I work at a rural hospital, a couple of our CNA's will sleep and 2 charge nurses will sleep (one is my boss and it usually doesn't happen unless she has done many many 12 hour nights in a row) However, I don't believe I have ever seen one of the nurses directly caring for patients sleep. A couple of times I have felt pretty sleepy, but I usually take a brisk walk down the hall or something. I don't think I can wake up at a snap and be fully functional though some people can and I envy them. Therefore for the safety of my patients I don't allow myself that quick snooze. Does anyone know how much the ADN program through EC is? How many books to you have to buy for the NC1? Just curious. I'm going to take a look at the distance learning forum, might find this info there. Thanks.

Try working as a CNA now at a children's hospital. Then you may be able to promote up. I don't always think an LPN position is an "advertised" position, but if you show good work performance they may "find" positions for you as an LPN. A fellow student/friend worked as an CNA during school at a children's hospital and now works in the ER at the same hospital as an LPN. She loves it! Just somthing to think about. Ruper

studlpnmn, I'm not sure if this is an option for you where you live, but try rural county hospitals. Small town away from the big city. Sometimes it's a little further to drive, but if you get 12 hour shifts 3 times a week it cuts down on gas needed. I am a new baby LPN. I tried a nursing home for 2 months. I felt like I was put in positions that I'm not yet qualified to handle. I did fine just like everyone said I would, but there is so much responsibility I feel like if something were to go wrong I would be the "fall nurse." I am now working on a med/surg floor of a small county hospital and LOVE it! The pay is less than LTC, but the experience and things I am learning are far and above what I would ever get at a LTC facility. Also, a LPN friend of mine works for a family care pracitice that actually has a 4 bed "mini" ER in it. She is paid more than I and is actually doing some procedures after being trained. So keep your chin up and knock on doors, make phone calls, don't just rely on the paper or internet. Many jobs aren't posted until they can't fill them by word of mouth or wall in applicants. When I posted my comment I had been reading the slams, yet every one saying they wouldn't go didn't slam those that would. I was also feeling vunerable, I'm a new baby nurse fresh out of school trying to make it in the big nurse world, I'm sure that is enough said about that. So since this is really about having PPE I should have kept my comment to myself. Thanks again. I'm going to ask my employer what their plans would be for PPE's.

I admire those that would jump in with both feet. I don't think they love their families any less. I'm saddened they think those of us that would be hesitant shouldn't be nurses. I try to live by the beliefs I have been raised by. God, Family, Job.

It's a good chance you wouldn't survive, so that makes it a whole other question. I have a daughter to take care of. Look how our government is treating us right now. I know it is better than some other places in the world, but still ..... I love being a nurse and take all precautions I can. If there were no tools for precautions it would be a definite no.

Hi acorvette, If the MA job meets your requirements, I'd take it. It "sounds" to me in your post that that is what you would like to do. The one think I thought is you said you can't "work crazy hours." I'm finding as a new LPN working in a Care and Rehab facility I work "crazy hours." It's tough to get a day postion as a new hire and I'm not sure I'm ready for the fast pace and demands of a day position just yet. I like the work of the 3-11 and 11-7, but it's "crazy hours" trying to sleep and such. Right now I'm wanting to work more 11-7 to be home with my school age daughter in the evenings. I'm working towards my RN and am looking forward to being able to have more choices that will work for me. Good Luck!!!!

mrstip, I did pass my NCLEX, I'm in Missouri. I took the test 1/28, found out that I passed on 1/30 and was offered a job on 2/1. It was a busy week. Five of my classmates have all taken their tests last week and this week. The computer shut off at 85 for 3 of them, 86 for one and 98 for another. They all passed. I know all the 50% this and 50% that and what you know and what you don't know is out there. Two of my LPN instructors and the administrator of my LPN program said they had never known of anyone failing that the computer shut off at 85 questions. They felt like you would have had to had received poor grades in school (that would have been an indicator of their knowledge) and failed most of the quesitons. With that said, I do kow how you are feeling, all of my classmates have felt or are feeling the same way. Hang in there and keep me posted ! Blessing and good thoughts to you, Ruper

Hi BetterMe, I do know that TCN is a publishing company. I have all my pre req's to do and TCN condenses all the info into 1 book to read and study for each class. I have access to a guidance advisor to help with any and all questions. (They've already earned their approval with me and my questions. ha ha) After I finish my pre reqs I will enroll with EC, but use the books provided by TCN. From what I understand the first nursing class through EC requires several books to buy. I only have one to buy from TCN. Probably the thing that really sold me was that if I take a test and fail it twice, TCN hires a tutor (they pay for) for me and pays my test fee after using the tutor. They guarantee passing. I've only just begun since I was focusing on my NCLEX up until last week. I think it just depends on the person. So far what I am seeing in my TCN books is very easy to understand and comprehend. The true test will be with my first test. Ruper

Yes, we all went to the Pearson testing center. We didn't ask, just started checking and the results were there at the 48 hour mark. The friend that found her results on Sunday said the same thing. We are in Missouri, I hope haven't given you false hope. I just know what happend for us. Good Luck! Ruper

Emerld, you are feeling exactally as I felt last Monday after taking my NCLEX. I don't think anything will make you feel different until you get your results. But it shut off on 85 for me as well as my classmate that took hers at the same time. Another classmate had taken her test the week before, it shut off at 85 and she passed as well. I think you will get good news! Does your state have the 48 hour opportunity to get results? You said you probably won't know until Wednesday. If it is 48 hours, the results should be there Monday. One classmate took her test on a Friday and found out on Sunday. So I don't think they mean "business" days. I will be looking forward to hearing your good news! Ruper

heartjules, i am also sorry for your loss. i'm sure your husband knows what all you and your daughter have done and that he is very proud of you both! i know this will sound a little crazy, but wed. afternoon i was at walmart and on an end cap were some flowers that were marked down. there was a large bunch of purple iris's (my mom's favorite color was purple and she had purple iris's all along the back of their house) sticking out from the rest and the flowers were even in an odd place, not in the flower section. as soon as i saw them i knew i had to buy them and visit the cemetary. it was really cold and the wind was blowing so strong, but it didn't matter, i had me a little talk with mom. maybe it is just wishful thinking, but i believe "little" things like that happen just to remind us and let us know they are with us. on friday, i went to put my application in for a job and ended up leaving the place with an lpn position with orientation next wed. the 6th. today i got my letter that is a temporary work permit. it was a busy week! i wish you much luck with your nclex. the best advise i can give is to read your questions and make sure you understand what they are asking. that is a huge key! many blessings to you and i look forward to hearing from you about your results. ruper, lpn :balloons: :redpinkhe :w00t:

first let me say, i took my nclex-pn on monday, found out i passed on wednesday and was offered a job this morning! yeah!!!! i'm so very excited and can't believe it, i'm a nurse ! ! ! ! okay, that aside. i have spent many many days and nights in hospitals with my mom and dad. the hospitals mostly only hired rn's, but you know what, we could almost always tell the rn's that had been either cna's or lpn's prior to getting their rn. their bedside manner always gave it away. i'm not saying the rn's were bad because there were some pretty great ones, but there was just something about the ones with the prior "experience." so some day when i'm an rn, i hope that the same can be said about me. blessings, ruper

I hear in California it takes about 3 weeks to get your results. I only see that through the postings on this site. I feel the pain of all those that test in CA. I live in Missouri. I took my test on Monday, it shut off at 85 questions and I found out Wednesday morning that I passed. The instructors at my school told me that it is a most rare occurance for someone to fail with 85 questions. You would have had to not done well throughout the test. So I'm thinking you are pretty good ! I wish I knew a way for you to find out quicker. Maybe someone will post some helpful info. Hang In There!!!! Ruper

i passed !!!!!! i was so nervous checking my results. my daughter hadn't left for school yet so, she, my dad (he lives with us) and i were standing around the computer. i don't know who was crying more me or my dad. i lost my mom almost 2 years ago and i wish more than anything she could have been standing here too. i know she has been watching over me. thank you all who responded, it is amazing how much you helped. now it's hitting the streets to find a job!!!!!! :w00t:

Hello, I was wondering if anyone has or knows of someone taking the NCLEX-PN, computer shuts off at 85 questions and they fail? I know all the reasoning behind pass/fail, I'm just curious. OKay, I just took my NCLEX-PN, it shut off at 85 questions and I am feeling .... heck I don't know what I'm feeling. I don't feel like I did that great, yet I know I didn't miss every question. The next 2 days will be torture. Any input on your experiences? Thanks, Ruper that's how I'm feeling.

I really didn't know this, how interesting. Guess it would depend on the wound, stage, etc. Would the responsibility if something went wrong with the wound be under the nurse or the CNA? Ruper

Butterfly, I took it from your post that you really hadn't had a chance to rechange the dressing before the doc came in. It sounded to me like you went to speak with the charge nurse and cool down a bit (which could all happen in about 5 minutes). For this tech to do this after 10 years of experience, she has probably done other things that weren't in her scope of practice. hmmmmm. Attention to her acts was over due. Sounds like the second situation was handled as it should have been. I have seen many hospital employees without their name tags even though it is policy to have one on. If the tech acted as though she was the nurse for this patient ..... she's gone! Ruper
