  1. Are you still career coaching? If so, I would love to get some advice. Let me know your terms. PM me. Thank you
  2. Is there anyone on this discussion forum that is already in the UTHSC PhD program? If so, I would love to hear from you! Thanks,
  3. MBARN replied to haemma's topic in Agency Nurses
What about supplemental? I signed up with them but never worked a shift. Do you know how many patient's per nurse or other info about working conditions? Thanks, Joy
  4. Glad I found this thread! Would like to get info on disseration topics in nursing that have the most grant potential (or how do I research this info, interested in holistic subjects, admin and nursing management subjects), also any updates on salary. At a school that I am interested in applying to, the salaries are all over the place (also would like the most up to date source for PhD salaries). Lastly, do PhD's still do bed side nursing to keep skills up or for more money? just curious.
  5. From my research entry level doctorates start around 70 or 80 K, many of my nursing professors make well over 100 K.
  6. I am glad I FINALLY found this thread. I am planning on pursuing a nursing doctorate but I am having some problems narrowing down my research focus. My two areas of passion include integrative medicine (non pharm solutions to health problems and keeping people healthy) and nursing management/marketing. I am in my early 50's with 2 bachelors degrees, one in marketing and management and one in nursing with an MBA with two concentrations, one in international business one in statistics. So, here are a few questions for those seasoned PhD professors: 1. What would give me the most efficient and beneficial area to focus my research? I REALLY want to avoid research in the clinical setting such as subjects like oral care, bedpan use, things of that nature. However, looking at the NIH grant proposals it seems like a lot of money will be spent on ways to get people better faster. I understand cost is a major concern for government but I want to stay out of the hospital setting for research and focus more on the business efficiency side, Any ideas? 2. I have ordered "Dissertation Journey" 2010 from BN because I was told this is a very good book to read when one is deciding about a PhD program. Are there any other places I can look for information about how the academic world works, how to get tenure, what is important, basically the "scoop" about being successful as a nursing school faculty? Any other insight would be greatly appreciated.
  7. Go straight to nursing school, the profession needs male nurses!
  8. Thanks for that info, btw how many patients did you have and how did you like working at HCA facilities? They are the agency that recruits for HCA I believe.
  9. Sorry, can't type today, it is suppose to be Thank You Juan! lol
  10. Thank You Juan, your answers are sooo insightful I truly appreciate your comments. As clarification, not planning on getting a position in a school of nursing, maybe the school of public health but not nursing. Or maybe there is a faculty position offered in another area, not sure but will have a discussion with the Director of the public health program at the university and see what he says about all of it and will post when I know for others to see! Best regards!
  11. Thank you so much Mags Mom, good info! Well I understand the jobs available for a nurse with an MBA but I don't want to manage in nursing at all. My plan is to research, teach (community setting) and consult with companies on wellness and strategy. Basically combining the MBA with Public health policy and then the nursing with the promotion/prevention and also keep the nursing skills by doing some PRN. Eventually I want to research and publish in academic journals and write a books for the masses!
  12. Any thoughts on starting a PhD program at 53 years old? Thoughts about jobs, type of work, combining and MBA and BSN with the PhD. I love health promotion and prevention. Any discussion would be appreciated! Thanks,
  13. Jobs, ages, difficulty of program, getting into a program.
  14. Oh sorry I meant 7 semesters! sorry for the typo!
  15. What type of agencies are in Houston? Is there a decent amount of work at these agencies? Pros and Cons.
  16. I am considering the FNP program at a top university. I will be able to complete it in 7 months with no debt and still be able to work 4 days a week as a nurse with full benefits. My concern, as with many, is the job market. I will be in my mid 50's when I graduate and I was wondering what the job market will be for FNP's now and in the future? I also have an MBA and my passion is integrative health and preventative health and lobbying for CAM research. I am board certified in Cardio vascular and plan on getting my diabetes certification. Is this a good career move? I am interested in job security, flexibility and income, in that order. Thanks for any suggestions.
  17. LOL trauma. Well I have 20 years of sales and international business consulting experience in addition to a BSN, so just looking for my next adventure! I think private practice with an integrative medicine model would be right up my alley!
  18. WOW Zenman you made my day!
  19. Is 52 too old to start an NP career when the nurse has had 3.5 years of nursing experience and an MBA with consulting and sales experience? VERY interested in integrative health and prevention as a sole practioner. Would like some insight. Thanks,
  20. If I am passionate about integrative/alternative health and PREVENTION of disease, which is the best degree to get, would it be ANP or FNP?
  21. I would also like some information about this career track! Thanks
  22. MBARN replied to NurseSue66's topic in Cardiac
TVCNURSE, really appreciate your information. I am thinking about buying the Progressive Care Nursing Certification Preparation, Review, and Practice Exams. Would that be all I need to pass the exam? I am on a budget and want to get the most bang for my buck! Thanks, MBARN
  23. Is there career advantages for taking the PCCN exam? Thanks
  24. MBARN replied to NurseSue66's topic in Cardiac
    Thanks it does!
  25. MBARN replied to NurseSue66's topic in Cardiac
Thank you for the info. Does working at a CVIMU qualify as progressive care? What type of units qualify for progressive care? Thanks, Joy
