Working in LTC during the RN transition
I think because in these econmic times we are looking for any reason that someone wuld NOT hire us. I know here in MN if you work at LTC - it is frowned upon later if you want a RN job at Mayo. Ok - that is the rumor going around - right now Mayo has a hiring freeze so we shall see what happens next. Like I said before I plan on moving as soon as I finish the RN so I am hoping the stigma of LTC that is here isn't everywhere. But again - alot of this could be rumor - I will be honest I have never in my life seen such cut throat cattiness (sp?) and downright bitchiness has I have seen in just the general education classes - I am hoping to avoid that as much as possible - I keep repeating - unless you hear it from the horses mouth or get it in writing - it is a rumor!!! UGH!!

Working in LTC during the RN transition
I am in Lpn class now -and I am going RIGHT into the RN transition ASAP - will it hurt my resume if I work in LTC during the Rn classes?? I am currently in MN but as SOON as I finish the RN we are moving back to IL does that make a difference?? Just curious Thanks, Lyn:wink2:

How do you balance work\family\school?
PROZAC!!!! Seriously - the first thing you HAVE to remember is that EVERYONE IS IN A DIFFERENT SITUATION!!! PERIOD. DO NOT try to keep up with others - they are not you and you are not them. It make take you longer, or you might breeze through it - accept either. I had a heck of a time with Anatomy - With three kids, a OTR truck driving hubby, and not family to support while he is gone, plus I am not as quick of a learner as I used to be (lol), was and IS a pain. I had to remember that it is OK to fail the perserverence will only make it that much sweeter. I tried to keep up with the "younger" crowd and kept asking why I couldn't made my self esteem and grades plummet. Now that I am working in a LTC facility (part time) - I truly LOVE my residents and it really boosted my moral when my residents ask for me and smile when I walk in!! One day at a time!! Good Luck (for me too) Lyn

Can anyone suggest ideas for volunteering?
I am very interested in Organ donation - so I am volunteering for Life Source. I do to fundraisers and high schools and get people to understand the process and the mportance od organ donation. Plus, since my mom's and my MIL's organs were donated - I have personal experience. Just an idea - or another one is Ronald McDonald house :)

What is with me?? Do I give up?
I have been doing the prereq's for 3 years!! YEAH 3 YEARS!! I started off great, but once I hit the A&P - went down hill!! Spring of 06 - Hubby was in hospital dropped AP 1 Fall of 06 - took Chem because it seemed there was chem in the beginning of AP Spring of 07 - Started off Ok in AP - bombed the bone and tissue test - ended up in the hospital with a miscarriage (did NOT know I was expecting) - dropped the class Fall of 07 - GOT A D Spring of 08 - HERE WE GO AGAIN??????? I am a 35yr old mom of three (11, 7,6) - hubby is a OTR truck driver - home on weekends and then I do overnight on those weekends as a CNA at an assisted Living center. How come EVERYONE ELSE CAN BUT I CAN"T? I even sit down to study and with chant (in my head)- "I need to study!" But can not seem to focus. So, I am also a very emotional and easily stressed person - I used to be able to handle anything, but in 2004 my mom died suddenly, Hubby had a heart attack and then my dad committed suicide - then we moved in 2005 - I can not seem to get back on track from all of this. Financially we are better then ever, but I can not seem to handle the every day chaos anymore - it take me two hours to calm down from yelling at the kids to go to bed!! No, I have NO hobbies or outlets, but I am beginning to think I need medication - if I go on meds will this hurt me in the long run?? Sorry so long - just needed to pour it out!! Hubby actually told me to drop out because it might be too hard for me!! THANKS SWEETIE!!! Lyn

Las Veas Convention in March '08
Ok, the main reason conventions have been moving to Vegas is not only the 24 hour entertainment, but the fact that the labor for putting up the conventions and the halls themselves are way cheaper than any where else. My hubby puts up conventions in Chicago and it USED to be the main hub, until the rising cost of labor and even McCormick place raising their rates for floor space makes it impossible to make money off these shows. Only the bigger conventions stayed and even those have scaled back dramatically!!! ANYWAY - is this a convention worth going even for a nursing student??? I need a vacation!! LOL

What If I Don't Make It In
Calm down and relax. I am also taking the C in AP - but I am taking a couple classes to counter act it. I am only going for AD in Nursing, but because everyone else is in this town it is hard to get into the last science classes. I am also using the trial and error method - writing down what works for me to study and also what doesn't so that when i do hit the nursing classes - my study skills will be better honed Just a thought

Is this EVERYWHERE???
RCTC is doing a "point" system - the better GPA - more points the more re req's - more points It seems to be Ok I guess - I am just freaking because I am barely passing A&P1 - have three kids and an OTR truck driving hubby. Plus, we would like to move OUT of MN and can not do this until I graduate - but NO PRESSURE HUN!!! LOL Thank you for all your replies. I did FINALLY not only put my foot down and told everyone to help - but I also asked for help which come to find out are two different things!!! So, I will just learn to bend a little and quit thinking I am superwoman!! LOL Lyn

How hard was nursing school?
It depends on what else you have gong on in your life. If you can block out everything else for awhile and FOCUS you will be fine. This my my second time taking A&P1 - BUT I have three kids, a hubby that is a truck driver and I am a habitual procrastinator!! I am BARELY passing - in fact so close I registered for it again next semester JUST IN CASE!! First off after lecture study STUDY - if you start to wait you WILL get behind!! It is attitude - A&P is ALOT of info ALOT!!! Take you time stay on top of it and tell you DH that if he wants a better life for him and his family - he has to help and SUPPORT you. WORKED for mine!! My DH did the shopping (WALMART) and cleaned the kitchen for me today so that I can study!! Keep reiderating (sp?) the even though YOU are in school - the TEAM (family) has to kick it up so that the TEAM can benefit once you are done.

Is this EVERYWHERE???
Ok, that is better!!! Not to brag, but clinicals are where I do better! I can put books into real life (sort of). Basically, I am more hands on smart rather than book smart.
-
Is this EVERYWHERE???
Ok, I am probably making a mountain out of a molehill but..... My CC here in MN boasts of 99% pass rate of the License exam - Ok pretty good BUT what they do NOT tell you is: out of 75 students who start - only 25 finish IS this NORMAL?? Over HALF of students do not finish? Now, my school has changed the prerequists (sp?) so that you HAVE to do all the basic classes before you can even apply, but STILL!!!! I have one more semester to go then I can apply and I am already freaked!!!! Thinking about either quitting my job or hiring a MAID!!! I personally like the maid idea!! LOL My job is VERY easy - overnights at an Assisted Living center - mostly Alzheimers pts. I can study for a couple hours there and I only work the weekends. Ok, I will stop panicking and go back to studying Anatomy!! Lyn
-
Is it just me?
I have NO advice since I am in school right now, but would like to offer a warm hug and say thanks for doing your best. Good luck and hope you find some balance. Lyn

Please pray for us
Good luck!! You guys can do it!!!

A&P: Really Hard vs. Just a lot of material
Ok, Lyn's getting on a soapbox LOL: 1) EVERYONE has a different learning technique 2) You have to KNOW your style BEFORE you take A&P 3) Everyone's home and work situation is different 4) I have seem 4.0 students FREAK when they become nurses because the pt is NOT GOING BY THE BOOK!!! With that being said, you can't complain about other students when you don't know what is going on with them. If they are not truly giving it their all - then the bottom line is they will have a bigger loan in the end. I am a mom of three and a wife of an Over the road truck driver. I take the "c's" and run because then it will get me closer to getting in the program and getting my husband home more often. I hate that I really can not devote 20hrs a week to one class but my family comes first and I WILL NOT have my children resent me for blowing them off for school even it is for a better future. Ok, I'm done, I will leave the soap box for someone else!! LOL

Don't wanna always give baths, clean up feces, etc., where to work?
I know my school just started the rule that you HAVE to take the CNA course before you can even apply for nursing school. YEAH!! They had too many people drop out the first semester whe they figured out what you all ready know!! With that - I thought it was an EXCELLENT IDEA!!!! Even being a mom of three I was not sure I wanted to do this. Luckily I had such a WONDERFUL clinical experience that it gave me the confidence I needed. I kept thinking that if this were MY loved one - I would want and DEMAND the best care possible, so why not just do it?? On the other hand the student sitting next to me in class actually asked if the pts wear a SWIM SUIT for a bath!! ( I AM NOT JOKING) When she found out we had to "TOUCH THEIR PRIVATES" she RAN out of the class!!! ONE DOWN!!! LOL I see both sides - I want a solid career with decent money - BUT I also want a job that I can have a sense of accomplishment. Even if it is a simple smile from ONE patient!! Maybe I am nieve - but if I am - please do not burst my bubble!!! LOL Lyn

More mayo info, your thoughts and help!!
OK, first off - I am a student!! So nothing I say is official!! LOL I live in Rochester and associate with ALot of Mayo employees. With that being said - Mayo KNOWS that they are the best around. Not only hospital, but the ONLY game in town as far as a job. So for every ONE person actually interviewing, they have about 50 hoping to get in. SO THEY ARE CHOOSEY!!! I AM NOT DEFENDING THIS!!!! That is why I will MOVE as SOON as I finish nursing school. Mayo trains the students for MAYO. Yes, I am jaded - Mayo has such a big head that i am finding alot of the people who work there feel they are better than anyone else too!! My neighbor is a Dr there and he actually told me that they have to be so "GO MAYO" and out going that he becomes intreverted (sp?) at home. It is a big reputation to keep up. I did apply for a PCA position and when the interview was over, the head nurse walked me to the front, we hade what I thought was a nice conversation, but I was told that I did not get the job because I was too conversational and would probably talk too much. So, good luck!! I wil get off my soap box now!! LOL

Are we all old???
HI!!! Yeah, I am old too!! LOL I'm a 34yr old SAHM going back to school too!! My push for school was a wakeup call really. My hubby had a massive heart attack @34 yrs old and right then I knew I had to do something. I am really frustrated that I have already done two years of work and still have three to go. Science isn't coming back to me like I had hoped it would. It is nice to see that I am not the only one who can remember feathered hair and BonJovi when they had big hair!! LOL Good luck everyone. When ever I get frustrated I think that when i am finally done I can HONESTLY tell my kids that they can do ANYTHING if they put their mind to it!!
