I don't mean to offend you, but this does sound like it's ALL about you. Needle sticks/blood splashes/exposure to disease can occur in any setting, not just the ED or OR. Sometimes they cannot be avoided, but we are taught to protect ourselves the best we can. There is a risk factor that goes along with this profession just as with being a police officer or a fireman. If your fiancee feels that nursing is right for her then why not try to be more supportive of her aspirations? I agree that marriage in itself can be tough, but it's a partnership where sometimes you have to make sacrifices for each other.

Contact the nurse aide registry in your home state (It's located at the Dept. of Public Health) and request an Application for Enrollment By Reciprocity. This means that you are asking the new state to recognize the approval you received from your home state. Make sure you ask them if you should send the completed form to them or to the state to which you are moving. You may be able to fax your request directly to the state you are moving to rather than to your home state. Also ask what items you will need copies of to fax or mail such as driver's license, social security card, current certification etc.

They had no business putting you in a float position with only three days orientation no less. Float is usually reserved for employees with prior experience. I would resign as well. Staying isn't going to make the situation any better. You'd most likely burn out inside of 6 months. You are a nursing student correct? Have you considered applying for a nurse tech position at a hospital? It's a great way to gain clinical experience. Best of luck!

If the state is against you administering medications then I do not see the issue here. You cannot be made to administer meds if you were not trained in that capacity, and it's unfair for the chief to even suggest it. I am confused on one issue though. The county jail standard for Indiana states that any jail officer who administers meds must be trained by the responsible physician and jail administrator. Do you follow the same standards

I never wear a skirt to an interview. I wear a dark, navy blue or charcoal gray pant suit, white cotton or silk top and low heeled shoes. When in doubt call the human resources department and ask what the company's dress code is.

I agree grouchy. It sort of makes me wonder why people like that even consider nursing as a career. One of my girlfriends was hired at a LTC facility about a week after receiving her license. She said the nurses were extremely nasty towards her and instead of offering her guidance they purposely allowed her to make mistakes, and then would report her to the DON. She called me two weeks after starting this job in tears. She had made a med error. The nurse working with her actually told her not to report it and to chart that she had given the correct dose What his intentions were is beyond me. Nobody should be subjected to that kind of environment. It is one of the reasons that errors occur in the first place in my opinion.

Who in the world told you that anyone can take the nclex? Another urban legend Why people make up such rumors is beyond me, but I can guarantee you that no one is allowed to take the nclex without the proper education, and proof of it no less.

Two of my former classmates have already left nursing and it's only been 16 months since we graduated. One didn't even bother to renew her license, but I didn't ask why.

A similar situation happened at a facility I worked in as an 11-7 aide. The aides pretty much had the run of the place. The only nurse who stood up to them was the one that I worked with. In return she was threatened and all four of her tires were slashed right on the facility premises. She called the police, but they never found out who did it. Once the situation escalated to that point I knew I had better get out while the getting was good. I didn't even give notice.

We're allowed to wear any color scrubs we like. I have 16 scrub tops (solids and prints) and 14 scrub bottoms so I can mix and match. They take up almost half of my closet space, but I'm always seeing scrubs that I like so I keep adding to the collection

Certain people need to build themselves up by putting others down. It's their own insecurities that fuel them. It's time to stop being hurt by these people and their vicious rumors. Don't be a victim for them anymore. You're letting them ruin something that I'm sure you loved doing at one point. Have you considered going to therapy to work out some of these issues? I have no idea why your former coworker even brought it up after all of these years. Take care of yourself.

Ah, to be 26 again.... I entered a practical nursing program at 35 and have been a nurse for over a year now. I'm currently taking a few classes that I need in order to enter an LPN-RN bridge program. I too wanted to start a nursing career when I was a lot younger, but life happens. I had my first child at 21 and just didn't have the time or money to devote to school. I was a single parent and worked many hours to support us. So, after my second child turned two I decided that it was time. I did what was important for my family and I don't have any regrets about waiting for a better opportunity. Look at your maturity as an advantage not a disadvantage. Most of my classmates were mid-late 20s to early 50s and had families. You will do fine. I wish you the best!

That explains the one year work obligation. I attended Greater Lowell Technical in Tyngsboro and tuition itself was $3650, but I believe it has increased since then. I'm not sure by how much though. The length of the program depends on the school. There is no standard that they all follow. Practical nursing programs can run anywhere from 10 to 18 months or up to 2 years for an associates degree. I live in MA as well and the program I attended was 10 months long. Clinicals were included in that 10 months. What program are you referring to?

The ones sold at Walmart are not the same negative heel shoes. The new ones are supposedly better than the original in the way of comfort and durability. You can find the new and original versions on Ebay very cheap. Search under "Kalso" or Earth Shoes.

I don't think a teacher-student relationship is appropriate under any circumstances. As hbscott pointed out how could the teacher be unbiased in their evaluation of that particular student? What about when the affair ends? I think we have all read horror stories about the "jilted lover". I'm sure many a career has been ruined by such behavior. night owl - I believe that the author of this thread is doing some type of research or something to that effect. This person has posted another topic as well. I believe it was regarding male instructors.

My husband is a project manager. In a previous life I dated a police officer, a lawyer and a physician who was A LOT older than me. I almost married the police officer, but then I met my husband and that settled that. He's everything I've ever wanted in a partner and so much more :blushkiss I wouldn't trade him for the world.

Unbelievable.... I was wondering why I keep receiving those solicitations from local hospitals and nursing facilities. It's disturbing to think that the BON would sell that information without our knowledge or consent. So much for good moral character

Gator, do you think that staffing problems, unsafe nurse-patient ratios and feeling overburdened are issues unique to med-surg? Uh uh. They are NURSING issues, period. Why is it that you are willing to work there for 2 years as a nursing assistant, but not as a nurse? Aren't the assistants just as overburdened and understaffed as the licensed staff? If I felt that I was being screwed I certainly would of left a long time ago for "greener pastures".

I have read quite a few posts from students complaining about how much they hate med-surg and wouldn't dream of working there after graduation. What is it about med-surg that turns so many people off exactly? I'm a med-surg nurse and believe me I know how frustrating it can be, but what area of nursing isn't these days? It makes me sad to think that med-surg is receiving such a bad rap.
