  1. Hi Nathan ,If you are not sure that you will like nursing take the shorter course and see i,m in Australia so I'm not sure of the difference between lPN ect .by starting at the bottom so to speak you will learn all the basic stuff that forms the platform of care that will be of benifit to your patients if you go onto further studies.
  2. MHN replied to carolynd's topic in Men in Nursing
Carolynd ,In the eaerly 70's I had limited experience in my general nurse training in gyny wards because i was a nurse who happened to be a male, however by the time I had finished the veils had been lifted i trained and a pupil midwife and completed the training and have been a licensed Midwife for about 30 yrs now. there are always some Ladies who prefer female doctors and nurses and there are probably more who are not bothered by the gender issue as long as you are competent to do the care required and have some practicale experience you can pass on to them and there husbands.
  3. Finness ,The senior psychiatrists told us the staff at the acute unit that this would probably be the one true case of Mania we would see in our careers.
  4. sarah ,the patient i saw was not reacting to any of the usual drugs here in fact diazepam caused the complete opposite effect. ect was the only choice left to the psychiatrist to use. btw the patient survived and even expressed that she would have ect again if she became that unwell again
  5. I've seen ECT used with several disorders sucessfully,Mania, depression, and psychotic depression
  6. I'm looking for information about the positive and negatives about the use of punch bags for psych patients to vent their anger.Does anyone have any experience regarding this or know of any articles that may throw some light on the subject. The reason i am asking is our unit is considering installing one. Thanks in advance MHN
  7. where i work the police or a GP MD or mental health Officer can bring someone in for psych assessment on an emergency action they must be seen within 4hrs then can be placed on an emergency detention order and detained for 72hrs and reviewed by the mental health tribunal if they are to be held longer the psychiatrist must then apply for an extension of 7 days then if further treatment a PTO Psychiatric treatment order can be applied for at the mental health tribunal which can mean the person must be compliant with their meds ,reside at a specific facility or they can then be breached collected by the police and brought to the psych unit to comply these breaches can only be granted by the chief psychiatrist of the state.MHN
  8. I work in a psych unit attached to a general hospital there is a special psych liaison nurse whose duty is to assist staff on the general wards deal with psych patients. The liaison nurse also helps the pts with the mental health diagnosis. So its a win win situation. As far as documentation goes all such incidents should be reported verbally to team leader, incidents forms completed and in the pts notes .
  9. We had traffic cop as patient many yrs ago when they still stainless steel urinals .We emptied a bottle of "Dexall"effervescent antacid in the dry urinal when the cop peed it went off like a mortar shell. He got a fright ,when he got he breath back he agreed he did deserve for all the traffic tickets he had written at our hospitals staff entry and exit gate.
  10. Above all a manager should have integrety, honesty and be truthful especially if they don't know the answer admit it and then find the answer out.
  11. I have had the privilage of caring for some nice people who were Rich or Famous or both. Most experiences were positive, although I have found that the noveau riche( especially those who never worked a day for their money) usually like to pull your strings flexing their ego's that have become the size of of their credit card debt and some wives or other relatives demand respect for the person that is unrealistic and definately not expected by the R&F person who usaully has apologised for their relatives behaviour. The nicest people in this catergory are those who have always worked, been employers and appreciate your qualifications and the value of your work.

  13. night owl the most embarassing incident occurred to me when I was pupil midwife(PM) ,being a male it was even more embarassing . I had a post partum lady who was febrile and its cause unknown she had been ordered a high lady partsl swab.As a PM and male to do such a procedure i needed to have a female in attendence this fell this our clinical instructor.I was explaining the procedure to the patient in sequence of what was to be done ,when the instructor chimed in with Remember to tickle the cervic she also was gesture this like she waving a sword about .the procedure started i reached as far as i could and "tickled the cervic" as instructed. At this point the lady who had a loose night dress on with some of the buttons undone started to blush i could feel myself embarrashed for the patient feeling a warm in my cheeks which turned to a burning sensation as she said "I have'nt felt like that for a long time " i didnt dare ask what she meant.
  14. The humour nurses use is often black and sometimes a little risque however it is the one way we have learned to cope with some pretty horible stuff. I suppose the hamster might have name Lazarus ,but then you would have to have waited 4 days instead of 3.
