  1. I am also going directly from my BSN to MSN this fall. The decision of whether or not to accept wonderful job opportunities or to further my education at this point was SO difficult for me - I really struggled with it. This was mainly because so many people were giving me their own opinions on what they believed was the right decision. Ultimately, I think, what makes the most sense is what you feel is the right route for you. Does it make sense for you financially and personally to go straight into a masters program? Is it more important to you to get the year (or more) of bedside experience before you go into a masters program? There is no right or wrong way to go about pursuing YOUR own career path. The program that I am attending varies significantly in terms of nursing experience, but most in my specialty group have one year of RN experience. Anyways, I know everyone has a different opinion but I am excited for my future career and the challenges and rewards that it will bring. I wish everyone success and fulfillment in their own path.
  2. I was surprised by this also....I am working on my BSN (an accelerated program) right now, and have called many hospitals in the los angeles area about qualificaitons. most recently, ucla new grad program has changed their criteria to only new grads with BSNs to be qualified. it's that way in nyc in many of the hospitals right now as well (ny presbyterian, mt sinai, nyu). I think it's just a further indicator of the current economy and hospitals attempt to control the heavy influx of new grads.
  3. Hey everyone! So i know I'm ahead of myself....I don't graduate from nursing school until May 2010, but all of these stats about new grads not getting jobs has motivated me to get a little prepared for what I might be facing. Here's my question to RN grads, both new and old job seekers: Where in LA are new grad programs offered? If anyone could help me out, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!
  4. Hey malaski! Have you started the UCLA program? I just wantedd to know how it's going, if it's happening (I heard some rumors that they shut it down or something). Is it really hard right now to find a job in LA? I'm hearing some horror stories that are making me incredibly nervous. Please let me know what's going on out there! Thanks for your help!
  5. Wow. Ok great. I have some healthcare experience at UCLA but I will try to find an internship out here before applying. Did you apply when you were still in nursing school? Before you took the NCLEX? I will be graduating in May 2010, but plan on applying anyways in January. Is this ok to do? Do they require your transcripts when you apply? Thanks for all of your helpful feedback, Addie
  6. Hey Malaski, I am looking to apply for the new grad program next year. I'm finishing up my BSN at NYU and am headed back to LA right after. What is the application process like? I know it's extremely competitive (congrats for getting in!) but wanted to know how the selection process works. Thanks for your input! Addie
  7. Hi 2010 Hopeful, I am currently in the NYU accelerated program in my second semester. I barely have a minute to breathe, but I really love the program. Regardless of where you go, most accelerated program are a year and a half of exhaustion. As far as your questions, I know that you have to have a 3.0 GPA or they wont even look at your application. This is because the program is really rigorous and they want to know you will be able to handle the workload. But believe me, I know that people in their second degrees are in different places in their lives than when they were freshman, sophmores in college!!! What I would recommend is taking the prerequisites and getting As in all of them. This would probably bring your GPA up to the required 3.0 and they would see that you are taking school seriously and have a good grasp on the sciences. That said, I would definitely retake Statistics! They really emphasize doing well in the prereqs. The majority of our class did VERY well (As) in the prereqs when applying. And I think it is easier to get in in the spring. At least that is what an admissions officer told me when I was applying. I know that a lot of schools offer Masters in Nursing Administration degrees....I am pretty sure that NYU does. Hope this helps! Just do the BEST you can in your prereqs! That is your best shot. If you get all As they will see that you are willing and capable of suceeding in the program. I know how stressful it all is, but keep on going! If not NYU, then there are a million other great nursing programs around. Don't limit yourself!!! Addie
  8. We are all in the same boat! Aaugh I am so overwhelmed with everything I have to do in such a little period of time! Anyone who needs a roommate, please let me know--I would love to live with a nursing student. See you at orientation! Addie
  9. Any fellow nurses needing a roommate? I have no idea where to live, and have like 15 days to put it all together from across the country (California)! Addie
  10. Got off the waiting list! Was very torn about the decision, but I've decided to go to NYU instead. I wish everyone an amazing experience in SF....such an incredible city!
  11. Hello everyone! I got my acceptance letter on Christmas eve. So excited! However I have an incredible job at UCLA that I want to stay at for a while longer before starting the program, so I plan on deferring until Fall 09. Does anyone know the deferral policy?
  12. Nope, no word yet. I'm used to this waiting game. I'm sure everyone can empathize.
  13. Hey everyone! Well, I got waitlisted for Spring 09. I am supposed to hear by today....so nervous. Would love to go there. Send me some good karma! Addie
  14. Did everyone here apply to the ABSN program or the 24 month?
  15. am i the only person left in limbo? has anyone else heard anything recently? (kinda) practicing patience, addie
  16. hey kristen, yeah i heard from pace around two, three weeks ago? i think? sometime around then. but i decided to defer....they wanted to know an answer very quickly. as far as stats, i had pretty high grades from ucla. and so far, (god willing), ive gotten all A's in my prereqs. im about to finish off chem and micro very soon. i feel like pace looks at the whole package, so any volunteer work experience im sure is a plus. im sure you will hear very soon! and believe me, I totally empathize with the waiting. lets just hang on in there!!! by the way, anyone who was already accepted to nyu, when did you have to let them know your decision? three weeks? two? just wondering.... addie
  17. and waiting some more! i think my mailman is going to file a restraining order against me. most everyone has heard both acceptances/rejections, but I am still hanging out in limbo. they have not yet "made a decision on my file." so not a fun place to be. not to mention the fact that I am insanely impatient. ah well, just needed a place to vent.
  18. and STILL waiting........
  19. Ah the waiting continues! Please hurry NYU! I am going crazy!
  20. Thanks so much for the advice you guys. I really appreciate it. I think I have an idea about what I'm going to do. I think I'm going to defer and take a year off and see where else I can get in. It would be nice to take a year off from school anyways if I dont get into NYU. Get some more experence under my belt! And it wouldn't be that I'm saying "no" to pace, just "maybe later." Hope everyone is well! Let us know the minute anyone else finds out! I will do the same!
  21. I'm in LA. And I'm in the exact same predicament. I dont really want to go to Pace...it was kindof a backup....and now, it seems like that is the only option unless I defer, take a year off, and see if I can get in anywhere else in the meantime (may move up to San Fran actually...kinda tired of LA). Yeah I will have finished up all the prereqs by May too. When I submitted my app, I had all the prereqs finished except chem and micro (which I'm taking now). I really dont know what to do though. I have to say something to Pace by the 6th and Im guessing i wont hear from NYU by then. Do I go ahead and go to Pace? Have you heard anything about that school? I tried posting on the page but nobody has responded. Do any NYers know anything about that nursing school? Anyone? If so, please let me know!!!! I kinda just applied on a whim. But now, it may be where I end up. Crossing my fingers for NYU.
  22. Well the same thing happened to me as you, Duke. I called to check my app status and she said that one of my transcripts was missing.....then she found it. So my app is (hopefully) goign to be reviewed in the next decade. haha. Oh well, what can you do. As for the rolling admissions, I'm not too fond of it either. But I did look at last years posts and they let some of their applicants know REALLY late. Like REALLY late. They told one girl 5 DAYS before orientation. How insane is that? Maybe that was an exception, but a lot of people find out staggered. Samuel Merritt is a great school....hope you get in. I really want to live in San Francisco eventually. Looked into SM, but did not have all the prereqs they wanted at the time (Pharm, etc). Have you finished all of NYUs and SM's prereqs already? Good luck! addie
  23. NO, and I'm dying to hear!!! haha. It is frustrating. But I did just get into Pace University's BSN/MSN program in NYC today actually, so that was exciting. I have to confirm or defer acceptance by May 6th, and I dont know if I'm going to hear from NYU by then! Aah! Are you supposed to be hearing from anywhere else Duke? Did you apply anywhere in California?
  24. Hey everyone! I just got an acceptance package from Pace today for the combined BS/MS program! Very excited. Did not know it was ranked #9 in the nation for FNPs. Impressive I must say. Anyways, I have until the 6th of May to give a response and I would really like some input from alumni or others that may know anything. Where do we practice clinicals? Did you enjoy the program? Are you glad that you chose to go to Pace or was it way too disorganized? PLEASE give me input! I may choose to defer acceptance just to see what else is out there....still waiting on NYU....I am not in too much of a rush to get nursing school over with. But Pace is definitely a great choice. please respond with your experience or input! anyone! thanks! addie
