  1. I was in the same boat last year when I graduated...I finally found a job that is about an hour away from my house. No one wants to hire a new grad because it takes a seasoned nurse off the floor to train the new one...It sucks...been there done that...I wish you all the best and keep applying...It will work out.
  2. I work at North Oaks and wanted to work at Slidell, but when I graduated they had a hiring freeze. I did clinicals there for post partum/nursery and liked it alot. I live out in Slidell and the drive to Hammond is kinda getting old, ya know. Has Slidell gone to computerized charting by any chance? That is one of the things that I dislike about my job is that not only do we have narrative charting, but flowsheets, skin sheets, patient needs list, etc. They are planning on adding some more...I feel it to be redundant and I am over it...Thanks for the input.
  3. Hi...Just wondering if anyone knows anyone that works/worked at this hospital. Is there computerized charting, day/night shifts, how long is the orientation for, etc. I am working almost an hour away from where I live and would like to get closer to my neck of the woods. This place always interested me, but I really don't know anything about it when it comes to working environment. Thanks for any input. Have a wonderful day.

I have seen a doctor give it for hiccups...Has anyone seen this?
  5. Yes...The pt felt that if she were to receive anyones blood, she would receive their sins.
  6. Hi...Still a new nurse under a year. Finally experience my 1st patient who refused to have a blood transufion even though her H/H came back with panic levels. Because of her refusal, the doctors are basically treating her with iron and oxygen. I did give one dose of Procrit 10,000 units sq. The family has threatened to call the head of the hospital, etc. because they feel that the docotors aren't doing enough. The hematologist is the one that ordered the iron and oxygen, and stated it would be a long process before her H/H would come up. What more can be done? Thanks...everyday is a learning experience.
  7. I understand that and do respect their decision. My question is what are the other alternatives that can be done.

  9. You could call around New Orleans and the surrounding areasin Louisiana.
  10. Is there anyway to retake the semester? Several nurses that I am friends with failed that particular semester and they were able to retake it and finally passed. I am sorry that this happened to you, but dont give up. If you do apply to another program, find out 1st if they will accept your grades from the 1st semester. You wouldnt want to start completely over if you didnt have to do so. Keep me informed and good luck.
  11. Is this the Gulport Hospital program that you are referencing?
  12. Thanks...that makes sense.
  13. Can you tell me why we are pushing lasix after a unit....still learning here.
  14. What do you think about the surgery unit?
  15. Okay so you take out every other one and then what do you do? If all staples need to be taken out and they wanted the strips to be used?
  16. we saw some subcutaneous tissue...no infection...but again what is the proper way to doing it? I lost most of my nursing books during Katrina and the ones I have now dont address it...
  17. No...he called and yelled at the charge nurse that we need to be taught the proper way....The lead nurses and I went back and they pulled the skin together ( about a 3cm split) and then used the steri strips to keep the area secure. I hung in and out of her room to watch her to make sure that no additional splitting or drainage started....but I would love to know what the best or right technique is...dont go back to work for a couple of days and could really use the info....thanks
  18. Well I thought I was going on the previous one that I had witnessed. But I do make it a point to ask all the time on things. I guess I just felt that this would be the same process.....Boy, was I wrong...feel really bad.
  19. Hey yall....still a newbie on the surgery floor...I made a HUGE mistake yesterday and have been crying all day about it. I was to remove staples from and abdominal incision that was ota. I wiped the area with the benzo sticks, started to remove the staples and then when I go to just about the last 6, the patients incision started to split open. OMG!!!! I thought I was to put the strips on last, but was informed by the doctor that I really messed up and wouldnt give me the opportunity to ask how I was supposed to do it. I didnt learn this in school, and the only one I watched that staples were ever taken out of had maybe one or two sterstrips applied in areas that werent so secure looking. Can anyone help me out? I am so mortified, I hope that I havent prolonged this patients healing process..
  20. Thank you so very much for your input...I tell myself with time I will pick up speed and get better at the whole process...Everyone says it takes a good year to find your "groove"....ughh 10 more months to go...lol...thanks:yawn:
  21. Hi...I am a new nurse (2months) and I work on a busy post op unit. I seem to be so busy that I am staying late after my shift just to chart. My hospital does not use computers for charting as of yet. There are 4 sheets that we must document on for each patient, and narrative charting which seems to be the thing that keeps me late every shift. I have asked for input from my fellow nurses about time management, etc to help me get faster with the paperwork. I dont even take my lunch break at times, but seem to always stay late to catch up. Is this just the "newbie" in me, or do other nurses find that they often stay late to document? I am feeling very insecure at this point...thanks for listening.
  22. Thank you....Just wanted to make sure.:wink2:
  23. Hi...This might be a silly question, but I have and LPN license and just became an RN (got my license a month ago). Do I need to keep my LPN license up to date, or do I just let it go?
  24. That is what I was thinking when I put 13.
  25. Well I did get 12.5gtts but I rounded to 13...I guess I do remember somethings from schoo...hee hee
