  1. I'm taking a big whopping 4 credits! Intermediate Algebra For those of you taking math for the first time in like forever, don't worry so much. I was afraid too, because my first round in math 15 years ago I didn't do so well and this time I more than aced it. I got a 101.03% in pre alg. I just loved learning this time around and it made a big difference. Plus, it helped that I need to make top grades to get into nursing, so it was a great first step to stay on top of it.
  2. I'm a pre-nursing student at LCC, so I congratulate you on your acceptance. I just noticed the MIchigan thread today, so I haven't been around this part. I have been on the pre nursing student thread though off and on. I'm just starting, so I have some math and science pre-reqs to do first. I still need to attend the information meeting yet. What's the ratio to those that apply to those that get accepted? I've met some other pre nursing students in my math class and I didn't get up the nerve to ask them. I think it's pretty high # of apps to # of openings. A little scary, but I'll make it happen if I work hard. Again, congrats!
  3. I think you should retake the math class and like others have mentioned, try to find a teacher who is good. Usually if you talk to some other students or go to the math department, they can give you some suggestions. I haven't taken math since early 90's, so my brain was a little cobwebbed and this semester in 107 (intro to Alg) I've had to work really hard to hold on to a 98% in the class. This teacher gives quizzes almost every class, 6 tests and a final. I'm not a math person, so I'm really struggling, but taking learning math differently this time. I actually want to learn it and improve on my mistakes I make. Plus, this teacher gives us extra credit work after the test day, so we can add 3 points each time. If you're not a math person, then you really need to work 2-3 times as hard on those subjects, than you would on others. I know I do. I do a little bit of homework every single night to keep it fresh, otherwise I'll forget the rules. Good luck!
  4. I'm joining in too. I would love to lose weight before I join the rigors of nursing school. I'm only in my 1st class now, so I have some time before that. I need to journal eating and emotions behind why I'm doing it. Need to schedule exercise every morning; which I do now only 2 day a week. I can up that to 6 days, since I just do 45 minutes of walking and some light weights on arms and legs. I had 3 donuts today and my DD is turning 3 on Sunday, so I will have my cake and eat it too. I'll make sure to throw away the stuff that's not good for you. Definately get rid of the Hydrogenated oil snacks. That stuff doesn't leave your body once it's in. That's the first thing to go. April 1st, here I come. kinntj
  5. If you really want to be a nurse then retake the classes and make this your last time. Hire a tutor or polish your study habits. I'm going into the LPN program, because it is easier to get into, but they bridge to the RN program. That's the way I'm getting around it. My MIL said you'll have no life practically in nursing school, but after you can reap the rewards when you are in your dream career. She's retired now and doesn't regret the hard work she put into nursing school so she could be one. Do what it takes to get the better grades in class and get that degree! Calling yourself stupid and pathetic isn't going to help you. Sciences are hard for the majority of people, so take it easy on yourself.
  6. I sound much like you. The difference of me then and now as a student, is that I want to learn. I want to get A's. I want to face my fears and be successful. Nursing is a very intimidating career to read about. Just take it one course/semester and step at a time. Do the very best you can. If nursing is really what you want to do, you'll do anything to get there. I'm a pre nursing student just starting by taking Math 107 Intro to Alg., so I will take it one class at a time and one test at a time. See where I go. Good Luck!
  7. I have 2-3 years before I can apply to nursing school due to kids being home yet. Once they are in school full time I can go to nursing school full time while they are away. In this 2-3 years, I've vowed to start walking on the treadmill and outside and strength training. This will help the blood flow and get in shape for clinicals and for taking tests. Plus, exercise is a good way to relieve stress and from what I hear, nursing school is stressful.
  8. This is my 1st semester going back to school after 10+ years, so I'm taking Math 107 only. Next semester I'll take 2 classes and work my way up. I have alot of my general classes done and they transferred over, so it's nice to concentrate on math and science classes with maybe a speech class to take in there too. Also this Spring I'm attending the pre nursing informational seminar, I'm just waiting for dates and then I can sign up.
  9. I'll have to look into that. I read something similar lately about chemistry too. That you should have a positive attitude towards it. Make peace with it and master it!
  10. Lots of reasons, but the ones most important are: helping people and being in a challenging career, learning the body systems/diseases and medicines that can help, earning potential, and flexibility. My MIL retired as an LPN and she kept talking so postively about her job and the way the nurses would chip in and switch shifts if something came up. Now my MIL volunteers at the Red Cross answering phones; which she loves, so she's still doing good work. I even plan on applying to 3 different nursing schools bettering my chances of getting in. All within an hour drive. I want it that bad!
  11. I'm sacraficing time with my kids, but I've been blessed to stay home with them this long, so now it's my turn to do things for me. I'm hoping it's such a short intense time, that it won't hurt them too much. We're sacraficing money and going on family trips. I promised them a trip to Disney World when I'm all done. I love seeing others responses.
  12. Thank you so much everyone for the math links. I have my first math Intro to Algebra this Spring semester and I really need all the help I can get. It does help that our college has free tutoring too, but when you're at home and you're stuck, who's going to go out driving to get help? I'd rather see if I can figure it out by other methods taught from internet sites first. I just need to go get a graphics calculator after class starts to see if the instructor prefers a specific kind.
  13. Definately talk to someone in the special admissions/nursing department (if that is what your school has) and ask for specific information. Like another poster said, our information is on the internet, but it's general guidelines and not up to date. Yes, you can have a 2.5 to be "allowed" into the program, but you're up against tons of applicants who have 4.0's or close to it. Who do you think they'll want in their program? Our school has a point system too. I'm planning on going after the Spring semester to the Nursing seminar to see what is required along with seeing my guidance counselor after every semester too. It helps to keep updated on changes. Our school is also adding two new accellerated programs into the mix, so that should help things. Good luck.
  14. It sounds like you have a difficult situation, but I know that if you really want this you can find a way to make it work. I can't give you more advice than some of these great ladies already have. I called the nursing program admissions office today at our local cc to get the admissions requirements for nursing school. They will call me back with the information. I really want to know what to expect. I'm just starting school in January after being out for 11 years and it's difficult, but I really want this. I'm reading up on nursing now and my MIL was a LPN for many, many years before her health made her give it up. She loved it!!! Just take it one class and one problem at a time and you'll get there.
