  1. 1. NY (Long Island) 2. 10 yrs 3. School Nurse 4. $61,000/185 contracted days/7 hr days $47/hr extra pay for summer school (optional) 5. none 6. yes, we're part of the teacher's union, however, the union is useless when it comes to the nurses. About $80 in union dues is taken out of our pay each month. Cost of living is very high. $2400/mo for mortgage. Property tax is $11k/yr for 1/4ac. Electric is 450/mo, Cable $200+/mo, Phone $200+/mo, Gas $3.93/gal. Hubby and I live paycheck to paycheck.
  2. Hi, I am in NY and the yearly physicals are for sports. They expire the last day of the month the physical was done. For example, a child has a physical on Sep 1st, 2011, it's good till Sep 30th, 2012.
  3. I had a student sent to me because her pen exploded and her hands were covered in ink. She washed her hands in the class and it didn't come out so the teacher told her to go to the nurse!
  4. I use a temporal thermometer as well. They are great for students with down's and our special ed kids. I also use one at home on my own kids. I know others who are also pleased with these thermometers.
  5. hi tleigh, check out this site basic lung sounds
  6. Hi safarirn, You're being too hard on yourself. I check lung sounds on my known asthmatics or when a student complains of sob. If a student is afebrile, looks good and has minor complaints...they're back to class. You sound like you're doing a great job.
  7. Hi Jennylane, I work with a student with a g-tube. To vent her, I hook up the tubing to her button and attach a 60cc syringe after placing her on her back. I bring her knees up to her belly which releases excess gas. No water is put into syringe. Also, when feeding her a bolus, I will lock it if she starts to cough, but if it bubbles, I will leave it open and let it vent. When the bubbling stops, I will continue with feed. Hope this helps. Good luck with the job. I've been doing this for 5 yrs and love it!
  8. I feel so lucky. In our district we have a system called Aesop. I just go online and put it on the computer whether I need the day off because I'm sick or I want a personal day, then it's the district's responsibility to find a replacement. We currently have 3 permanent subs in the district. The perm subs assist the middle school nurses and are called if needed elsewhere. It's a great system... no phone calls are needed!
  9. While working for an ob/gyn, the md pulled a contact lens case out of a pt's lady parts. What was she thinking?
  10. I hate when the teacher plays nurse. I had a student who said "the teacher told me to come see you because she thinks I look sick" There was no fever and the student said he felt fine so I sent him back. I found out that the teacher called the student's mom to pick him up. When I questioned the teacher, she replied "I don't want anyone sick in my room because I'm pregnant"
  11. * Bartender - 8yrs* went to school for culinary arts* Deli owner 10 yrs* Bartender for another 5 yrs* Medical assistant for 2 yrs* went back to school for nursing at 42. Happy working as a school nurse!
  12. Absolutely NOT... With or without proper PPE. I would definitely be at home taking care of my kids.
  13. I was 43 when I became an LPN and 45 an RN
  14. I find it annoying too... especially when someone younger than me calls me that. The only time I use "honey" or "sweetie" is when I talk to my kids.
