  1. painful stimule is an example of noxious stimuli... painful stimuli,, example= needle prick,,, noxious stimuli,, example= loud sounds,,, bright lights, glare
  2. id recommend a good fundamentals of nursing book.... its the one authored by barbara kozier, shirlee snyder, and glenora erb... the title is FUNDAMENTALS OF NURSING
  3. welcome,,, so well maybe there are a few gross stuff that you may encounter,,, but hey,, who cares? its all part of the excitement of being in the nursing school... i nearly passed out in the delivery room, but hey,,, still it was a LOT of fun in nursing school... goodluck,,,
  4. one of the most unattractive things in the world is a partner who is unsupportive... remember that an unsupportive partner will be a BANE to anyone REGARDLESS of what career he/she is in
  5. i never believed that grades are the determinants whether or not one will become a good nurse because attitude plays a very vital role as well... im a nurse-educator and honestly,, i always tell my students that the students who get the high marks dont always become the good nurses. its still the students who have the heart and attitude for nursing who will be the better nurses over all
  6. i think this would be transference (or if the nurse was the one who fell for the patient, counter-transference)... well anyway, i think its very possible considering we are all humans capable of falling for someone, esp if that someone is caring ( who wouldnt fall for someone caring?)... however, with that said, i think if the nurse will also fall for the patient, then the nurse's objectivity and professionalism will inevitably be questioned. the nurse i think should clarify what her role is in this therapeutic alliance with the patient. if feelings get in the way, the nurse should use her better judgement and ask to be assigned in another area or to another patient
  7. that nurse doesnt have the right attitude. to say that , "were JUST nurses" clearly degrades the profession. while it is true that there are other stuff that only doctors are really proficient at, that doesnt stop us from asking from doctors regarding stuff in xrays or the likes. i mean i dont stop myself from asking the doctors i go to duty with regarding stuff like that. learning is NEVER static, it is always dynamic.
  8. they arent necessarily have to be sterile. in an emergency, sterility will have to take a back seat or two to preserve the patient's life
  9. hmm i do think that the ANA is somewhat the "union" that nurses are affiliated to. however, you might have a point there
  10. sequelae replied to samaletta's topic in Cardiac
thats all? i mean it said "titrate," nothing else? i think there should have been a specific parameter like for example, titrate until target PR of ___ is achieved then ____ something liek that. is it me or the order was lacking in another component?
  11. i was pretty much the squeamish type before too. at first i found the stench and the gross sights unbearable but a couple of months into it, i just laugh at it yknow what i mean? i think youll get used to it too just like most of us.. also what i was doing before, if i wanna retch or whatever, i do it in private as a courtesy to the patients and the other people nearby.
  12. as a general rule, stay away from scented ones because greater irritations come from them. there are products that seal in moisture, those are the ones to use for dry cracked skin
  13. i believe that at all times we will have to prioritize the patients based on the triage system. if a patient gets unruly because of feelings of being ignored and starts causing a commotion that it disrupts the er staff, then that patient must be shown the way.
  14. i think almost everyone experiences what you are going through. you have to find the area that you are most suited to. im a new grad too and i got lucky that my job now as an emergency room nurse is what i ACTUALLY love coz i always thought i want to be in the ICU. it might not be immediately but you will find your preferred area soon enough. regarding your symptoms, have you considered talking to your superior about them? if the area youre in brings you great stress as i see it, i guess you might need a new environment. dont forget to relax coz stress will bring you donw
  15. the question is as i see it is: are you unhappy because NURSING is not what you really love doing? think about it, have you ever wanted to be a teacher? i finished psychology and because the job opportunities here are severely lacking for psychology, i decided to go into nursing. but thats because im flexible. if you think you can handle the added strain of going back to school for another degree, go for it. however, if you so loved your job in education (is that nursing education) you might as well look for some more jobs related to education before deciding to make the drastic move going back to school again. and remember, it never is pretty to be getting in a job THAT YOU DONT LOVE.
  16. well i heard from some that new mexico is pretty quick. but i think waiting for 3 months for your eligibility from CALIFORNIA is pretty reasonable. hmm i think you might as well go for your nclex first then you can take the language exams provided youre confident youre gonna pass the language exams in one shot. calif doesnt require cgfns
  17. 1. i do however it is not that developed ? i still commit a few errors now and then 2. 3 to 4 fingers 3. i guess i am coz not too many people around here can type as fast as i could in my opinion 4. ill make a rough estimate only. around 75 or so
  18. i guess the first thing you have to find out is whether the hospitals there will be hiring new nurses who lets face it are a little yknow on the older side? because if you do become a RN and the hospitals dont hire older new nurses you might have problems. but if they will be hiring, go for it i guess
  19. im not a parent, but im nonetheless concerned. im a registered nurse. anyway, the so-called "school nurse" definitely is misrepresenting herself by branding herself as the school nurse and what she is doing is illegal. she isnt even supposed to prescribe ANY medication (not unless she is nurse clinician or whatever). plus, she shouldnt diagnose as she isnt a doctor even. some action has to be done before her fraudulent practice harms anyone.
  20. by all means, go study what you think you are suited for (in your case labor and delivery). if you decide to be a nurse-midwife i believe you will have a "dual role" of being a nurse in addition to being a midwife; you perform both functions ideally. but i think to be sure that you are going to be doing things that you were trained in school, you should before committing yourself to working in a certain institution/hospital, CHECK THE JOB DESCRIPTION of the position you are going to be applying for. if is says that your job will be different to what you were trained to do, then by all means, dont accept the job.
  21. i dont think that it is necessary because if that is the field that you want to be in, by all means get in that field. gaining 2 years in medical surgical wont necessarily make you more qualified or even be an effective psychiatric nurse for that matter.
  22. personally, if someone would do the same thing to me, right then and there i would put them in their place. i mean hello??? no one (READ: NO ONE) has the right to make you feel miserable about yourself. it no longer is an issue of cultural differences here. the issue is that she is a pure *****. the last straw i believe is the comments she made to your son. one word of advice: never let her make you feel miserable. you can always complain in the proper office regarding people like her. and if she will flunk you because of what you did, all the more that you will have a case you can file against her. goodluck
  23. never obtain a consent FROM A MEDICATED PATIENT. as for psychiatric patient, i believe it is only acceptable during their LUCID INTERVAL.
  24. if you say that you really want to finish the course, then by all means finish it. i always believe that if you want something really bad, then nothing should stop you doing it. as for your depression, i remember something that a famous psychologist said (forgot his name though): things that are happening around you will affect you IF YOU LET THEM AFFECT YOU. i wish you all the luck
  25. if there is a chance that you could pass by passing with final colors your remaining tests, i say go for it. although you will have to really study hard, itll save you time. but if youre not confident about it, i guess youll have to withdraw then.
