Dead Babies...To Get It Off My Chest
This post really hits home right now. My son is on Cocaine and he is shaking and hitting his daughter. She is six months old, but she was a preemie. She is a really good baby and I feel helpless. I have notified social services and the military. My son is in the Army. I am looking into getting a lawyer, but I really don't know what my chances are of getting the baby away from mom and dad. I feel like something really bad is going to happen. All of this on top of nursing school!!

Difficult family members and friends, what do yo do?
I am wondering what do you do when family members give the patient things they are on doctors orders not to have. Example: NPO , bedrest only, no stimulation, 32 week pregnant preeclamptic mom. Family member and friends giving her cigerettes, drinks, and watching for the nursin while the pt goes to the bathroom to smoke. How does your facitlity handle this? What is the nurses role?

Life and Nursing School.
I can relate to this so much. It seems that things always happen when I go to nursing school. I am getting ready to start the RN program at a local cc. I am currently an LPN that has been a sahm for the last fifeteen years. I am going back to finish my dream. This means big changes in our life. I am currently homeschooling three of my seven children. My eighteen year old decided that mom and dad where too hard on him and moved in with his married sister. All we wanted him to do was get a job and pay his insurance. He is out of school and we can't afford the extra $500/ 6 months. My twenty-one year old is still at home , but thinking of getting married soon. My fifteen year old has to see a pediactic cardiologist next week for an irregular heart beat, dizziness, and chest pain. My husband is an over the road truck driver and can't be here through the week to help out. It was this way when I went to LPN school. It seems that a lot of things go wrong when we are already stressed to the max. But we can all do this. It depends on how much we want to reach our goal. I miss nursing. I am ready to go back because my children are all older and I can't see myself being home alone for the rest of my life. Just remember we can do this!!

Need advice, pls!!
I have taken him to the doctor. They did an EKG and a lot of blood work. All the tests came back normal. He is going to get an ultrasound of his thyroid and a consult with the ped cardioligist. Yes, it is scary. I wasn't really looking for medical advice just support. The cardioligist wasn't going to be in the area until the 21st of next month, so they asked me to go to Louisville. I will be taking him a week from this Thurs. Until his appointment I am going to take his vitals one to two times a day both sitting and standing. I will then have something more concrete to give the doctor. Do you think this is a good idea? It seems his vitals change quite a bit from sitting to standing. Sitting: Pulse 70 b/p 125/56 Standing: Pulse 100 b/p 100/70. The doctor was hoping that he was dehydrated , but then all the blood work came back normal. I think that is why she wanted me to take him to the cardiologist earlier. Did I mention that heart problems run on my husbands side of the family? I mean his dad, mom, and one brother has had heart attacks. His dad and brother both had MI in their early forties. All of my father-in-laws brothers and sisters have had heart problems and MI's when they were young. Some of them died in their thirties because of heart failure. That means twelve out of twelve siblings have had heart problems, heart attacks, and heart failure. Do you see why I am concerned? Again, I am not looking for medical advice just support.

When is a difference in standing and sitting pulse normal?
I am just wondering what are the perameters of normal in the difference between standing and sitting pulse. Is it the difference that causes concern or the just the actual numbers? Also, what are some of causes of a increases pulse rate when standing?

Need advice, pls!!
I am an LPN going back to school for my RN. I haven't worked in several years and am a little rusty on my skills. Anyway, the question is about my son. ( I am making him an appointment today, BTW) MY son is fourteen years old. A couple of years ago he started complaining of chest pain. He would climb a big hill by our house and then get dizzy and have chest pain. I was monitoring him and was going to take him to the doctor. He stopped complaining about it; I forgot about it and didn't take him. Now, he has been complaining about dizziness followed by headaches. I listened to his HR last night. It seem to be very irregular ( remember my skills aren't the best). His heart rate is 104/min. His rythm seems very off to me. It speeds up, slows down, and skips beats. While listening to it last night it got so fast at one point and took me by surprise that I couldn't count the beats. I asked him if he still had chest pain and he said yes. I don't know why he hasn't been telling me. I am really worried about this and am looking for information about what this could be. I would really like someone to tell me that it isn't any big deal, but that might not be the case. Any words of encouragement, words of warning, or other information will be appreciated. BTW, I live in a small town that doesn't have the best doctors or other facilities and would like to know whether I really need to be aggressive with this and push for an EKG and cardialogist consult or not.

How to stay in shape???!!
I am also determined to get in shape before nursing school in august. I lost 90 lbs several years ago and have now gained back some of it. I need to lose fourty pounds. I am just wondering how I will fit in exercise into school. During prereq. I got out of the exercise habit. I am now working my way back up to an hour of vigorous walking a day. If I couldn't fit in exercise during prereq. I don't know how I will fit it in during nursing school.

Do I have a chance?
I just talked to a friend of mine. She told me to just go get a job as an LPN because the amount of applicants to the local cc is 600 applicant for 40 positions. The other college two hours away is 2000 applicants for 90 postitions. I have a 4.0 gpa, a 99 percentile on the NLN, and am a LPN. I think I have a fair chance, but she acted like I won't be able to get in and I may as well just go get a job. What do you all think? What does a 4.0 get you? Do I have a chance?

Nurses - Leading your subordinates (Nurse Aides, Nurse Techs, Med Aides)
This may be the rules of the facility, but licensed nurses are supervisers of unlicensed nursing staff. Unlicensed nursing staff such as Cna are working under the LPN's or Rn's license and the LPN has to work under an RN. Licensed staff are to delegate either directly or indirectly to other unlicensed nursing staff but the licensed nurse is responsible for the patient care. "Are you aware that indirect delegation (such as the performance of tasks listed in a nurse aide job description) does not alter the responsibility of the nurse for appropriately assigning and supervising the unlicensed persons performing the tasks? "(KBN)

Health food store giving medical advice
I go in a local health food store every once in a while. A friend of mine works in there. I have noticed that people come in and ask the people that work there for medical advice. The cashiers tell them what is wrong with them, what herbs or vitamins to take, and give them their advice on what to do. These people have no medical background. They may know about herbs, but something just doesn't seem right. They have no idea if the person coming in for advice has some kind of medical problems such as diabetes, heart disease ect. What do you all think about this?

Need help with Insulin's role and glucose uptake?
I asked him about it and he said that it is used only for storage and not for utilization. I also asked about insulin resistance and he said it must be that a person can't store glucose and then that would be more glucose in the blood causing blood sugar levels to go up. Maybe I need to talk to him again or should I just let it slide .

Need help with Insulin's role and glucose uptake?
I am so confused about this. I know that I am making it harder than what it is but... I am in A&P 2 and we are covering the endocrine system. We talked about insulin yesterday. I was under the impression that insulin helped in the uptake of glucose from the bloodstream into certain target cells such as muscle cells where it is used and utilized as energy and then if there is any excess glucose it is converted into glycogen in the liver and stored in the adipose tissue. My instructor said that insulin is only used in storage and doesn't help the cell uptake glucose for utilization. This is driving me nuts. I keep researching and finding things that seem like I am right. Is insulin only used in storage of glucose? Or does it help in the uptake and utiliazation of glucose by muscle tissue?

Difference between LPN school and Rn school?
For all of you that have went from an LPN to an Rn , what are the differences in school? I am currently an LPN going back for my RN. I have been inactive for a long time. I have been a SAHM. What are the differences in your experience from LPN to Rn?

can LPN take verbal telephone orders?
I have been inactive for a while and was just wondering after reading some of the posts on this board. Can a LPN take verbal telephone orders and call a MD with a status change or is this out of the scope of practice? I used to be evening charge nurse in LTC facility and did the above all the time. I would take telephone orders, send patients to hospital, call MD for status change or when a resident fell ect. If this isn't allowed currently with a LPN license then we aren't anything more than glorified Medicine Aids. I do believe that I have the skills as an LPN for the assessing a patient and calling MD ect. I was just currious. Thank you and help in this area.

"Are you an RN OR LPN ????"
I am currently a LPN going back for my RN after being inactive for 13 years. When a family member is in the hospital I don't tell the nurses that I have any experience in nursing or any medical knowlege. I just watch and ask appropriate questions. Sometimes they catch on and sometimes they don't. Most of the time the nurse's name tags are on backward and as a patient you can not tell whether they are a CNA, LPN, or RN. I found this very frustrating. I never have asked the creditials of the nurse doing the care, but you sure can't tell just by the name tag. I really wanted to ask why their name tag was on backwards though. There has only been one hospital that really intoduced themselves and wrote their name on the board ect. They also had their name tags on the right way. I felt a lot better about the care at this hospital than at the one where all the nurses hid their name tags. I didn't feel better about the care because it was an all RN staff because it wasn't. I felt better because it wasn't like they were trying to hide who they were. I knew that an RN was doing my son's IV and not a CNA coming and doing something out of their scope of practice.

point system
Who's school admits by the point system? How does it work at your school? My school admits by the point system. I have added by points and I have 50-55 points out of a possible 90. They said in the nursing conference that the average is for admit is usually 47 but last year the admits started at 51. I am hoping to get admitted into the program. What do you all think?

8 Weeks of training does NOT make you a nurse!!
I live in Kentucky and it is against the law to claim to be a nurse and not be, even when you are not falsely employed as a nurse. I was reading on the BON website and you have to at least hold a valid license or a retired license to even call yourself a nurse. I am currently not licensed in the state of Kentucky but I have a license in the state of Indiana and it is really not lawful for me to tell anyone I am a nurse here until I get my license trasferred.

Burnt out Housewife/Stay at Home Mom Excited and Scared to Death to Start School.
I too am a SAHM returning to school after 14 years at home. I am also a homeschool mom. I am taking some more prereqs. this spring and will hopefully get into the RN program next fall. I really enjoy the break that college brings. All of my children are older now and it just seems like the right time to do something different. It may be that I am going through a mid-life crisis too. I really don't know. I still am homeschooling four of my seven children but one is a Senior. The others are independent learners and can do a lot on their own. I also still garden, make my own bread, ect. This is my life and I love it , but there is something else missing. Before I was a SHAM I was a LPN. I also homeschooled then. The children were much smaller though. I know how demanding things can be. Several months ago I took care of my Mother- in -Law after a really bad illness. I relized then that I really missed nursing. Since then I have been working on getting my LPN license trasfered from Indiana to Kentucky and I have been taking pre-reqs for my RN. I just want to encourage you to not turn from the Lord. The Lord Jesus loves you. Many of my friends do not agree with me going to school and also don't believe in women working outside of the house, but my husband and I have prayed about this and I am going on with school. I some times feel alone but I know the Lord is will me. Be encouraged.

Have you ever reported your coworker to the supervisor and got the person fired
This happened to me once. It really upset me because I didn't intend to get the other nurse in trouble. This is the story. I was evening charge nurse at a LTC facility. I came to work one evening and received report from the day nurse. This nurse stated that so and so's G-tube has been plugged since she came on shift at 7 am but she hadn't had a chance to get it unplugged. It just so happened that this patient also was a diabetic. She had not had any feedings or meds all day. Needless to say I was really upset. We didn't have any new lines or tubing or anything on our unit, so I ran to the other side of the facilitity and got what I needed. I put all new tubing ect up and got the feeding going in less that ten minutes. I watched patient closely and monitored blood sugar levels ect. I reported the incident to the on coming shift . When I came in the next day the DON took me aside and asked me what happened. I told her and then she informed me that they were terminating this nurse. The nurse was there at the time and started yelling at me and threatening me. She had to excorted out of the building by the administrator. I never intended to get her fired. I was only thinking about the patient at the time.

I am stressing out here!!!
I just took the NET. I found the hardest part was the science. You really need to know the conversion of the temperatures, like Kelvin to Celcius. Also know some of the terms for electricty. The math wasn't that difficult for me but math is my strong subject. Make sure you know how to do porportions and percents. I found their was a lot of these type of problems. There were a few Algebra problems. Know how to find the solution to two equations. Good Luck
