Amedysis
PalPN- Yes they will use your phlebotomy skills! I have never done HH before myself. I started in November...My DOO was willing to train me. I have never done phlebotomy before I started and believe me I learned rather quickly!! for my pts I do whatever it is that they are being skilled for... plus whatever else they need. Teaching....alot of teaching on disease proccess, s/s of exacerbations of disease, wound care, call PCP's. I really really enjoy it!! My Director will not even think twice about going out to do a visit if we need help. As far as IV I don't know if LPNS are allowed to insert IV's according to thier policy. You will get many different opinions regarding this company...I was nervous to try it out after all the negative. However it turns out it really is not negative at all! Good Luck!! let me know what you decide!! Willow- we have Mother Theresa hanging in our office as well!

Amedysis
Hello! I currently am an lpn working for amedisys! You may get different opinions about the company. Believe me I did my research...but took the chance...I love it!! My DOO (director) is the best! As an LPN we only get to do straight visits without all the extra paperwork! I get what I need for my patients...they don't give me more than six patients a day. As long as you are organized and get a system down I do not have anything negative things to say. A RN on the other hand may have a diff opinon...I see what they go through! If you have any other questions feel free to ask me....good luck!

Homebound guidelines
I am wondering what you mean by primarily seen by LPNs? I am an LPN and have the judgement to tell when someone needs to be discharged. Just because I am an LPN doesnt mean I dont know the boundries. And when someone should be a d/c I let my supervisor know. LPNs do have a a license to worry about as well. But I guess because we dont have an RN behind our name makes us dummies! whatever.

Pa hospital system won't hire smokers
I can go 12 plus hours without smoking and yes I am a regular smoker who knows the risks involved and I even hate the smell myself. However I can control when I smoke and when i don't. But no hospital/company is going to make me quit unless I want to. It doesn't make me any less of a nurse.
-
Pa hospital system won't hire smokers
Are you kidding me? Really? What's next telling people who like to over eat or are obese that they can not work in healthcare?? I can see maybe not smoking while at work...but when someone gets home and is off the clock THAT IS THIER BUISSNESS AS TO WHAT THEY DO!!! It is a choice to smoke.....and for some people (for those of you who do smoke) know the risk that is involved with it and it is their CHOICE to take a risk. To get a drug test for smoking is insane!!! It is discrimination against people who smoke....yes i agree it is a horrible habit...but when i do when i go home is my buissness and if i want to smoke a pack of cigarettes i will.
-
Pa hospital system won't hire smokers
It sounds like discrimination to me!! I guess I will not be applying to any of these hospitals....lol! Wait and see how many good people will be gone because of this!

state survey and a bad reputation
The facility I currently work in is now going to have a provisional II license..in pa...I am not quite exactly sure what that all entails but i can tell you it is not going to be fun!! just went through the second full survey for this year and I am sure that now there will be a third!!! And of course we have to come up with solutions and "band aides" to all the problems instead of looking at the root cause of all this stuff. My firm belief is that if there was enough staff on the floor and the state didn't make the requirements so low of staffing than these issues would decrease!!!! But NOOO why do that just push off the plan of correction to someone else instead of holding ppl accountable for their actions!! I personally don't think that the facility I work in gives horrible care...I see the compassion every day but I also see the frustration of the staff when they are so short!! I don't have any idea how two cna's can do their job efficiantly when they have 12 residents each to care for. I am a nurse however I am not a med nurse...I am a rehab nurse....I do answer bells for them, transfer, answer alarms etc...and they appreciate it so much when someone gives the cnas a hand! The nurses have so much on thier plate as well....I currently have another job offer and while I love LTC and the residents I am afraid they will end up shutting us down. I am sure the plan of correction is going to be hell! i dont know if i can take yet another full week survey!!!! I know what you are going through with the bad rep thing....we are in the daily newspaper at least once a week and it is so embaressing and the residents read the paper...i can' t even imagine how they feel. I hope things get better for you!

Overwhelmed at my LTC job...is this a normal workload for LTC?
What to say about LTC!! I could probably write a book with all the things wrong with long term care...but than again there are positive things about LTC if you have the help you need!!! 50:1...I think that is absoutly insane!! Let me ask you how many of those 50 residents need HS meds? And would it be possible to change some of those HS meds to 1700? The facility I currently work at is 240 beds...four wings...with about 26-30 down each hall. I can tell you that there are two LPN's for each wing and four RN's one for each wing during dayshift..I believe second shift has the same excpet there is only One RN supervisor. Night shift has 1 lpn for each wing and one RN...Jeez I thought my place was bad....and the treatments if there is a possible way to have them done by the time the second nurse leaves? Or change them to dayshift? To me it sounds like an unsafe enviornment for you because if something happens you will be held ultimatly responsible...I would find out from your department of health what the staffing requirements are in your state. And I would bring it up to your supervisor/DON. It just sounds shady to me....I think you should get out while you can...not all LTC facilities staff in such a way!

New to home health, next to nothing for orientation...vent
I will be new to HH to as an LPN...I currently work in long term care..which is always crazy in itself...I have always wanted to do HH but it seems as though it is just as or even worse than Long Term Care! I love the residents that I take care of dearly..I do not like the politics of the facility...I am hoping that HH will be less of drama and you could focus on the patient so much more.. I will be having to do 6 visits per day can anyone give advice on about how long of a day I can look forward to?? I currently work my 8 hours and come home...Is that going to change...will i be working many more hours for less since i will be getting paid per visit?? Any advice would be so appreciated!! Thanks!!!

Anything positive about amedysis home health???
I really need help from someone who can give me information that worked or works for amedysis! I was excited to hear that I was going to become a full time LPN for the company....However I see so many negative outcomes from amedysis!! I also have never done home health before. I currently work at a long term care facility and am looking for something different due to all the drama that is going on at my facility..also the PA department of health seems to have it out for us!!!! I need some advice...they gave me a good salary to start with...However if you are seeing about six patients in a day how long of a day does it end up to be?? I currently work my 8 hours and go home...Is this going to turn into 8,10,12 hour days?? Please advise!!!!! And is there anything positive regarding amedysis???

Advice for Restortaive Nurse!!
Restorative Nursing is to make sure the resident maintains thier highest level of function. When a resident comes off of PT/OT/SLP they write an order for a Restorative Nursing Program and set a goal that the resident is to maintain. A RNA is a Restorative Nurse Aide who carries out the Restorative Nurse programs. I am the Restorative Nurse and when the RNA is off I perfom those duties. These programs have to be done 6 days a week at least and for 15 min per day. It sounds pretty simple? Unfortunatly it is not so simple.

Advice for Restortaive Nurse!!
I was wondering if there are any RNP nurses out there who could give me a little advice about some of thier RNP programs! I have been the Restorative Nurse in a large facility in Pa for a little over a year! When I first started I did not have a RNA, however 6 months later I did get to hire one. I was promised that if this went well i would get at least one more (needless to say has not happened yet). It is a LTC and I know how things work. I have it split up into two levels.....Level 2 RNP is done by the rNa and myself. Level 3 is done by the staff cna on the floor. However we could only have so many residents on rnp 2 at one time. And it becomes very frustrating because we work with the residents and usually end up exceeding their goals and than d/c them to the staff on the floor to ambulate, do ROM.......and sure enough three months later i do a quarterly assessment and usually have to send a PT screen for a decline!!! Is this a common frustration in other LTC facilities?? Also I am involved a lot with falls and try to do everything I can to make sure the measures are in place..... and we do have falls meetings and so forth but I just don't know how to come up with an answer for every single fall! I also have some other responsibilities that are not part of RNP....because i am on the IDT team. It gets me so far behind. We are due for our re visit survey from the state and can't stand when the state is there!! Any advice or anyone in same situation would love to hear from you!!! Thanks Mel

LPN pay rate for Lehigh Valley Physicians Group
I am sorry that I have not responded sooner. I have been busy all week!! I am glad that you got the job....congrats!! I am sure it will work out for you. LPN pay rate for Lehigh Valley Physicians Group
I am glad that I could help you!! I worked in the Bethlehem Area but I live about an hour and a half away from there and i worked from 8-5:30 Mon-Thursday. Friday I worked until 12 (depending on when the patients were done). But when I started there I was only a nurse for 1 1/2 years and that is what I started @ $18 p/hour. I am not familiar with the Hamburg practice so I unfortunatly can't tell you how it is there. I did go for 2 interviews and a med test originally at a different practice -Health Springs. They called me a week later to tell me that I did not get the job. (Don't mean to be a bummer). Than a few days later I got a call from the practice I worked at and went for the interview and got the job. It truely is not as easy as I thought it was going to be. I did go back to LTC and was lucky enough to find a job that in LTC that is M-F with no holidays. The benefits are a definite bonus at LVPG. Please let me know if there is anything more. It all depends on the practice you work at. I worked with one other medical assistant who was probably 1/3 of the reason why I left. Let me know how it goes!! Good luck to you

LPN pay rate for Lehigh Valley Physicians Group
Hello, I worked for LVPG for about a year and a half as an LPN. I started at $18.00p/hour. I got a raise of 3% which is basically the yearly raise. I was being promoted to clinical coordinator and was going to be making about 44,000 salary. I did not stick around for more than one reason. It also depends what office you are going to work for. The money was not worth some of the aggrevation. The benefits are also great unless that has changed since. No paying for insurance and about 140 hours a year vacation. Hope this helps!!! I will be glad to help you out if you want to know more. PS. That med test pretty easy wasn't it? You will get the same one on a yearly basis Also thought working in a MD office would be less stress than long term care.....learned pretty quick it is just as stressful if not more! I am only a LPN for four years. I have gone back to the stress of LTC and do not regret it.

A day in the life of an nurse in a Doctor office
I just recently left a doctors office. I am an LPN and worked with a nurse practioner and a Dr. They were husband and wife! I did like it, but I can tell you that for me it was very stressful. I was the only LPN and there was a MA that worked with me also. I was in charge of triage, rooming patients, calling in rx, writing rx, updating meds, going through reports to pick out the most important ones, preparing the charts to make sure everything was there for the next day, do testing in the office. I did live almost an hour and a half away from my job so i would work from 8-5:30 depending on patient load, sometime later. My life revolved around thier scheduele. If they had a full sched. could not be off. Worked with strep throat and only took three hours of sick time!!!! I went back to Long Term Care and am doing Restorative nursing. I think long term care is less stressful. But again it depends on who you work for!!

CNAs are very disrespectful to LVN, that is me..
As a fairly new grad myself when I started working In LTC, my CNA were wonderful for the most part. I gave them a lot of respect, for they have been there longer than I have and knew the residents way more than I did. So I would ask them there advice on things, help them out they needed it. Just because I was an LPN and their supervisor did not mean that I couldnt put someone on the toilet. I never let them feel I was above them or better than them. They are there to help and I dont know what i would do without them. I guess in a sense I gained their respect and I respect them. So if I ask one of them to do something for me, they do it. There are the ones of course that dont want to do their job and will always be a problem, I do than get involved. Some of them may never respect you until you show them that you are thier boss. But in the same way are a team. I dont go about anything in a mean or screaming way unless of course they are completly out of line. So try and build a relationship with them, dont let them bring you down. If you were a CNA before than you know that the job is not easy at all. Good luck!!!

LVN degree..or just go for my RN?
I am currently an LPN for a year and some months now and I wish I would have just gone for my RN degree. I have many college credits from Penn State University and if I had gone for my RN degree I would have been one by now. I think that LPN shcool you get the most clinical experience a lot of hands on experience. But in the long run if you are an RN you have many many job oppurtunities, you can basically pick where you want to work. Lpns have fewer oppurtunities. I now want to go for my Rn but because of the cost of shcooling I have to hold off until I have enough money and my son who is four is a little older. Coming from personal experience, I love being an LPN but I wish I had just gone for it all and became an Rn!!!!

Who went to school Fulltime in the morning and Fulltime work at night? Can you share?
I had to go to school M-W from 6:30 to 2:30 and drive about a half hour to get there. Than on Thurs and Fri we had school from 8 to 3:00. When i first started I was bartending, Wed, Thurs, and Sat and Sunday nights. It was extremely difficult to work until about 2:30 sometimes 3 in the morning and go home and get up early in the morning and do it all over again. NOt to mention that I have a four year old son, well he was two at the time. I than had to stop bartending because it was way to hard, I had no time to study or to spend time with my son. So I got a part time job working from 4-10 which was just as hard because I had to come home from school and than go right to work. I took a severe pay cut, I started to work at a Personal Care home just to get some experience. I was really tired all the time and I felt bad because I could not spend all the time I wanted to with my son. But I did it!!! It was worth it because I came out a nurse!! Now I just have a problem finding a full time job that is dayshift!!! But it is definitly worth the hard times. I had a CNA that would work 3-11 and was going to school during the day as well. She had it hard because she worked full time, i dont think she ever got a day off!! But she survived as well. You can do whatever you put your mind to. NO pain No gain. and believe me the outcome is worth it!!! Good luck!!!!

Tandem Facility
Anyone here work for a Tandem owned facility? I know they have many facilities throughout the US. I work for one in Pa and was wondering what you think about them? They took over the facility a little over a year ago and it has gone down drastically over the past few months. Our supplies have been taken away little by little, it got to the point where we would have one box of gloves for a wing!!!!! Of course until the state came for our annual inspection than we all of a sudden had plenty! I work day shift and would work with 12 cna's total, three down each wing. They cut the day shift CNA now we are lucky to have two CNA down one wing, which is 26 pts. Gave 3-11 more CNA's! What sense does that make? If anyone works for them let me know if your facility is as bad as mine!!

Other nurses ever check behind your work??
I think that everyone will agree that there is always ONE nurse or maybe two that will try to make it look that they are the better nurse, or compete with you! To me its not about competing, we are all there for the same reason, to care for the residents or patients!! I think sometimes we forget that. We all make mistakes we are human. I do find myself covering for other nurses if they make a mistake, I don't go blabbing to everyone in the facility, I just fix it. If it is something life threatning, than of course yes I would have to report it. If I have the time to point out every Mar that is missed than I must be having a good day....lol!!!
