  1. Oh how I wish we had an EMR. I have 3 schools with a total of approximately 1,800 students I rotate between these schools through out the week. I actually leave myself sticky notes on paperwork to remember what I was doing with it the last day I was there. I do NOT feel like I am documenting enough, but I am getting better. Even if it is just a short note saying that I re-checked a child for head lice....but I still feel like I could do more. I am still fairly new, so I have yet to find my groove. I would given anything to go down to having only two schools. A girl can dream right? One of my schools has thermometers in each room, but they still send students up for temperature checks?! I am still trying to figure that one out. Sometimes I feel like I am sherking my nursing duties....but come on a band aid? I even had one sent to me right at the end of the day because her butt itched. What was I supposed to do with that one? :***:
  2. I work weekends at an inpatient mental health facility that concentrates on eating disorders. I have been working in this field for 5 years now and it is still fulfilling. I would love to not have to work 2 jobs, but my pay for school nursing is atrocious!
  3. Sung in the theme of Twelve Days of Christmas J On the Twelfth day before Christmas break the school nurse dealt with: 12 head lice crawling 11 ears a throbbing 10 throats a scratching 9 temperatures rising 8 heads a hurting 7 children crying 6 meds a giving 5 Band-aids 4 ice packs 3 pink eyes 2 upset tummies And a hug to make it all better
  4. They are saying pancytopenia. Better then Leukemia I guess.
  5. Maybe a bit off topic....but maybe just slip into conversation how African American people tend to have hypertension, which kills the kidneys and blah blah blah. Unregulated blood sugars would totally kill this too. Make sure you also mention dialysis too. I am all for the in your face education
  6. Her parents did not have a phone, so we decided to take her home. Her house was like 5 miles or so from the school. I was more concerned with the Life Flight, because an ambulance ride between the two hospitals would have been an hour and a half...two tops, and they didn't want to wait that long. I haven't heard the definite diagnosis yet, but last I heard they were testing for Leukemia.
  7. I am a new school nurse and I run 3 schools. 1. K-5 2. K-2 and 3. 3-5. I rotate schools through out the week. I see some frequent fliers and then there are some that are new to me. This week I heard the "We need you to look at this student for us" as soon as I walked in the door. I turned around, saw this child and my heart dropped. She was an awful grey color. The teacher told her "Show her your mouth". She pulled her bottom lip down and her gums were bleeding. I then noticed her eye had a hemorrhage and she had petechiae on her face. So it was me, the student, the guidance counselor and the social worker talking to this student. After assessing her, her vitals were not off...though I did not have a pulse oximeter. I also discovered petechiae on her ears, neck, arms, legs. and she had some serious bruising too. It was not abuse (neglect maybe, but not the cause)...and I immediately feared the worst case scenarios in my head. Since I had no idea what her blood labs looked like (I just knew that she was low....WAY LOW), and that she needed to get to the doctor...THAT day. We took her home. She was taken to a hospital and then eventually life flighted to another. When I heard life flighted, I started second guessing myself. I knew she needed to be seen, but I did not think that EMS was warranted. Now I am not so sure. I didn't call EMS, because the student was already freaking out about going to the doctor, and I didn't think it was life or death emergent at the time. Her vitals were stable and she was not in distress. She was actually sitting in my office doing her math work while I was getting her paperwork together to take her home. I also felt helpless, because I have done emergency nursing before and I felt helpless as to what I could do to help this student. I am used to seeing things in action (drawing labs, starting IVs, giving blood) and being able to follow things through. I felt like I could not REALLY help this student. Yes I recognized that she was in trouble, but hell anyone could have done that. How did I help her and did I even do enough, since I didn't call 911?
  8. I told my supervisor that we need to be sent to Forensics classes, because I am not the Super Guru of Name That Bruise. I missed the class in nursing school that told me what had to be done to form every shape of bruise known to man. I have watched just as much CSI as you.....your guess is as good as mine.
  9. I would love to see that form!! My email is posted above.
  10. please share with me [email protected]
  11. I am in week two of my new school nurse position. I have 3 schools, with 3 different nurses teaching me 3 different ways to do the same job. It is VERY confusing!! I do love my schedule, but wish I wasn't so confused. I feel like a complete imbecile when it comes to the paperwork. How many copies do I need to make? Who gets a copy of what paperwork? What to do with diet orders? Where to document nurse's notes? What goes in their permanent folders? I just hate feeling incompetent...especially since one of the nurse's training me is my new boss. SIGH....just frustrated right now. I know once I get the hang of it I'll be OK, but right now it's just a little overwhelming.

NC- Will be making roughly $29,000 until I get my national certification and then it goes to $33,000. This is my first year as a school nurse, but you can't beat the schedule. I have three young children and my oldest is on the autism spectrum, so being able to be more of a help at home is PRICELESS!!
  13. I saw a requirement of 1,000 but a recommendation of 4,000. Maybe I will go in between :) I too hope that I love this job. I have 3 kids and the oldest is a high functioning autistic. Unfortunately he has to get up at 5am to get on the special needs bus at 6am. With this job, I will be able to take him to school and he will be able to sleep a bit more. A "normal" family schedule will be something fabulous too. My husband and I haven't really been on the same schedule since we served in the Air Force together over 15 years ago....SIGH. Praying that I have found the right fit!!

  15. Thank you for getting back with me. How long were you a school nurse before you took the test? The guidelines recommend 4,000 hours before you take the test, but I really don't want to take that long.
