I, somewhat, feel your pain. I'm sorry that this has happened to us but it makes me accept things better knowing that this could happen to anyone, and also that I'm not going through things alone. I traveled out of the city to take the test (I'm still here) and I just got a call saying that my brother is going into an unexpected surgery(the brother whom I've been living with). Talk about adding stress on top of stress! I'm about to go back early to take care of him. I spoke to his nurse and it's a shame, but I was jealous that she gets to be called nurse and I don't. Tolerant, my job offer will be withdrawn if I "don't pass on the first try" so I know what you mean when you pretty much said that you're between a rock and a hard place. I keep refreshing the screen llike some good news is going to pop up! :-( I need an antidepressant.

Hey Tolerant Girl! I also took the NCLEX this morning and am pretty sure that I didn't pass. The computer definitely found my weakness and kept shooting those types of questions back to me. I wish I was being modest, but I'm pretty sure it didn't go well. I, like you, also have some outside stress going on in my life and I feel like a complete failure. I took a job in another state and am dreading the convo that I may have to have with my nurse manager. Not to mention, I heard the hospital that I'm going to is on a hiring freeze and that they'd have to re-extend the offer in the event you didn't pass the first time. By the way, I moved out of my apt to save money for the move and am sleeping on my brother's couch. I had to start my lease (in the new state) last wk in order to receive a rent special, so technically I'm paying rent on an apt that I dont even live in. I could go on and on. I got all of my cries out this morning and have been laying in silence ever since. Let's pray that the Lord will direct our paths and miraculously pass us. I'm not being negative, I'm just trying to be realistic...I sat in front of that computer screen and know I did terrible so although I'd like to think positively, It's kind of hard to. I wish you alllll the luck as you wait on your results!

Nursegirl: I would just go ahead and take the pre-req's anyway, they won't go to waste. Even if you do not get into the program you will still need them to complete your BSN, anywhere. My class had about 24 or so. We started out at 27 but lost 3 of them after the first semester (it was pretty tough). They don't have summer admission, it is fall only. Overall, I liked the program. It's straight to the point and pretty thorough. I did my clinicals at St. Elizabeth, Children's, The VA Hospital, and Christ. Some of my classmates also went to St. Luke. Thank You!!! I looked at all of those schools that you all recommended. ECU has an online Pediatric and Neonatal, but the other schools don't. I'm not too sure that I would be willing to commute a couple of hours (each way) to and from school in another major city for 2 years. Yikes!!! I'd hate to have to move just to further pursue my education. As big as Charlotte is, it's a shame that they don't have a variety of NP programs.

I've been offered a NICU job at a hospital in Charlotte, but would like to go back to school eventually. Thank You for responding

Has anyone else noticed that there aren't many NP programs offered in Charlotte? Maybe I'm not looking in the right places, but all I seem to see is FNP programs. I am interested in Peds and would eventually like to be an NP who specialized in Peds or Neonatal. Will I have to go elsewhere to fulfill this goal? Thank you. I have been googling and searching this site hoping to find otherwise. Thanks!!!

Hey Michigan to Texas, I, too, applied to several GN positions and actually came from out of town to attend the career fair at Baylor. I haven't heard anything yet either. There were soooo many people there. Two of the people that interviewed me were a little stand off-ish and I knew I didnt have a chance the minute I sat down. The third person was very pleasant but that was in a high demand area, so we'll see how that goes...

I know it is! So you mean to tell me that they only hire from within? Nursing shortage my @ss. She then went on to tell me that I could apply for an externship and then apply for a residency. Why would a Dec grad want to work as an extern for skimpy wages and then risk aplying for a residency that isnt guaranteed? Maybe I understood it wrong but I am almost POSITIVE that's what she said. I'm calling someone else in HR tomorrow.

I spoke to a Grady recruiter and she said that you had to already be an employee in order to be eligible for the residency. Have you heard otherwise? It kind of didn't make too much sense to me but I said ok!

I applied for a Critical Care Fellowship and the recruiter called me back within 2 days or so. She just let me know the steps that I needed to take and just let me know some more things about the program. She said that New Grads can apply to any RN position and if that unit decided to hire them then they would be teamed up with a preceptor. The fellowship was the only thing that was posted specifically for new grads. Hope this helped!

Smiles & Prayers you are awesome!!! I can't wait until you post some more so allnurses can increase your status and we don't have to hijack anymore threads! I've heard that Parkland is a wonderful place to work but they make you sign on for 2 years from the end of the internship and if you decide to leave before that time you have to pay $10,000. I definitely don't mind signing on but i just wanted to make you aware of what I've heard (via allnurses, lol). I spoke to the Baylor recruiter and she said that they'll have managers from 13 different units that will be at the career fair. I got excited until she said "...and we're expecting about 300 people in attendance"....yikes!!! That really discouraged me but I'm still flying down because I hate to think "what if"...ya know. I know Parkland definitely pays more, and i like that. I just live by the "You can't miss something that you've never had" philosophy, and I've never had that kind of money so honestly I don't have to have the highest rate of pay but it would certainly be nice. I'm in a BSN program too...actually an accelerated one. I already have a previous degree in a health-related field. Hopefully that'll help me. I wish I knew some things that would help you out but it sounds like you have everything figured out! I'm flying down Friday morning so wish me luck!

I've been wondering the same thing. All I know is that I have called Emory and the recruiter had a recording saying that they were not taking any new grads. It may have changed since then but this was only a few weeks ago. I called Grady and for their residency/internship program you have to already be an employee. She said that we would have to do an externship first and then apply for the internship. I hope this makes sense to you...I barely understand it myself. I've been in touch with the recruiter at CHOA and she said that they still have to forward the applications to the Nurse Managers for further review. I also spoke to Northside and they said that if they don't have any positions listed on the site then none were available. I didn't see any. I've called twice and they said that both times. I don't know what the selection criteria are. I was a bit discouraged because I am an out-of-state student who will be looking to relocate and one of the recruiters (cant remember which one) said that the relocation reimbursement comes out of the unit's budget. We all know that if a unit is tight on money they will be more likely to hire a local grad over a grad that will be relocating...well at least that's the logic that I'm thinking of. What places were you looking into? or have already applied to? I've applied in 4 states (including my home state). I'm young and just ready to move! Maybe someone from the area can offer you a little more insight but that is all I know at this moment

I found it! I applied for L & D and NICU @ Parkland! How long did it take them to get back with you? Do you know how many openings both units have? Are they putting a heavy emphasis on GPA? Do you think me being an out of state applicant will hurt me? As far as Baylor is concerned...you said our entire class is going, oh my! LOL. How large is your class? I hope I'm not flying down for nothing Are you in as Assoc or BSN program? Do they prefer one over the other? I know I'm bogging you down with questions but you seem to have alot of info about this! Did Baylor do any recent pay increases? That's a big difference considering that these hospitals are in the same area. I haven't heard from Parkland but I defitely applied. I've heard many good things about it.

I applied online at Parkland and haven't heard anything from them. I'm flying down this wknd and going to the Baylor job fair because I hear that they hire on the spot! Hey there! I live in the Cincinnati area and have heard quite a few people talking about the online CNM program (not specifically what you asked). I have not heard any bad things about it. The only thing that I have heard was that it was slightly competitive because they have alot of applicant from other states applying (because of the online convenience). I know some people were wondering if UC was like a rinky dink, online type thing, but I will tell you that UC is a wonderful school...a REAL school at that. It carries alot of credibility throughout this area. The campus is nice and the facilities are modern and up-to-date. It has a really good reputation. UC is affiliated with University Hospital which is Cincinnati's only Level 1 trauma hospital. Go for it! I graduate in December and am already looking into it from the future. I definitely wouldn't mind giving UC my money (or my employer's $ rather). I don't know anything about how the clinical arrangements are made. I'm sure I can find out for you though! I hope I helped a little!

Yes I do graduate in December! I tried to get a head start on things too but the recruiter told me to apply a little later. I began applying right before this Fall semester and they had GN Internships listed for September. I had to wait until the January applications opened up. I'm probably going to fly down in a few weeks. Have you heard anything about if it's very competitive or not? I know that plenty of students are graduating this December so the applicant pool will be pretty large! Thanks!!!

Well good luck to you! That is a GREAT sign! I'm about to fly out of state to a job fair because I've heard that they hire on the spot. They said IF I get hired, I'll be reimbursed for it. To fly somewhere to meet with 4 managers is wonderful! What state are you in? or flying to rather

QueenCityNurse, Quick question about the 90 day thing...is this 90 actual working days or is it 90 days from the time you start? You have been a great help...like a huge one! I was getting a bit discouraged. Does Presby pay more? If so, do you know how much more?

Louise99, Do they make you sign on for a certain time period upon accepting the nurse residency position? If so, how long?
