thanks everybody! It is my biggest fear that I would be put into an assignment, not that I couldn't do it just that if I am...1 time...then it will happen again and then after awhile this position will die. I think the initial key to the success of the position is to make it valuable on all levels...to management - positive customer service scores and to staff - relaxed enviroment=happy waiting patients. Keep the 'em coming! I need all the help I can get...I will update when I figure out what exactly I am supposed to be doing! LOL!

I was wondering if anyone has this type of position in their ED? I recently took an ED Nurse Liason position in a level 1 trauma center in IL and I am the 1st to have this position in a while...it was phased out and recently brought back. So that being said I am still trying to figure out what I am supposed to do for 12 hours...Your help and advice will be so greatly appriciated! Thanks in advance! Here is what I know.... ***It is part service recovery...so sorry you have been waiting for 6 hours for your sore throat...how can I help? ***It is part medical translator...trauma enters I have the nursing background to "translate" from medical jargon to layman terms and help guide families through the steps of what next kinda thing... ***It is part nursing...float to assist...not take my own "team" of patients but as needed help decompress The department has a FT chaplan, social worker, and a new case manager as well. Without over lapping and being the most help what are somethings that would be beneficial for the department? for the staff nurse? for the charge nurse? Thanks! TD

Last summer I made sure the couch doesn't leave the living room and this summer I am in charge of making sure the beach doesn't leave the lake...BIG responsibility, I know, but some one has to do it!

Pat Benner, Novice to Expert She was the theorist base for the program I went through. Good book too...if you are into reading theory and stuff. If you are in nursing school look to your nursing school's vision and mission, there should be a theorist in there.

i usually leave things for a sub to do, like filling, because I know that they want to be helpful...maybe when they call and ask, if its ahead of time offer your service. Things you like to do, I could use a good organizer...not my strong suit, I am sort of an organizational lemming, I follow the direction well, but just can't get it started on my own. If you want to clean or something by all means go ahead! Bring a magazine! or craft project, but make sure its something you can walk away from because interuptions are often! good luck!

minooka, illinois. hanging out here since jan 2007(1.5 years). best job for my family! i have to say that about a month ago i loved this job a whole lot more than i do today, but it is friday and i don't have to work this weekend or any weekend for that matter! so i guess i like it pretty well. **i hope we get to see the nuisance again! i loved it, praiser!

I had some cranky parents call my principal and complain that I was not listening to the child, or that I was not...I don't know... the result is my policy that I eval (temp, BR needs, breakfast, when is lunch)and "treat" with crackers, a 5 min rest (ONLY!), BR, water and then back to class. On the 2nd visit if the child still says they "just can't make it" I will repeat temp and allow them to call home. I will only give clinical data, like temp, # of visits today, if they said if they had breakfast and when lunch is. I believe it is up to mom and dad and student to choose what happens next. I have been known to say "student has not coughed in my office" "student says that they vomitted, but has not in my office and is not pale or doesn't appear to have" It works in that I don't feel stressed or like I have to make the big choice. If parents want kids to stay, I will encourage them and return them to class with cracker or br pass and a little go get 'em tiger! kinda cheer! ***for reference, I have 5th and 6th graders only.*** I do like the "why do you think you are feeling like this? thing, I may try that.

sure getting the heating and cooling fixed would be great, but we are building and new facility and so most things will just be pushed off like anything that isn't on fire or things like that!

Mine is very bland! tabacco/jaundice colored walls with a tacky sun moon border and a bulletin board I update occasionally. We don't have great heating or air...so most of the time my door is closed. Which makes for a sad school nurse so most of the time i deal with the fluctuations in temps. Do you have posters? Do you have paintings? What kinda stuff do you hang up? Just wondering! Thanks! For those of you with older kids do you hang posters...everytime I look at the ones in the teacher stores I think those are way too babyish for my grown up 6th graders! What do you do?

No Weekends No Holidays & Summer VACATION!!!!!! I took my job for those reasons. I am in the same union as the janitor and secretaries and am proud to be included with such great people (at least the people I work with). I do wish that I had a TRS and the some of the other benefits the teachers have, but with my life as it is now...I don't want to work in the hospital. I would be upset if I was called an assistant though. I sent my name plaque back 3 times because they got my credential incorrect! I earned every letter behind my name!!!!!! I say ADVERTISE, ADVERTISE, ADVERTISE! Be proud of what you have earned! And all of your continuing education! Tell the teachers you have completed an athsma management class, a nutritional advisement class and so on...you will be suprised at how much more respect you will recieve! When I did this I recieved a lot of questions about mom and dad's heart history and surgical questions as well as womens health questions...I used to be a ED RN...jack of all trades master of none! (please don't take offense! to this...we do it all , but I swear I could have been there forever and never quite learned it all!!!) Good Luck! Don't compare yourself to others...its tempting but we are all here for different reasons...mine is supposed to be in bed, but up playing with her Daddy!!! totally worth every struggle!

I use water and soap. I had read something a while back about new skin growth. Some kids ask for H2O2, but I refuse and tell them to let thier mom when they get home. I use H2O2 for cleaning blood out of clothing to send kids back to class and not have to call Mom. Oh and teachers can use it for whatever...with in reason...they are adults! I just heard of the Ketchup thing in a parents magazine!!! I don't have little little kids, but thought of suggesting that to the other nurses in the district! I am going to make the kids leave thier planner with me to get my ice packs returned! I am sick of throwing $$ away! Plus the longer the kids keep em the more they play with them & that breaks them! I also want to make some warm packs--rice packs--the girls are just getting visits from aunt flo and c/o cramps a lot!

SUB! I think that is a great way to get a taste of it and get out fast or get the dirt on where the next opening will be. I am lonely sometimes, but I can wander the building, help with class experiments, go to recess (with a cooler of ice packs and walkie talkie), I get to play and do all the cool things. My office is isolated, but across from the gym so I hang with the PE teachers a lot...they are funny. I think the longer you are some place the more the staff and teachers respect and seek out your help. I am artsy and am often enlisted to help with posters and propaganda. I have also felt more respected and trusted by the end of this year and several of my teachers have come to me to explain Mom's procedure or to interpret Dr mumbojumbo or explain the action of a med. Good Luck! I think happiness is the most important thing and for me at this time in my life I need time, not adreniline (former/recovering ED nurse). That is not to say I don't miss the "fun"

I am not on the pay scale as the teachers..IL doen't require that the school have a CSN-certified School Nurse-and my district dosen't want us to have it because then I would be on the same scale as the teachers with all of thier benefits-TRS, Tenure! As for getting in...SUB! wanna job I know a district that is desperate! Just kidding! But I think that is a great way to get a feel and get your foot in the door. Not all of the nurses in my district have thier BA or BSN...never hurts to look into it! peace

I am tempted too. I tried, but the thought of being inside on a beautiful day or sleeping all day because I worked the night before...maybe I'll do it next summer!

I was just thinking of you all! I "tried" to get a summer job and then realized that EOW stinks! So I have been hanging with the most awsome person...my daughter! & visiting every park we see. Today the Zoo! Tommorrow the possibilities are endless. I have to work, but this is the life! I am so glad that I am sticking around. I applied to grad school...we shall see... Oh and bootcamp (not the real one, but the one with the stay at home mommies at the park district) is kicking my booty! & praiser...I loved the louse! Warning SAD story twisted! We are nurses so twisted is fun! Please Do NOT take offense and if you are I will say I am sorry! When I worked in the hospital we had an elderly man come into the ED and he was neglected by his family. He was so sweet all he asked for was a sandwich. He was covered in lice and maggots and bed sores and urine and feces and other assorted yuck! It was the most pittiful thing EVER! Our supervisor asked if we could spare an aide or 2 (I worked MS at a VERY small hospital!) to bathe the man. Of course we wanted them to go...I worked with the most awsome TEAM! So we wanted to do something nice for the 2 who spent over 2 hours with this man caring for him in the most respectful way. We bought them dinner and made them buttons....one slogan said, "I am NITrific!" & the other "MAGGOTnificent!" I always think NITrific as I am checking little heads! Have a great rest of summer!

i just wanted to say thanks and have a great summer!!!!!! i have thought so many times about leaving this job and wondered why we do this to ourselves...no i can do nothing about the poster putty in your hair!!! do i look like your mom!???!?!! & no you may not use my scissors! (i can hear that angry parent on the phone with the principal!) you are in 6th grade! but then i have a student who comes in here and has lost nearly 50lbs and will not be having surgery this summer!:yeah:and she says she couldn't have done it without my support! :loveya: wow! this job may not be my dream job or a perfect one, but what job is? i get a lot more benefits here and thanks than i ever did in the hospital! so what i am trying to say is :bow:thanks:bow: to you for helping me to carry this 50lb doubt on my shoulders and learning that this is the right job for me! who knows where our paths lead as long as we keep moving and have good friends with us!:redbeathe:redbeathe:redbeathe:redbeathe:redbeathe:redbeathe:redbeathe now which way to the beach!!??

OK I was asked to work on a program that would encourage healthy eating for my 6th graders. My take on this would be a lunch table that students would volunteer to sit at and we could talk about diets, health and wellness. With parental and school permission and approval! I asked for more responsiblity and I got it...oh boy! I was wondering if anyone had any insight on a ciriculum or teaching guide. I thought I would have a topic of the day and a short lesson and then have a round table type talk and q&a. I did take a nutrition class in college, but thats it & I sure don't want to pass on my insecurities and bad habits!!! Thanks in advance.

Nevermind the peanut allergic kid with red blotchy hives to his mouth and neck and that annoying high pitch squeak he is making...he loves cup cakes! He should be eating them, right!

2nd, i was just talking about this with a teacher i work with! i believe there are too many entry points. i have worked with adns, lpns both who i learned tons from and would trust to do any of the skills that i perform and would rather they do them because they are more skilled than i, that said, i still believe in order to advance our profession from handmaidens to professionals, a vital and unique part of the wellness and recovery of a patient, we need to have a consistent and high standards. oh and vote and write to our leaders and value ourselves as professionals who make a difference!

I don't doubt that they have well trained and very clinically intellegent resources, the story just is not focused on the nurse. The audience, I think, and people in general want to see the docs as heros. I have met some docs that are, but I have met many many nurses who are heros!
