Lack of male role models and excess of estrogen
Dude, you sound exactly like me, word for word. I was half-way through nursing school and i realized it wasnt for me. Everything you have brought up are the reasons why i decided I didn't want to do it. I thought about being a PA and still think about it, but right now im ok with working on the business side of the hospital.

Male Nurses/female Patients
can you expand on what you mean by that?

about being harassed as a male
pretty extreme sorry, but as a male, when i was working as a CNA i always felt like the other cnas who were all female were constantly talking about sexual issues, such as how big (blank) guy was or who they slept with pretty uncomfortable situation, but i guess I now have a perspective on how it makes females feel when a whole bunch of guys are making sexual jokes etc duno, i feel like this is pretty common in the work situations I have been in, in this female dominated profession

Nursing is not always recession-proof
interesting prespectives, i think we would all love to hear more about this issue from experienced nurses

At a fork in the road...need your wisdom
I should throw my 2 cents in this too I switched my major from business to nursing, because i realized i love medical sciences, i love learning about anatomy, microbio, nutrition, etc so i decided on nursing as my career, mid-way thru my second semester i realized i just didnt want to do it, i mean i LOVED lecture bc i loved learning about the disease process, but i hated clinicals and i hated the job of being a nurse well its been 6months later, and i can say i still sometimes i fee like i should of stuck with nursing, but i realized why, because im scared that I dont know what else i will do? i am finishing up my degree in public health and hope to get a health promotion job, but i still have that fear, getting a job in nursing is much easier I think one way to figure out if its for you or not, is to look beyond the career opportunties and the pay and think about the worst possible situation in nursing and whether you would still want to do it? if you still have that passion, i believe nursing would be for you

Working with all females - fringe benefit or danger zone?
wow that sounds terrible dont pat them on the back? everyone thinks ur gay or a sexual predator?
-
Is this Legal?
I actually had a question about this myself is it normal for them to ask you to come in anyway if you told them you have the flu/cold and you dont want to spread it to patients?
-
Working with all females - fringe benefit or danger zone?
its going to be different, you cant speak the same way you do around guys and being the minority is not fun IMO
-
Thank you for your sympathy NOT
that happened to some students in my first semester class, one girl fell down while roller blading on her elbow, some how she become septic and went to the ER and missed a test, my teacher did not allow her to retake it and there was no way for her to pass the semester because of it... pretty heart less IMO, i thought nursing was supose to be about compassion, guess not when it comes to students...

heavy lifting
wow alot of new dicussion, in my current clinical experience, i really have not had to move any patients for whatever reason, besides adjusting so far but i can tell you, i worked as a CNA for 3 months, and the first day i was there we had to lift a 300+ women from her bed to wheel chair, i really strained my lower back, i couldnt even do anything the rest of my 8 hr shift on top of that i didnt say anything bc it was my first day (ya real smart) but luckily the strain was healed within 2 weeks, no harm

Career change/why so neg on nursing?
duno if this is true, but have any of you heard the stat that within 5 years most nurses leave their job to higher positions or out of the field? any merit to this "stat"

customer service and nursing
a lil backround on me, i just finished my first year of nursing skool and am lukewarm about my experience i have alot of experience working in retail while in highschool as well as college so i wanted to compare my experiences there to being a nurse and was wondering if i could handle the "crap" nurses have to put up with as compared to the retail environment When i worked retail I could deal with alot of it, but i was working part time and i didnt care for the job, on top of it, i use to get internally annoyed quite often when i had to deal with rude/cheap/annoying customers who felt entitled
-
customer service and nursing
I had a question for those people who have worked retail, especially customer service and i wanted to know if they could compare their experiences vs nursing in terms of the "bs" one has to deal with, as well as patients vs customers and how rude/wrong/etc they are to you basically what im asking is is nursing like customer service retail jobs in terms of the bs and "the customer is alwasy right" stuff....

Man Diff...
how about when your back gives up on you? alot nurses complain about back pain, with their own patient load, if ur taking on other RNs loads, how long can ur back last?

Need advice and insight
I am just a student, but i was wondering how come u cant get a bathroom break? when i worked as a CNA some of the other cnas chose not to take em bc it was really busy, but i took them anwyz ( it didnt win me any friends) but i felt like i really needed them, is this the same way in nursing, or is it even harder because of the greater responsilibty of a nurse

What's nursing school like?
well me and my really good friend are in it, and sometimes we feel like outcasts.... maybe it would have been different if i went into nursing school not knowing anybody
-
Need advice and insight
Have you been a CNA yet? or volunteered? personally IMO being a CNA will prob make you not want to be a nurse, bc of the back breaking work as well as the non-technical aspects of the job but maybe your experience will be different, this is a tuff decision to make have you been to a job that was on your feet for hours at a time? does that matter? very interested in your final decision, if i can be of many more help ask away!

What's nursing school like?
honestly... alot easier then i thought, the tests are pretty easy if you are good at science and are a good test taker however, its alot of work, alot of bs busy work and clinicals are on the difficult side, there is a lot to know, but its not hard stuff I also agree with other posters, that i do miss having other guys in my classes, its quite different
-
Man Diff...
why dont you just vent your frustrations? I know if that happened to me slowly i would get more and more annoyed until i snapped but i guess thats me,

What are clinicals all about????
welll sorry to say, it is true, clincial is alot harder then theory, but the good news is, if you study your skills, and know them well, clinical should be a breeze first semester clinical you dont do much for the first 6 weeks, then you do ur first med pass, then shots, then you learn how to do a catheter, but may or may not be able to perform that task (due to lack of need) second semester is much harder, bc you are doing the meds alone while the instrutor checks you off, and my instructor really grills us about meds, so it can be frustrating

Is it hard to get into College of Dupage ADN Program?
i applied and was wait listed my college of dupage GPA at the time was a 3.73 overall it was lower around 3.3 but they have a specific amount of classes they want u to take and base ur gpa on those classes only if you havent taken your prereqs yet, i would suggest going to kishwaukee community college by NIU, you will be waitlisted for a 1.5 but u are guaranteed in as long as you have a 2.5 gpa! but its a tougher program then others, they require 80 percent pass rate on all their tests/projects/etc and the clincials are very far, they are in rockford which is 70mins away from dekalb

Male Nurse Mentor
im a male nursing student I can give you some feedback in what nursing school is like first off i wanna say its MUCH easier then people here are saying, once you get the hang of the tests, it gets to be a piece of cake clinicals are harder, bc of the stuff you are required to know, and the pace overall nursing school is alot of work, but it is def possible to hold a job, or do track and field what are your motivations for being a nurse, aside from the options it offers and pay

Need advice and insight
I wanted to chim in here im 24 and i just finished my first year of nursing school, and am lukewarm about the experience. It is much easier theory wise then people have stated, once you get the test structure down, its a breeze IMO. Clinicals on the other hand are more difficult, and the entire process is time consuming. I cant speak for the other male nurses here, but i always get the impression of being slightly out of place. Ive had 2 patients during my med surg rotation who asked the RN assigned to me, "whether the student was male or female" and when they told em they were male, they didnt want me to be there. Ive also had older nurses yell at me for pretty much no reason. but I think the bottom line is, whether you will enjoy being a nurse, I think about it like this, if they required the same amount of time/effort and financial compensation, which one would u do?
