Law enforcement to nursing
Ya I'll need al the luck I can get. When you get the golden hand shake in the only job you ever prepared for and now have to go back out into the world and find a new one, man it sucks. All my aunts are nurses and my lil brother whos account this was, is a R.T., so I have lots of help but unlike all of them, this wasn't my first choice. I just hope I like it as much as I think I will!!!!!!!

Scope of practice
Can a pulmonary care nurse run vents, or does it still have to be a R.T.? Or is up to that hospitals guidelines? Today at work the Physician ordered different vent settings via in house telephone and the R.T. was at lunch and so a pulmonary care nurse, from the respiratory department came down and made the changes. I mean no one said anything, heck the patients nurse said hey thanks for coming down!!

Hello all, I am a 31 yr old male from so.cal, I am giving considerable thought to a lvn program, in hopes of bridging to a R.N. program, Is this a wise choice? My situation demands I work full-time, but I did find some part time LVN programs. I have aunts who are nurses but both were traditional students, right out of H.S. so not much experience in other methods of achieving my goal. Any insight would be appreciated!!! THANKS Oh and I was curious while sitting with the some of the nurses in the cafeteria of the hospital I work , they were talking about there paychecks, and saying so, so has a $38,000 lead on the Nurse practioner for the year. I always thought the N.P. was the highest paid? Anyhow I don't know what he does but I can tell you his badge letters. I am fairly new to the hospital and I sure wasn't gonna ask...lol But his badge reads like this His name, MSN,CRNA

Why the salary difference?
I know everyone has there own reasons for choosing there profession and money may not be the driving factor, I'm new to the healthcare world and I admit I'm sure I have misrepresentation about alot of stuff. Heck I didn't even know what a CRNA was till I worked there and the DDS contracted one to do my sons teeth. I'd love to be a nurse practioner someday but right now I got to make it through RT school!!!!!!

Why the salary difference?
At my hospital which is a 430 room district hospital and I only know about my Hospital which is located in california. I was talking to our nurse practioner and our PA-C and they were going over there w-2's but how come the CRNA made more them both of them with less hours actually he just wasnt right ahead he wuped both of them good. I thought NP/PA's are the next highest paid behind doctors?

Are RRT's NRP certified?
Is NRP/PALS given during the two year RT course or is it something one usually picks up outside the program via another route of training or class?
-
Are RRT's NRP certified?
Yes, all of the RT's in the nicu which also handles Lnd can intubate they can not work alone or be primary until the Doctor signs them off on intubation and other certain neonatal functions, they can only respond as a back up RT to calls until signed off by the DR. Are Nicu as 3 RT's and if theres a 4th it's usually someone from the adult side in training for neonatal.
-
Are RRT's NRP certified?
Is NRP certification just a nurse cert. I know not all the rt's at my hospital can work NICU/LnD I know they have to be trained, qualified and signed off by the Nicu M.D. chief of staff. Our RT's also have to be present at any delivery if the doctor can't make it in time even if the baby is healthy and mom is doing good why is this ?

Er Vs Ob
Our maternity center is outside in a total different building say a 1/8 mile away so if they come into our E.R. the triage practioner will take a look if it's close or ready to do a stop and drop as they say she will push a code yellow button and a M.D. R.N. the Np already present and a RRT will respond and take care of business, we have a code yellow cart in triage all set up ready to go with all that OB stuff.

death
Our Lvn's or RN's put them in the bag then security transports them to the morgue and and also releases to morturary transport as far as all this cleaning stuff. Depends if the deputies or coroner is coming, if they are the deceased will have tubes, lines and look like something out of a horror movie. Cause I guess coroner wants to investigate as is??

Out of scope or being a professional?
[ This baby was lucky because it didn't have to wait for the RT to be called. Thats what the assigned R.N. was makin light of , when he said what better then to have a RT standin right there. I asked a little more about the situation and all the RN's RT's Md's said man if someone collapses outt here which it can I'm sure it will or does it's within anyone scopes to yell Doctor or grab anyone with medical training be RT , RN ,CNA ,Ultrasound , they even said X-ray techs have BLS?? I guess when it's a emergency it's within everyone scopes to yell or get ur ass up and get someone who can help LOL

Er Charge Nurses
Our E.R. charge nurses are divided into 4 color coded zones they each have a zone , they pretty much assign tasks handle issues with patients take complaints and until I started workin at a hospital thought all death notifications were made by MD'S to many movies I guess but at our E.R. it's the charge nurses job to do the death notes and speak to the family in a special room we have set up for that. They aren't really centrally located they are all over the E.R. and carry a house phone with them. There first task on shift is to set up the code blue team and code yellow team prior to start of shift I see them do this very first thing when they get in find out who's workin and make a team and notify each member in pass down. I feel sorry for ours they never eat or get to rest in 12 1/2 hours.

Out of scope or being a professional?
Yeah I kinda figured it was okay but wasn't sure , the ER desk is a RN assigned position. He just happened to be there while his buddy (the RN assigned to the desk) took a patient back to the back. And she just happened to come into the ER with the infant. I asked the RN after posting this last night and he said if someone isnt breathing good and they are that young what better than to have RRT standing around LOL he kinda made a joke about it then seriously replied if he hadn't took action as a medically trained professional He'd lose some respect real quick and me and him would have a talk!!! Iv'e seen RT vs RN post and asked him about that he said dude it's called a Health care TEAM!!!

Out of scope or being a professional?
I'm new to the world of nursing and hospital enviroment and hear alot about scope of practice and such . But a couple days ago while going about my non medical staff duties in the ER waiting area behind the desk of the ER waiting room R.N'S desk. In our hospital we have a R.N. behind a desk in the E.R. for obvious reasons. Anyhow while talking to the RRT who is friends with the R.N. who was assigned the desk that particular night. Anyhow to the point the RRT was talkin with me about schoolin and such while the R.N. took a patitent to the back, when a lady with a 4 month old came flying in sayin her baby isn't breathing very well and even in my non skilled eyes I could see something is wrong, The RT had her put the baby carrier on the desk and put that little machine with red light on it that goes on your finger or foot (pulse ox) I hear them say that anyhow he used his stethascope did some other little things and took the baby to the back. Since that is a RN'S post to work so to speak was the RT out of scope or acting as a medically trained professional, in your opinion ? I look at him as someone who saw something knew what he was doing and acted but like I said I;m not medically trained!

Former RT's now RN's
Do you plan to go to RN school after RT school? What do you hope to do with your RT? I would like to one day work in the NICU or PEDS , our NICU only allows seasoned RT'S in the unit , and maybe work at childrens hospital in L.A. I dont mind one bit being a neb jockey as they call it and startin out on the floors going to the occasional code blue and learning, I want to know my $hit before I go to the NICU cause I know those little ones can dump so fast!!! As far as R.N. not sure the RT teacher for my program is a former RT now he's a Nurse practioner maybe follow is route over a long long period of time I have to work full time like so many of us do.

Former RT's now RN's
Yes, at the college, I'm taking the class at, nursing science is 4 semesters and RT is 4 semesters and 1 mandatory summer session. both have similiar pre reqs BIO, ANAT, CHEM, etc. Like I said earlier I was always under the impression that nursing school was much harder, but thats why I'm here askin you guys to set me straight, even tho I work at a Big district hospital I don't speak of my goals and such to co-workers cause talk is cheap, and I got a long road ahead!!!! and I doubt the RT'S or RN'S want to hear about my goals????
-
Former RT's now RN's
I have 3 out of the 5 people I know taking nursing science to become a R.N. officially fail out. While talking to a newer R.N. who was a RT, I opened my big mouth and said I'm sure glad I'm taking Respiratory therapy and not nursing science (BIG MISTAKE) She lit me up and matter of fact sounding told me RT school is no joke and some of the classes were as hard as anything she ever did in nursing science. Is this true? cause I know becoming a R.N. is very hard. Not taking anything away from RT'S heck it's what I want to do but I was just under a false assumption that RN school is much more difficult.

Can it be aquired??
I am a Hospital employee, I work at a 400 room full service Hospital, though I am not a medical staff employee, I am a support staff as they call it. I have a desire to be a RT no this isnt a RT VS. R.N. question My aunts are both charge nurses at the same one in NICU and the other in PEDs.So to the point the blood guts, poop vomit and pee can I aquire it or do you have to be not bothered by it before you even become a RT or Nurse The RT today let me watch her suction some nasty stuff out of some guy today and I did okay but I never been to a code blue or trauma room where you guys are holdin brains from fallin off the gurney stuff like that or having some old lady have diarreha pourin out while u guys are working on her. I'm just curious if it's a taste u can aquire or a thing where u either have it or u don't ????
