I was once active and worked for PNA-NCR Zone 1 Manila Chapter. I enjoyed the involvement and active participation. Now, that I'm based in the US, I'm proud that I have joined a local chapter here for the PNAA. I'm not sure if you were absent during your Fundamentals of Nursing subject where they teach professional adjustment. Should you not asked yourself what you can do for your fellow nurses instead of just asking what the organization can do for you?

My case then was just to do the NCLEX without considering the state where I will pratice. I had my initial licensure from VT and endorsed it to FL. The process was straightforward, no fuss. My wife applied directly to FL BON. Even with the approved CES in place, it did not guarantee her automatic issuance of ATT. The board may still have questions and clarifications which I think clearly defeated the purpose of CES. This advice is based from my own experience. If you just want to do your NCLEX at this time, file it to VT.

I had my BSN from the Philippines and I'm proud that even though we are a developing country, we only have one pathway (BSN) to become a Registered Nurse. I worked in the United Kingdom for six years, they too have associate and degree courses and before I left, there were debates to change the curriculum to an all-degree level of education. I remember my college professor who fought for the all-degree nursing in the Philippines. Her argument is that for nurses to deliver quality health care, they should all be first class and educated at degree level. If I will be a patient, I want the best nurse to care for me. A nurse that is caring, competent, and certain of what he or she is doing.

I had my IELTS in London, I was expecting a modern equipment for the Listening part but it turned out to be an old sound system. I was a little bit far from the machine and I could barely hear the audio. Hope you won't get that problem. Good luck.

Got mine from National Bookstore, depends on the unit and number of lines/characters. You can collect it after 1-2 weeks.

Before signing, I knew that I'll pay a certain amount if I'll breach my contract. That's the reason why I'm sticking to it. I didn't need an attorney to review the contract because everything was disclosed. The agency helped me with the logistics, it worked for me because I have a full time job then. Didn't have to bother calling or making follow-up with CGFNS, BON, USCIS, etc. My main point of contact was the agency. Don't get me wrong that I may sound like pro-agency. Like I said it worked for me but maybe not to others. Don't be influenced by others blatant anti-agency campaign. Do what suits and works best for you guys.

Doing your own work is an option. Yes, I agree, it won't probably cost that much if you choose the do-it-yourself thing. To have or not to have an agency to expedite the process still boils down with individual circumstances and preferences.

I've worked in one of the biggest training hospitals in the country situated in the heart of Manila. It took me about two years to wait for a vacancy. Their selection process was really tough (Board Rating of 80% and above, qualifying exam, return demonstrations, panel interview, graduating class ranking, etc). It's a good learning environment working with the best Residents and Consultants in the country. We address our colleagues as sir and ma'am regardless of ranks. I was assigned in the ER (busiest). Seniority is really a big deal, even a day counts. If you're a junior you get the first half of the patients averaging from 25-30. They rotate your assignments from pediatrics, medical, surgical, EENT, and a 5-bedded Special Care Unit. The seniors obviously can choose which area they want to work. Now that I'm working abroad, if they assigned me six patients, you won't hear me moan. I just say to myself that I've been there, done that!

You will encounter different accents from English-speaking countries e.g. Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, etc. in the Listening part of the test. Yes, English definitely originated from England. I've been working in the UK for three years when I took the IELTS and the exposure to different accents helped a lot. Don't worry about the Speaking part, you don't have to change your accent to prepare . Just speak naturally and pronounce words as they were taught in school.

I can only comment on how my agency handled my application. Basically, it's easier to expedite the tons of paper works with the help of an agency. Unless, you have the luxury of time to sort things out by yourself re: applications e.g. Visa Screen (through CGFNS), Board of Nursing, etc. My agency has a Welcome Week where they help you to lodge your application for your SS no. They take you to car dealers. Help you with the necessary requirements such as BLS, ACLS, PALS, etc. Tour you around the area, open a bank acoount, help you with basic needs (shopping/groceries) among others. I have a friend who was recruited directly by a well-known hospital. Unfortunately, he didn't get the treatment and convenience mentioned above. The major drawback is the paycheck as what suzanne4 cited. But I guess this is how it works. It's a give and take situation. You scratch my back , I'll scratch yours. Good luck on your interview and I hope you got some insights on what help they could offer to you.

You'll hear actual spoken exam through the cd. There are also comments on how do they grade re: accent, grammar, fluency, etc. Sample topic questions can also be found on the book, so you can practise either by yourself or with someone. You can also record your answer and listen to it afterwards.

Another option is to order their Manual/Handbook. It has CD where you can practice the Listening part. The only thing you can't validate during the practice is the Writing section but you will have an idea from actual work of examinees and the corresponding comments/corrections made by the checker.

Not sure in California. Here in Florida, Nursing Assistants have to be certified. As for orientation as an RN, normally it's a week in classroom and a week on the floor. You can always bargain for an extension if you feel you're not ready yet.
