  1. Oh yes the no fault absenteeism policy ours is no more than 3 days in 3 months and then it is wiped clean. I was sick in January asthma attack with PSVT had doctors note missed 5 days all started from contracting the flu at the facility. I was written up and my yearly eval was docked for excessive absences. I was mad. I found that I was covered under FMLA for those absences they do not count towards their policy. Not sure if you would qualify under this being perdiem since you have to have so many hours put in and I am not sure what your son is sick with if it would qualify. Just a thought for the future and it is part the employers responsibility to tell you if you qualify however I have found that not to be true.
  2. Creatine kinase myocardial band as for your abbreviations on your first post they are all correct.
  3. I would go to the Canadian immigration website for info on a student visa http://www.cic.gc.ca I do know that Canada does not have a 2 year program for RN anymore it is 4 years.
  4. I currently work the weekends right now I am transitioning from LPN to RN so it works great for me. The down side is not having the weekends with family they work and go to school during the week. I find the weekends are a little more relaxed at least where I work.
  5. We have a combination of all rehab, chronically ill, and long term residents. Most nursing homes have a pharmacy they deal with to deliver their meds the pharmacy we use is a couple of hours away 24 hour service.
  6. I work in LTC and most of our orders are telephone orders especially on the weekend. As far as sending someone to ER being a nursing decision it isn't yes we may feel it is appropriate to send but ultimately we need an order to send.
  7. I lived in Canada so I have seen their universal healthcare up close and personal. I can't tell you how good it was to know that if I got sick I would be able to go to the doctor or the hospital and not have to worry about paying and you stayed until you were able to go home you weren't rushed out because someone without a medical degree said you had to go. I could focus on getting better it is different when you have a chronic health condition the worry is always there. Canada still has private insurance it comes through their employers it pays for the extras that the provincial healthcare system doesn't also prescriptions drugs are covered under private insurance however government has a hand in it that is why their drugs are so much cheaper. I know nothing is free Canada pays higher taxes for their healthcare system. Why couldn't we have some sort of monthly premium for all possibly based on income for basic healthcare on the lines of the Medicare system. We could still keep private insurance for those who could afford it through employers. There just has to be an answer what good is all the technology that we have if people can't afford it.
  8. It really is a personal decision. I work in LTC and we get very close to the residents my first death hit me hard I was holding his hand and I thought I would go to the viewing. The day of I couldn't do it I could not open all of those emotions again. I did however go to one of my res viewings I wasn't with him when he passed and had gotten to know his wife very well I went to show her support. A card is completely appropriate you just need to do what you feel is right for you.
  9. From what I found it used to be used during the wars as an antiseptic because of the acidity it helped kill bacteria to prevent infection it is recommended that you only use your own urine someone elses urine could cause problems just what I found.
  10. I felt the same way you did when I was in school had a bad experience in my geri clinical; however you will find good and bad anywhere you go in any profession. LTC is different than the hospital I understand more now that I work LTC you have 30 res to take care of seriously understaffed and it can be quite stressful don't take it personal it is not. Focus on learning take it all in and turn the negative into a positive learning experience we all handle stressors differently don't let a couple bad experiences deter you from your goal being the best nurse you can be. Good luck!
