't worry you'll be done soon!

Hi all :) I am curious as to what everyone's personal motivation was to origionally become a nurse? I am a nursing student and I think that there are some people in my class that are strictly interested in the pay.. but I really just want to work with people, comfort them, help them feel better, etc. So, I'm just curious.. why did all of you become nurses? Why do you continue even when some days can be really hard? :)

Hi everyone :) I am required to get all-white nursing shoes for the nursing program at my school.. However, I have very flat and narrow feet, and despite having custom-made orthotics, I still have trouble with a lot of shoes making my knees, hips and lower back hurt. We're not allowed to wear clogs, heels or sneakers for the program.. (my feet are narrow enough that clogs dont really stay on my feet anyway, haha) So does anyone have any good ideas for shoes that are comfy all day long?? I was looking at some of the ones Merrell makes because i know they make other quality shoes. Thank you so much in advance for your help or input!! I appreciate it immensly!!
