Patient and Visitor Violence: What Do We Know? What Can We Do?
Love this ktwlpn, hehe "I plan on using a particularly PITA co-worker as a human shield and I always carry my car keys in my pocket so I can make a fast getaway." Seriously though...we don't allow visitors for anyone brought in by law enforcement. Psych visitors have to be searched. Lesson learned...soccer mom's do carry tasers and will use such tasers to breakout their loved ones. Thankfully she had a bad aim.

Must move with only 4 mos in 1st RN job (hubby job xfer)!!
My husband and I have been in this situation for the last 10 years, moving every 1-4 years, with 3 kids. In my experience, his company has to make it worth the move...paying broker fees on selling your house, cost of living increases (if it is more expensive in the new state), actually paying for the move, etc. Do your research on the cost of living because sometimes you end up losing money even though he is getting a promotion. During our moves, we have always had 3-6 months of commuting before we catch up with each other. It really isn't bad because there is an end in sight. But I believe you have to have a strong marriage to survive it. And you have to consider your insurance benefits to cover the pregnancy, your PDOs, and covered maternity leave. Do you have free babysitters from family? Will you lose that if you move? Add it all up!! Another thing to consider is the time it takes to get licensed in a different state. Will that take months? Will you been "very pregnant" by then? It is stressful every time we move but it has been the only way my husband has been able to "climb the corporate ladder" and make the most of his potential. My kids are in middleschool and highschool now, my husband will be moving to a new job withing the next 2 months, I will stay put until they graduate...5 years!! (He has been in our current state less than a year). I will go prn when he leaves to make sure I am home when needed by the kids and am home when he comes on the weekends. IMHO...from experience...he should never give up a promotion if there is a financial gain and an opportunity for learning a different area of the company. That could secure his future. If financially possible, I would stay at the current job until the baby is born, and in the meatime get as many certifications as you can. Then move and take a great maternity leave. Job search while on maternity leave. Then you will have your year of experience, certifications and will be marketable. Good luck!

Testing in Queens
I tested in Queens. Aside from the girl crying in the waiting room from nervousness, the testing room was very quiet, and very empty so was perfect. They actually took me back early.

Energy drinks and teens coming to ER with chest pain
I have seen an unreal amount of teen-young 20ish patients coming to the ER c/o severe chest pain after drinking 1-2 energy drinks. All have been negative on drug/alcohol screens and cardiac workups are also negative. I've never had an energy drink (I'll stick with coffee) so I can't relate to what these drinks do. We end up giving them antianxiety meds and d/c them home. Anyone else seeing this?

How far do you travel to get to work?
I travel 800 miles by plane, drive 45 min from airport to house, drive another 45 min-1 hour to work. I work 6 days on, 7 off so fly back when I'm off. I have been doing it for 6 months just to have a job. My family and I will move permantly in 4 weeks!! Whoohoo!! So I will only have the 45 min-1 hour drive then, lol.

South Carolina Nurse wanting GA license
I found these links that may help you. I just got my Ga RN by endorsement and called the board several times asking questions. I had no problems getting through to a live person and they were always helpful so try that if these links don't answer your questions. The biggest pain for me was getting the FBI card for the background check...had to drive to an FBI office and pick it up (those offices are not on every corner lol). After I mailed everything, my license was posted within a week! Hope this helps! http://www.sos.ga.gov/plb/lpn/ http://sos.georgia.gov/cgi-bin/plbforms.asp?board=13

Research language?! Homework help. =(
Seems like the answer is given in the article. "Conceptual Framework Andersen's Behavioral Model of Health Services Use well-established framework for understanding the determinants of healthcare access (Aday & Andersen, 1974; Andersen, 1995) and continues to be a relevant and evolving model in health services research. The model "provides a framework"

Needs Help with Rural Capstone Ideas
First you need to find out what specific problems the community is facing. Is it access to healthcare, high rate of diabetes, high rate of heart attacks, high rate of STDs in the schools...? Once you have the specific problem that needs to be addressed then you can come up with a plan and educate the community on how to meet their needs. Asking the health department or the high school nurse for information about the biggest problems seen would be a good way to start. It will look good on the capstone if you incorporate rates of the certain disease in the community, what they are lacking, and a plan to decrease the incidence. Hope this helps!

American Heart Association 2010 is the latest version. It is now CAB instead of ABC.

Nurses at Disney
I have to say I did not have a good experience with a nurse at Disney Orlando. My son tripped and a piece of bamboo gouged a chunk out of his leg. It was also full of dirt! At the first aid station, I asked the NP if we could clean it and she said they do not keep anything there to clean wounds....WHAT???? She did find a bottle of peroxide, handed it to me, left the room, and I never saw her again. We made a trip to the local ER where his wound was cleaned, packed with surgi-foam, and he got a tetnus shot. Needless to say, I was very disappointed with Disney that day.

Graduating in May as an RN in NY...moving to GA in August
Get your license in NY them immediately apply to GA and put "new grad" on the GA application. I know someone who did this exact thing a few months ago and her GA license came within a week. She only had to go to the police station in NY and be fingerprinted for a background check....said it was easy! You don't have to have a GA address. I would still check with the GA BON just in case things have changed though. Good Luck!!

Ideas for community nursing clinicals
I just got home from a soup kitchen for my community clinical. Another interesting one was an urban high school medical clinic...alot of pregnancies & STDs there. We are also going to a tobacco control meeting, county infection control center, a dialysis clinic, & home hospice.

HUGE mistake in clinical....
I wish they would make a sticky about student nurse mistakes because I'm sure EVERYONE makes them. I will be starting clinicals in the fall and I have learned so much from reading these types of posts. Thank you for sharing your story and rest assured that you are not the only one making them. Your instructor should have thanked you for being honest and used it as a teaching tool instead of reaming you.

UNA Florence question
I am currently at a school in Va that says 3.0 but the applicants need a 3.8. It was the same in TX (my husband gets transferred alot). Is it really a 2.5? I guess I need to call and ask. We are getting transferred again and I am finishing my last prereq. The company is trying to decide between NY and AL. I have applied to both places just in case.

UNA Florence question
Does anyone know what GPA they are accepting at the Univ of North Alabama in Florence?

Has anyone gotten their letter from Adelphi for Fall 08?
Is there any particular reason you would choose Manhattan? Just curious to know if the instructors/classes are better or do you just live closer?

Relocating to NY
I am relocating to NY (Long Island) this summer and a website that I have found very helpful is www.city-data.com/forum . You can join for free and ask questions to residents that know the area. They also have statistical info on neighborhoods, avg home price, schools, crime etc... Hope that helps!

Has anyone gotten their letter from Adelphi for Fall 08?
I would take that as a good sign that you will get in if your spring grades are good. It stinks that you will have to wait until June but at least you didn't receive a "no" on admissions. I still haven't heard anything yet. What campus will you be at? I will be at GC.

Has anyone gotten their letter from Adelphi for Fall 08?
I spoke with admissions this morning and they said my application may have gone to "re-read" because I have 4 different transcripts. They said it usually takes 3-4 weeks generally to hear back but a re-read could take an extra 2 weeks past that. They told me to call back if I haven't heard anything by the 11th. UGG!! I get a different response every time I call.
