Should Nurses attend patient funerals
I have attended many funerals of former patients. The one I remember best was a 14mo old child who had been in our long term facility since just a few days after she was born. There was nobody there but the immediate family and those of us from the facility who could make the 4hr round trip to be there. The young parents were very thankful that we came and it gave us closure. We had all come to love this child like it was one of our own. Also, when my Grandmother died last year many of her nurses from the nursing home came to the funeral home. All of my family was extremely thankful that they came.

Has anyone ever had this problem with Reglan?
You will want it listed in your chart as an allergy/adverse reaction and tell your pharmacist to list it in their files as well so that you don't have this happen again.

What Is Your Most Gross, Yucky, Disgusting Nursing Horror Story?
My latest would be the woman who came into Med/Surg with UNTREATED Breast CA. She had been sent home the day before because there was no longer anything we could do for her and she wanted to die at home. Well, it must have been a long drive to get home because she stayed that night in a hotel where she fell and landed on the floor chest first. The CA had eaten to the outside and there were a bunch of "blisters" on the breast which burst when she fell. There were huge open, draining wounds to the breast now which we had to "dress" with chux pads...These were the only things that would fit. Just layered chux ans towels over the breast. We had to keep her in a Resp isolation room because of the stench alone and you could still smell the rotting flesh in the hallway everytime the door was opened. By the time I came on, she had become unconcious without obvious signs of pain, though we did have Roxinol ordered for her. This poor woman died later that same day and I called my doctor for a mammogram the next day. It really scared me. This CA had been caught early enough, but she had refused treatment.

Has anyone ever had this problem with Reglan?
Phenergan is much worse for causing this, but Reglan will too. I just loved it when I was working Med/Surg and ER would bring in a new admit with report saying...90yrs old, we gave her Demerol and Phenergan IVP and she is FREAKING...Have Fun Y'all. AAAUUUGGGHHH!!!!! But to get back to the subject, YES Reglan can cause this with some people and even with the benadryl it will sometimes take awhile for it to wear off.

Question-how far do you travel for work daily?
1 1/4 hrs each way, I don't mind the drive too much. I just listen to the radio, CD's, and Audio Books the whole way.

Has anyone ever heard of this? Can you give me some information on it if you have.
I have seen it before also, in a LTC patient who had long term indwelling cath. Pt also had reoccurent infections and whenever he had another infection, he would get extremely confused and start pulling on catheter, causing further splitting of the member. Doc said this was from erosion and the pulling combined.

Can anyone recommend a stethoscope?
Basically, it's that the Cardiology III is a bit PRICEY!!!!! If you can afford to buy it now and can keep it on your person at all times during clinicals, fine. But they seem to "grow legs" really quick.

Can anyone recommend a stethoscope?
I recieved a Littman Cardiology II SE when I graduated from nursing school. It was a gift from my brother and his family. I loved it, but so did someone else evidently as it "Sprouted Legs" as someone else put it. I just bought a Cardiology III today and am keeping it on my person at all times. These are wonderful steths, but better for after you graduate. The Littman Lightweight is a good one for school, not as pricey, but keep a nametag on it anyway just in case...

Bossy Unit Clerks
Oh, really? They were fine? What was pt #1's chest pain level yesterday? What was pt #2's respiratory rate yesterday? What was pt #3's Blood sugar yesterday? AND, just why do you not have the same assignment today that you had yesterday? Maybe we should switch assignments and you can take care of all of these "FINE" patients...

not documented, not done. what does this mean?
Not only that, but document as if your notes were going to be read by a prosecuting attorney in a court of law in a year or two...

What do you do to get past the 2am slump
Jolt is a soda that has three times the sugar and caffiene than other sodas. If you want to see me literally climbing the walls, just give me some of that stuff. Mountain Dew and Big Red sodas have alot of sugar and caffiene too.

Anyone involved in a lawsuit?
If this happened over a year ago, then I don't think you could be expected to remember exactly what happened. Just go by what you charted. I have had more experienced nurses tell me to chart as if that note is going to end up in court a year or so from now. In other words, document...document...document.

What do you carry your pens, tape, scissors, etc in?
All I have to carry with me is 2 blue pens, unit keys keyring, and med-room keyring. Not to mention change for the soda machine. I keep my scissors in my bag in the med-room, I work Psych so can't have anything in my pocket that can be used as a weapon. 2 pens because I can't seem to keep them for long and I do not like the ones they provide here so I bring my own.
