  1. Hi SweettartRN, When you handed in your resignation without notice, did you find it difficult to obtain another position elsewhere? I live in an at will state also. Once in my life I resigned without notice and had a very difficult time to get hired at another facility. Just curious. Have a great day!
  2. Congratulations! I'd love to find my dream job, but I don't know what it is. I currently work in LTC and its very close to where I live. With the way jobs are so hard to get these days I don't dare leave. One would feel like working in nursing, that you'd have pretty good job security, right? I don't feel that way where I work, seem to be lately they fire employees at the drop of a hat. It makes me wonder from one day to the next if I'll have a job or not. I do my job and do it well, but so have others that have been let go. I'm very pleased you got your dream job and I hope it turns out to be all that you want it to be. Once again, congratulations!

  4. i remember what it was like starting out as a new nurse. my first nursing job was in a ltc, that was a mistake for me. i didn't know enough i thought to be the only nurse on noc shift and responsible for 35 residents. it was quite nerve wracking. i would have nocs where i would literally cry before going to work. my orientation was only 3 days too. not near enough in my opinion. i did however work in a small community hospital and i got a one month orientation. it was wonderful and i felt more confident. i think that is the way it should be in every facility, especially for new grads. hang in there, you'll do fine. good luck et congratulations on becoming a nurse, that is something to be proud of! wanda/nebraska
  5. wow! i'd love to make that kind of money. i've been an lpn since 1998, i work in a ltcf and make around $19/hr. which is a good amount, but $26.50 would be so much nicer and make living much easier. i live in nebraska. good luck when you graduate and are practicing. i hope you can find a job that pays that well. wanda/ne
  6. i think that 3 days orientation is rediculous. that is how many i had at the ltcf i work at now. not nearly enough time. another ltcf gave 1 week orientation. that was when i was fresh out of school. a little better, but i felt not enough. i worked there only 2 months, i didn't feel that i knew enough and didn't feel comfortable being responsible for 38+ residents fresh out of school. the best place i worked at as far as orientation was a smaller town hospital and they give their nurses a one month orientation. it was wonderful and i felt more comfortable. after the first few days i was given my own patients, but still was in orientation and assigned to another nurse if i had questions or concerns. :offtopic: i miss working there. i love hospital work, moreso than ltc. but it was an hours drive one way to work, that got old, especially in the winter :sstrs:. lol. the advantage to working in ltc is that you really get to know your residents because you're with them daily. where i work now is only 3 miles from home and thats great, but i still miss the hospital. sorry to have rambled on, i have a tendency to do that . wanda/ne :prdnrs:
  7. Where I work if a med isn't available, I initial and circle it. Then we are to write above on the PRN med sheet why it wasn't given. I think writing it on the MAR makes more sense, then the reason will be on the same sheet, whereas on the PRN sheet that can be on the medex for a long time until its full. Same as if a resident refuses their meds, initial and circle then chart refused above. I have a question, if a resident refuses their med, are you to call their doc and report they refused it? I haven't done this at the LTCF I work in, but when I worked at a hospital we had a pt that didn't get a med and were to report it the doc, I didn't know that and I don't know if the CN knew it or not, but we were in some hot water about that one.

    i'm sorry to hear that you were let go. it does sound like it may have been a blessing. i know that doesn't help much, but perhaps you can get full time hours at the nh or something else. i would wear something nice to the job fair, never know, you may get an interview while there. i will keep you in my thoughts and keep my fingers crossed for you, that all turns out well! good luck! wanda/ne
  9. i used to work in a hospital on a subacute unit. i came on duty and received patients from a float nurse. prior to my arrival he had administered medications to the wrong patient and some of the meds were bp meds. it was quite scary, the patient was fine in the end, thank goodness! i have made two med errors in my 11 years of nursing and i have learned from them. some may think that i'm to cautious, but i don't think there is such a thing. i now work in a ltcf and know all the residents. when i first started there i was very nervous about giving meds to the wrong resident. we have pictures of them on the cardex, but they aren't always current and as we all know people change in appearance. i wished they had armbands. i know they don't because this is their home and at home you don't wear an armband. i think it would be a good idea for safety. i also wished that they had armbands or some kind of a coding system on the resident for their code status. its quite hard to remember who is all a code or no code and in an emergency it would be nice to be able to know immediately without having to look in a chart when every minute counts. sorry for getting off topic a bit.

  12. that is an excellent suggestion. to the op: i'm so very sorry to hear about this tragic event that happened to the child. she will need much care, guidance, love and understanding. she has a long road ahead of her. i don't understand how someone could do this to an adult, much less a child. its sickening. i also hope that they caught the rapist and will be charged with the max that can be given. thank you for being their for this child. you are truely an angel.:hgu: god bless you and the child.
