The Patient I Failed
:heartbeatI know how you feel. I went through similar episode. My husband went thru surgery @ hospital, developed ARDS, was trached, developed renal failure, was dialized. this lasted from a Feb to ist of May. I refused for him to be coded, shocked, or CPR, but after his heart stopped they gave him epi/atropine, which of course resulted in heart restarting. He had feeding tube-replaced with Peg tube developed contractures, pressure ulcers from the slighest touch, had mrsa, diarrhea constantly. I finally made a decision to move him to patient room on floor. this was done , his o2 was connected to outlet of 10 liters. I did all of his care that night, slept with him, I held him and talked to him of our life together from when we met to now. I apologized to him for the agony I put him thru and the fact I let him go. I don't know if he comprehended but he died the next morning. I don't know if I helped or hindered my husband's care , but I live with guilt to this day and it's been 5 years. God bless you and you will be in my prayers.:redbeathe

Held Hostage By The Schedule!
What Do You Do With Staff That Wants Every Holiday Off, This Includes Spring Break, Easter, Flag Day, Etc. I Know Everyone Wants Off With Their Children , But Where Does This Leave Your Patients. Every Nurse When I Started Out Wanted Off, I Worked Because I Was Told I Did Not Have Children, Now These Nurses Are Gone ( When Their Children Grew Up) And I Realized I Did Not Take Time To Be With My Family ( My Dad Died--then I Started Taking My Time).

Song lyrics that remind you of nursing...
When I was in Psych training in 1974, there was a man singing " Lean On Me" while we were sitting outside eating. The more we ignored him the louder he got. By the time he got to the end, he told his staff or attendant to go "tell them student nurses to kiss my butt." ( actually he was real good with this song) Now when I hear this song I have to smile.

Why did you take up nursing? What's your story?
It was the years of hippie, vietanam, and walk on the moon. Out of high school for less than year, I lived in Memphis,TN and Jackson, MS playing and having fun. well fun and funds ran out so home this little pig went. After a month or two my mother gave me three options: 1. She would pay for me to go to nursing school 2. I could find a job locally in town and work for factory 3. Or I could work in chicken houses (back then everything was manual not electronic, etc. So guess what my decision was? I have been a nurse for almost 35 years, and have been able to support myself, and a sick husband when needed. I'm glad I went into nursing not because it is rewarding, but because of the security if you do your job correctly, honestly, fairly with loyalty then there will always be a job open some where for you. THANKS MOM (Now in heaven)

Best Plus Sized Scrubs?
I wear landau now for a looser top, and their length covers up my large belly. I found that other tops are too short, esp cherokee.

All White Uniform Dress Code?!!
I am so glad to be in a country that doesn't dictate clothing. Hospitals allowing all employees to wear choice of scrubs is a step forward, but they still dictate to specialty units what color to wear. So is med-surg a speciality unit to be assigned the color white? I think slowly hospitals will relent on whites or add other colors.

All White Uniform Dress Code?!!
Do you know why white uniforms were used? White can be bleached, germs killed easier, spots can be cleaned at work while wearing, and also doesn't show dandruff. White is the one color that patient can identify with. Also some nurses wear same uniform without washing. How do you know if a "flower" scrub uniforn is clean? Also if wrinkles show then you are not ironing uniform and you don't look or smell clean. Also staph will colonize faster on uniforms if not bleached or cleaned properly. thanks sib
