Medication error
Haunted; What a fantastic story. I would not like to work with such a nurse either. Those two hours she came in early should have pointed out to everyone her life was sadly lacking in many areas. I hope you are working with a better bunch of nurses now. We all make mistakes, hopefully most are not too serious and we learn from them. Have a good weekend.

This sounds like guilt from lack of action is being passed onto your shoulders. Just let things role downhill. It will be their turn soon. I know the patients and their families appreciated your care.

I think I've heard it all
I love the shirt, wonder what they have concerning cats? Our dog age a lortab and a valium once, hubby dropped them and dog was too quick. He was gorked out for a couple of days. Vet was angry but amused too. Strange things do happen.

The Pyxis man can be so wrong. Try to remain calm, this will work out. I do suggest you write down exactly what happened and how you rectified the event. Hello nads; I would say the nurses at your LTC facility have taken advantage of you if they are never available to help with the lifting or turning of patients. Here, it is part of everyone's job to assist with that type of activity. Good luck with nursing school. Keep us posted on your progress.

Student loan repayment from hospitals in SW Ohio???
Have you talked with your school's financial resource office? There is some sort of program for loan repayment for working in areas that are underserved. I do not have the particulars but maybe they could be helpful with information. Good luck. I agree that the loan repayment programs you mentioned seem generous to most of us.

Hi Noryn, Yes, we all have been threatened with "show up or else" meetings on time off, then go and hear a bunch of same old issues that management intends to do nothing about. I am glad to hear your job is so good. I was referring specifically to our state being in the lowest 3 for overall employee benefits, not associated with national or international companies. While the workplace is becoming more and more a mine field for workers, it is sad that employees feel threatened to take vacations, sick time, press for equal treatment as guranteed by federal law, and many other issues that this study said our working people are too timid to press for. Here in WV the old saying "if you have a job, don't rock the boat" is more true than ever I guess. I know of one nurse right now who has had to fight for benefits he paid for because he became ill with cancer, was off for treatment, was called to come to work while he was in the hospital for minor surgery, and was fired for not reporting to work. His lawyer is confident he will win the case and get more money that his actual benefits would have paid, but the stress of the situation caused him to relaspe for several weeks and has certainly caused problems. This left a bad taste in my mouth for this particular facility, one with nationwide facilities. I hope you continue to have a blessed and happy day. I will be gone for several weeks, so keep smiling.

How do you inventory pt valuables?
Most units have an inventory sheet listing different objects and you simply write down the number of "shirts, socks, underwear that person has". The sheet should always be marks/labeled with patients name. If there are objects that are not allowed on unit them send them to lockup or keep them in designated area until a family member is leaving and give them to family to take home. There should be a note you can attach to chart signed by family they recieved these items. I list on the inventory list if something is damaged, torn, or if clothes are dirty and need washing.

Scrubs or street clothes
Know the policy of the unit. Some units demand street clothes only, others allow for a combination, others scrubs. This should have been explained in the interview. One thing, wear good shoes with good traction and support, no matter the unit, feet need to be taken care of because you do more walking than you ever expected to do.

Unlicensed personnel calling in prescriptions?!
This is so funny to me because I spent 3 hours on the phone on Friday trying to get the pharmacy, the nurse, and the doctors to get hubby's Rx right before we leave for a month to visit daughter up north. Here in WV, I know less than licensed personal call in the RX's, so I know there are lots of mistakes. I shudder to think of what would have happened to hubby if I did know the correct meds, doses, and how he is to take them. I know there must be several patients who are mistreated because of these mistakes. The problem is how to fix it? Some doctors here just do not do as adequate a job as needed when writing RX's and keeping records. Hard to believe, well just make a visit and see for yourself.

Employee of the month yet written up 4 insubordination and put on 60days probation.
This place sounds like a facility that I worked at. The stories I could tell! Sometimes we just have to decide enough is enough and hit the door. I was the most "honored" nurse on the floor for patient care, new techniques learned, charting, and the doctors appreciated my input, but in the end I quit/was terminated when I caught a CNA putting false VS,I/O, and having sex with BF in supply room not once but 3 times. Each time I was told the problem was being worked on, finally I had to refuse to work with her, she was retained and I was on the street. Later she was caught stealing money from a patient by the NM who happened to be a friend of the patient. I do not regret leaving this place. I sleep better. Look for another job and get out of there, it will save you trouble, stress, and improve your life.

Policy changes in many institutions do not require the nurse to empty a container at the end of the shift as long as she has a total of the output.

That Mom needs to be educated quickly on these meds and just how abnormally, normal most 3 year olds act daily. Example: 3 yo male, loved to wear silk, played with dolls, sang and danced often at home. Fast forward 25+years, 6'2",220 lbs, loves football, fishing, hunting, has wife, kids, and dares pictures of these activities to be shown to teenage son who knows "Dad" is badest dude around. LOL. Some people are so sure the doctor knows best they will not use good sense.

Rnpatrick, like the way you think, but reality is reality. Managers often just want the bonus and know staff will keep on keeping on until stress level reaches a point no longer tolerated, several will quit to be replaced by cheaper help.

Anyone sporting a beard?
Facial hair should be neat, clean and trimmed. Hair on head should be clean, neat and as long as you want it to be. Hair or lack of hair has nothing to do with how good a nurse a person may or may not be.

Dress for interview
Business casual, clean hair, light aftershave, nice, clean nails, clean shoes with socks that are approiate. I like to see a twinkle in the eye too. It keeps other people guessing. LOL! Good luck.

Since the power that be decided I would have to work for a living, not be blessed with a silver-spoon existance, I work to eat and pay bills. Like another poster said, sometimes you just suck it up and do it.

Questions about Ohio
Hello, No one seems to be answering your question regarding your ADN. While I do not work or live in Ohio, I can speak from experience regarding the degree. A BSN is the coming thing, it will be the essential basis for practice in a few years, more schools are adopting their programs to BSN degrees. That being said, have you contacted any facilities to get a feel for what they want and how they are proceeding to get the staffing they need? Not everyone is able to go to school for 4 years for the BSN, facilities know this, many are willing to hire a ADN, give assistance with scheduling and fees to allow that ADN to obtain the higher degree. Of course they will require some type of committment from you, but if you are satisfied with the facility, then the time will pass quickly. Pick an area you are interested in living, contact the HR department, ask for information regarding the facility and the area, search online for newspapers and read them from time to time regarding news of the area. I agree that Cincy is beautiful and growing, so is Columbus. Cleveland is still caught between the old industrial city and a new technology , but it is still vital. (Just too cold for me in the winters.) No one can really give you the total answers to your questions, that will require work and searching on your part, but I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised with the results. I was really depressed to hear WV is once again among the lowest states when it comes to benefits for employees. Not surprised, but very sad to think we are so underserved. Do you think the facility where you work gives you a good, economical benefit package? What do you like best? What is a rip-off? What would you like to see changed? Is there a good chance that benefits for your facility will improve if enough employees ask for something better? New SIL just called and told me he is getting a COL raise of 9% over the new 3 years, that does not include his merit raises, he works for the Feds, but that is an unattainable raise here. So what do you think? Give me some info, are we being cheated? :smackingf

Moving to Morgantown
Hi Chrissy No advice, just wanted to wish you luck on the move. I would bet the move there will be much like any other move, takes time to learn your way around, where to shop and get the deals, good places to eat, finding a church, and medical care. The only thing I can think that will be a real problem is the influx of students every semester, finding a place to live will be harder since there will be competion. I am sure you are planning on working at Ruby, so I bet there is a person in HR who can be of assistance if you get in touch with the HR dept. there and ask for some info. How about getting in touch with the chamber of commerce, they are good sources of info on the area, and do not forget about talking to a police officer. My daughter once found a apartment because a policewoman led her to the complex and told her it was the safest, cleanest, cheapest, and quietest place for blocks. Anyway, good luck and let us know what happens.

Need advice... may relocate to KY
Would it be possible to take a short trip to Lexington to check things out first hand? Would you have to live in that area or would within an hour or two be sufficient? Did you call the BON for info? State of Ky for info on area? I am sure there would be a culture shock moving there from Fla. Good luck.

Agree with other posters, talk to another advisor, one who has been at college for awhile, or better, the head of the program. If you pay for a class, can get it scheduled accordingly, I see no reason to be told you cannot retake a class. Plenty of people do it everyday. Maybe this advisor was afraid you would not do well again and get an even lower grade. No insult intended, just a thought.
